Press Release:
TERRY POLLARD, DETROIT-BORN JAZZ PIANIST PASSES
August 15, 1931 December 16, 2009
DETROIT It is with great sadness the Pollard family announces the passing of storied jazz pianist Terry Jean Pollard. The 78-year-old musician died early this morning in The Bronx, New York, after battling a long sickness.
Terry began her professional career in Detroit at the age of 16. She was part of the very fertile Detroit Jazz scene in the late forty's and early fifty's performing on piano with many of the major up and coming players. Terrys first recordings were with Billy Mitchell in 1948. She worked with Johnny Hill from 1948 - 1949, the Emmit Slay Trio from 1950 - 1952 and regularly worked with Billy Mitchell from 1952 - 1953.
It was during this time she was discovered at Bakers Keyboard Lounge by noted vibist Terry Gibbs. He was mesmerized by her skills and asked her to join his North American tour. Terry accepted and became a member of the Terry Gibbs Quartet where she played piano and second vibes. Her greatest visibility was from this period of 1953 - 1957. Terry also made American television history appearing with Terry Gibbs on the famous Tonight Show then hosted by Steve Allen.

This is Terry' s son, Gerry. He was always so proud of this working band that stayed, lived and ate on the road together sometimes up to 48 weeks a year. Both Terry's were friends up till her end.I never met Terry in real life, but called her in the rest home that she lived in,in Brooklyn in the 1990.s, When I told her who I was, she cried and in the hour that we talked, she told me she loved my Pops 20 times and how the greatest 4 years of her life was touring and recording with him in his band..

@@terryjeanpollardmusicfound2768 To Gerry and Dennis... your folks were just so super that words cannot describe their music. I just stumbled upon them and have become an immediate fan. They are both not just musical genius', they are cooooool, man. I love it. Thanks! I'm writing in Israel on June 12th, 2022 and it is good to see that your Dad (Dennis) is still alive. Both these talents are exhaustively awesome.

I was the bass player on this quartet in 1953 (with Frank DiVito on drums). Loved playing with Terry Pollard. Great pal on the road. When we got to Detroit, she took us to the Blue Bird, and introduced us to Paul Chambers, Kenny Burrell, Doug Watkins, Tommy Flanagan, Barry Harris, Thad and Elvin Jones, Ernie Farrow, Wilbert Hogan, Pepper Adams and Billy Mitchell, who were all there at the same time! My name is Michael Weeden. Son of Terry Jean Pollard. There is much I could say, but I feel that in tribute to Black History Month 2022, I will just let your ears hear the truth of the matter of fact on how amazing my mother's articulated expression was impeccable. Resources state that this may have been the first national TV performance of a female African American musician performing. At least, one of the few even now from this era of true Be-Bop.

I was best friends with Terry Pollards son for years and I did not know she played. She was always my friends mother until she played for me and it brought tears to my eyes and I was in college at the time. Then I heard there was a concert in town with all of the top artist in jazz. They were there to play a benefit for Terry who had medical problems. I went and sure enough when I walked up to the stage , she was there with all of the stars like her self and she called out to me. I had only known her as my friends mother --- this blew me away.

I am in awe! I met Mr. Gibbs at LA's Intl Jazz Day event on April 30th at the JazZabration. He told the story of Miss Pollard being in his band, and how they encountered life threatening situations because of the color of her skin. Mr. Gibbs saw her in the spirit of humanity, musicianship and love. Salute to all who uphold these principles. Thank you Mr. Gibbs, what a great jazz giant you are!! Jazzy Rita

It was and she was ! Same for Gibbs ( still playing in his 90s last I knew) and of course the great Steverino, Steve Allen, this is the Tonight show and he started it ! And he took over for Pollard on piano in this and in addition to jazz piano, songwriting, including " Start of Something Big", I think , was another one of his many talents. Brilliant, erudite and very funny guy. His 1967 Summer comedy variety shows are on KZfaq, Louis Nye ( " Sonny Drysdale"), et al, really clever. And nowadays so much of late night tv has turned into laughably infantile " political" commentary by " entertainment " people !?!?

Terry Pollard is certainly one most talented musician. Until I saw this performance, I had never seen or heard of her or any of her performances. I would love to own a CD of her music. God Rest her soul; may her talents be granted to some young aspiring female musician. Thank you for the posting. As a separate note, Terry Gibbs led the band for Regis Philbin when Regis replaced Steve Allen in 1964.

I only discovered Terry Pollard by chance a couple of years ago. I saw Terry Gibbs years ago when I lived in Montreal. Both great musicians. I have their music on all the time when driving. But until tonight I never knew she also played the vibes and how. Sadly, she had disappeared from the scene before I, a fervent jazz fan, got to North America to catch up with my idols.

The first time that I saw this, I was very impressed by Ms.Terry Pollard. Had never heard of her, before. Being a vibist, myself (and related to a well-known jazz vibraphonist - Roy Ayers) I know a little something about the instrument. In fact, I used to own the same Deagan Imperial - model 55A that Terry Gibbs & Ms. Pollard are playing in this video. I thought about it, yesterday. And, I wanted to comeback and find it, again. Would love to own a copy. By the way, Steve Allen (who was the host of the Tonight Show, at the time) who plays piano, also went to school and played in a college band, with the late, great Cal Tjader.

I accidentally came upon this video, one day while searching for some stuff from Terry Gibbs. I cannot say how impressed I was, with the skills of the lady vibraphonist: Terry Pollard. And, they were playing the same Deagan 55 vibraphone that I once owned, for so many years.

Wow! Such tasty playing; this is what I love, when it works. I heard Terry Pollard on Yusef Lateef's "Oboe Blues" on the radio yesterday and liked her solo so much I've started seeking her stuff out and this was next. Tremendous musical intelligence there. Terry Gibbs is no slouch either and I didn't know him well either so this is a good day. : )

Hot tunes, hot playing. What a terrible decade, though, to be talented, female, and black. Most folks who know jazz of the time recognize Terry Gibbs, but how many recognize the equally, if not more, talented Terry Pollard. Says a lot about American culture, that, to this day, Pollard remains out in the musical wilderness.
