A Minor correction: Terry G. was a BBC hireling for "The 1948 Show", where he met Eric Idle, Terry J. and Micheal Palin. When Python was formed, he was an integral part of the six humorists at the insistence of of Eric. He soon became best friends with Jones and Palin, and attended the meetings to help qualify the humor. Eventually, the six men became extremely close - literally as brothers. The co-direction of Holy Grail worked, but it was not without issues. Both men liked the same historical period and could work in it, but some parts were re-shot because the two directors didn't see development in the same manner. It was later agreed to go with a single director on new films, and that would be Terry Gilliam.

That’s interesting, I didn’t know entire story about how they coordinated the directing for the Python films. I’m not sure what I said so long ago, but I knew that Gilliam didn’t start with Python right away. However, I didn’t know that Gilliam worked on The 1948 Show. Gilliam is certainly an icon to me for sure.

Brazil, Baron and 12 Monkeys are my 3 favorites. I haven’t seen Tideland but also have it. Saw Fisher King ages ago, will need to see again now! Love Gilliam.

Excellent! Your 3 favorites are great. I would interested to know what you think of Tideland. Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges made The Fisher King memorable for me.

He really wanted that don film. That was his sendoff most likely and tideland is tough but only one I put higher is zero and imagine higher but definitely can understand your ranking.

Yes, Don was something Terry had to close the chapter on.

I put brothers Grimm last. He was best when he went fantasy hardcore style without restraint.fear and loathing was perfect for him. Cult classic.

I can’t disagree with you, Fear and Loathing grows on me every time I watch it. Brothers Grimm was messy for sure, but I still hate Tideland more.

Honestly I think twelve monkeys is probably to me his best work, definitely more mainstream appeal but still odd enough. I guess the best cohesive film to me , I appreciate python and Brazil for what they are though.

@@excelsiormoviereviews Oh, I get all that. However, gloomy and uncomfortably ambiguous themes are a feature of Gilliam's work. I'd submit that Fear and Loathing was way more disturbing in that sense- particularly the abuse of C. Ricci's character. Some could also interpret the ending of Time Bandits as way more bleak, compared to TL. Here you praised both films much higher than TL. Don't you think that TL does at least end on a somewhat positive note? Perhaps you were more taken aback by the flagrant implications of Jeliza's relationship with Dickens? It could revolt a lot of people. It got me nearly freaked out the first time around. Now however I think Gilliam sincerely wanted to depict the story from a perspective of an innocent child. It still is shocking to adults, given our modern sensitivities (and maybe inability to view the work as separate of current socio-political climate?), but in my opinion it is Terry's last Great film (haven't seen Don Quixote yet).

@@marcinplech7095 yes, Tideland does end on a more hopeful note, but it’s too bad that we didn’t get a lot more of that in the movie. You could say that Time Bandits has a bleak ending, but the journey up until that point is so great that the ending is just shocking. Fear and Loathing is just hilarious to me, I don’t see it as bleak. I need to watch that one again, eventually I’ll trade my dvd in for the Criterion Blu Ray. I really you for watching and providing your feedback. Please provide your ranking for the Gilliam films you’ve seen, I am curious to know your take.

@@excelsiormoviereviews I don't do rankings- sorry. I have opinions on each film but I frequently find them difficult to compare in a straightforward manner. My ranking would simply re-shuffle depending on the day (and I mean it would shuffle a lot!).

Terry Gilliam is better at production design than as an accomplished filmmaker. His films have a very distinct visual style but the stories are very weak and don't stand up to multiple viewings without beginning to see those weaknesses. The Adventures of Baron Munchausen is unspeakably bad and all his unrestrained excesses are on full display. I remember seeing this when it was released and wanted to flee the theatre, especially during the excruciating scene with Robin Williams, but I was with a friend and just endured the tedium. Even Brazil has lost its appeal over the decades. When I rented Tideland I had to turn on the subtitles because I could not understand a single word the litte girl was saying. Overall his films are superficial. After watching Lost in La Mancha it's obvious that he is his own worst enemy and cannot rein in his indulgences, particularly if the budget it very tight. He seems oblivious to these realities, even as his producers try to keep the production afloat. I hate to use the "O" word but Terry Gilliam is ridiculously overrated. I used to look forward to a new film because it was going to something unique but after a while they all started to have a familiarity to them and it wore thin. I only saw The Imaginarium of Dr. Pernasus because Tom Waits was playing the devil, plus Lily Cole was a pleasant piece of eye candy. 😊😊

You have the right to your opinion, but I can watch The Fisher King once a year, even though he didn’t write it. I still like Brazil, Time Bandits, 12 Monkeys and Fear in Loathing has grown on me over the years.
