Tesla auto wipers have never worked very well. Well certainly not in the UK drizzle.
Tesla uses the front facing cameras and software to detect rain on the windscreen, whereas all other manufacturers use a dedicated rain sensor. In the typical Tesla fashion, they stopped fitting rain sensors before the software alternative was ready. So for years, the auto wipers have never worked quite as well as other vehicles. But now in June/July 2024 via an over-the-update, Tesla has finally sorted the auto wipers.

Absolutely NOT fixed. This is just a day of driving where they worked. Super sunny day yesterday in Madrid...dry wipe. Same as usual.

Agree, I think they are WAY better, but we had a few occasions where they randomly wiped dry and didn’t go full speed when we had a downpour. I can’t imagine them ever being as good as our 2014 Astra with a rain sensor.

i just thought the other day that my Model Y wipers were working better...I agree, they appear to have sorted them, or at least made them a lot better.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. It's much better now. I only wipes occasionally when it's dry, but that doesn't really bother me.

Hate to burst your bubble but I haven’t found them to work any better. Mine is up to date and yesterday they started on their own when passing shadows. 😂

Done 5 hours of driving in on/off rain this weekend in my 2022 M3 here in UK and the wipers worked perfectly. However, during the previous week there was the very occasional dry wipe.

No, they are not fixed. Neither are the auto high beams. I have to operate both manually.

The most frustrating thing for me is when the wipers come on when everything is dry, crisp and dusty. The scratches on my windscreen attest to how much of a problem that is. I will say the jury is still out on that one.

Yep. Bright sunny day, blue sky, not a drop of water around, and you're driving about with your wipers on like a lunatic. When they finally fix that, I'll be impressed.

Like you I've found them okay for 99% of rain situations, it's the odd occasion they come on when the screen is dry and they scrape across the screen. Probably due to a dirty windscreen around the camera area. I do like the update that allows you to adjust on the fly with the wheel. I'm already subbed and thumbs up!

I think the main issue is if your on auto pilot you can’t turn off the wipers, in the US anyway

Same, but I think that's ok. After all, you're asking the car to drive itself, so it needs to check it can see as well as possible.

@@wonderboy75 Totally agree, that's the biggest issue. I don't give a stuff if they turn themselves on or off properly in rain, I've handled that job for several decades. What I don't want, is when in dry sunshine, dry wiping grit across the screen. Can't turn that off!

Ok, believe it when I see it! My problem is when you go through heavy rain they are very long time to recognise that and almost when the rain is over they switch to high speed mode to no avail 😉

If you are in the car to do a software update just quickly tap the 2 minute timer and it will start straightaway

That's good news that they have sorted the Y and presumably the 3 out. The auto wipers on my 8 year old Model S started working as well as anything else I've driven around Jan or Feb this year.

You would have thought all the models as the same time, but while the Y probably has had incremental wiper updates, there was a huge difference in the "auto" operation in June/July 2024.

I have never found them an issue, as you say a press of the quick wash and settings came up if you needed it. I must say that recently they have been a lot better and not needed any action on my part. Great example with your glasses!

It remains a strange focus from Tesla that they have not removed the rain sensor AFTER they got it working without a rain sensor

They did the same wit parking sensors. They stopped fitting them to the cars, then took over a year to come up with a working software solution.

I’m only one month into Tesla ownership and so far haven’t had any major issues in light rain, no worse than my previous car. But this weekend I did a 3 hour motorway run in heavy rain at at times they were not coming on and I couldn’t see so had to manually turn the wipers on. Does this bother me? Nope. I get why people are annoyed but for me not a huge issue

Exactly. And pushing a button is a lot easier than pushing or twisting a stalk as in other cars.

......but is it permanent ?. OTA updates are Tesla's way of meddling in what you have got used to. I gave up on my sudden acceleration problem (they couldn't understand, let alone fix......I think I know what the problem was) and went to our BYD Seal Premium.......which is beautifully cluttered, beautifully quiet, longer range etc, for less.

Only on auto pilot and it will still control the wipers automatically in auto pilot, as you would expect, but that now works well too. It will sometimes do a single swipe when you switch on auto pilot, but that is just making sure it can see as best it can.

Anyone saying they are ok is dillusional and never had the extremes some of us face. Try switching to the fastest speed in a heartbeat like every other car! I have been washed over with water from puddles and not seen a thing, just like being in a car wash, the auto did nothing and to switch manually is absolutely ridiculous and we shouldn't even have a video let a lone a discussion about this. How many cars have dedicated videos to the wipers WORKING! Lol.

Yes, I've experienced those wash out moments (before the later software improvements) and one quick push of the button swipes the wipers, so they're no different to any other vehicle in that respect. Ok, you get one swipe, whereas you could push a stalk further to a faster setting on another car, but they're now no worse, just different.

I don't understand your reaction. You just push the button on the stalk once and they come on. In the blink of a eye. Drive my Model 3 year now, just shy of 40k km. Never experienced a 'wiper problem'. I don't know where this is coming from.... Again, push the button once. That's it....

@@thedreamfactory6964you can also use voice control but it is still rubbish. I have been driving model 3 for over 4 years and just changed to Highland version with no stalks. Wiper switch is now next to the autopilot control. Very easy to touch accidentally to get a dry wipe. My 2011 Honda was better. They remind me of my 1957 Holden with vacuum operated wipers. The more you accelerated the slower the wipers moved.😂

The main problem with the wipers was...if it is NOT raining...they work....and this isn't solve till now. The rest is the lowest acceptable level where automatic wipers should be, sorry but I don't wnat to press any button if I have automatic wipes. I have a M3 since Dez 23 and the Peugeot before never had such Problems. So it is better now but it stay as a construction

😂😂😂 Sometimes they work fine, most of the time not. This is just clickbait. By now it should be clear, this can not be solved with software for the current cameras.
