The Tesla Cybertruck is a feat of engineering... there is no denying that. But is it actually a good Off-Road or Overland vehicle? I'n this video I will share 5 reasons I think it isn't ready to be a real Offroad vehicle... yet. It take more then an impressive power plant and 4X4 to make a vehicle you can trust when you are really out there.

I don't get why people think this is good engineering? They couldn't fit a descent size battery in it and offers a "range extender" that will eat up the cargospace? They couldn't even fit a place for a sparetire. Both extender and sparetire goes in the flatbed. You can't even have both because only one of them fits. To me it seems like Tesla has done absolutely nothing to improve the prototype from 2019. Top notch engineering?

A lot of reviewers assume EV buyers are completely against fossil fuels, I have an 8kw portable generator (yes, I can lift it in and out of the bed myself) and would take this with me along with a few jerry cans and solar panels for camp power. A bit less efficient to recharge with a generator? Sure, but it's an option, and you then have two fuel options for your vehicle! More of the freedom you're looking for. As far as overlander size and weight; have you seen some of the diesel overlanding rigs out there?

Great points. Also, when Russia was trying hard to destroy our grid, I’ve done some math here about fuel economy: EV ⚡️ by generator MPG. I have a Model Y and I can go 15% *more* on 1L of gas than on a comparable size ICE vehicle. Regen + aero compensate for charging inefficiencies. Also, a generator’s engine works at optimal RPM all the time, hence better efficiency. Hello from 🇺🇦!

Yeah, I have a Y and love it. I so want/wanted to get one of these, but the range just doesn't work for me; off roading and camping in the West requires more range than they have delivered (giving up 1/3 of the bed space for the range extender is not an option). One of my favorite places to play is the Sawthooths in Idaho. The closet Supercharger is in Boise and it would take, at minimum, half the battery capacity to get where I'm going. Unless they vastly expand the network in these areas, I'll have to pass when my reservation comes up 😞

A very good video. I have a good buddy of mine who installes electric chargers and somehow dislikes cyber trucks. He is an off roader. Now I understand his points. Thanks. You are very right. Yes, it will take a long time to get EVs offroading. Currently, I think it makes sense to make an incredible truck that will fit 95% of consumers. Then, we'll see if that last 5% happens. This might be that last remaining ICE users to switch. People still ride horses for the sake of riding horses. On your point of control: I noticed that an all wheel model 3 has the same or better control in 10" of snow that my old TJ jeep. I can only imagine the control the Cybertruck will have... especially, with more clearance, and better tires. I imagine that the cyber truck in the future could have an over the air update for off roading, that gears way down, and offers more control. But yes, repairs. I think it comes down to that for off roading. They'll have to figure that out before anyone should take this truck wherever you would want to take it.

It doesnt seem designed for anything to fit the otherwise pickup truck box framework, but you can bet the stuff that does will cost magnitudes more than the case for multiplatform designs. At least it wont rust, if the rest of it is also stainless, but that probably isnt the case. The batteries could sure use a easy access panel like the tv remote has, and early cellphones.

I would think a cybertruck would be ideal for replacing our 4Runner for observing and photographing wild horses, in rugged country with 4wd trails. Modern ICEs are very silent. With a modern efficient offroad ICE (Diesel) you easily get 600 miles of range. My Diesel car for example, has a range of 750 miles (56mpg). How far do you think you can go with in EV in the wild? Especially if you use electric energy of your EV battery, for other stuff too (lights, cooking etc.). EVs are good for commuting and not for much else.

@@vasiliyt8600 we typically don’t need more than a half tank in the 4 runner in a given stretch, a full tank in the 4Runner gives about 340 miles of range so pretty much the same as the Tesla. @@swordedaffair Fuel consumption is pretty constant. Range doesn't change. You can also take fuel canisters, for extra range (or for e-generator). Basically all offroad cars & trucks outside of north america have Diesel engines. EVs will always be city vehicles. Useful only for commuting. For everything else, there are too fragile and too expensive to repair (when it's possible). We will always be "10 years" away of the magic new battery technology, that will fix all the current EV problems. "EV trucks" like Cybertruck, Hummer EV etc. are expensive toys for people who want to show of their wealth (or debt). Bt the way, to get extra range on your Cybertruck, you have to pay an extra *16,000$* (for just +130 miles) and ~600 extra pounds. You can get around the same extra range with a single fuel canister. ;)

Good points. So, there is off road driving and there is OFF ROAD DRIVING! Do you think there's room to call this truck a light off-road utility vehicle? I think that's a more appropriate description. On the farm, I want my pickup truck to be able to pull a wagon full of feed across a field, pull a fallen tree of the laneway, take it around the perimeter to inspect/repair a fenceline or maybe pull out a stuck tractor. I can see the 240V in the rear being real handy for taking the welder to a piece broken equipment rather than the other way around. Power outages are a reality out here in the country. It's nice to know I have back up power if my generator konks out. Or at the annual bush party we could have a bit of power for lights, music or a small refrigerator without the wail of a generator. I think this truck is more than capable for that. The extreme crawling that you describe will probably always need specialized modifications. A few aftermarket bull bars etc, would be nice though. What most folks are missing is that an ICE truck that travels 4 hours while offroading 50-100 miles would have guzzled all its gas (bcos you're always in the lowest gear and engine's always revving), but an EV is way more efficient in using it's energy. with a 300-400 mile range on EV, you'll be able to easily go in and out of most expeditions. Also, most rural areas have 220v outlet to help you trickle charge over night.

Many good points but I think you're too much assuming that all offroad is the same. For the type of offroading I used to do some 30 odd years ago I think this would have been great. Not all offroad is in remote places. Offroading is not just about going on long trips for a week or more, there are events, competitions, local trails and so on. The 48V system should not be too much of a problem as you can easily get a 48V to 12V converter and power most accessories with it, though not something like an electric winch probably. With regards to the steering I'm guessing it shouldn't be a problem either and even if it is initially they will probably fix it within a few months if people complain. The drive by wire with rear steering has great potential if in offroad mode they enable (through software) independent manual control of the front and rear steering. When it comes to customizing it will probably be several years before that becomes practical, partly due to software not allowing you to do various things and partly just because it will take time for the aftermarket manufacturers to catch up not just with the new way of doing things, such as the 48V system which is actually much better than 12V for powering a winch. I think for some people, maybe not most, it will be fine offroad and perhaps even better than any other stock offroad vehicle in some respects.

I'm sure the tether thing will be an issue for the longest time (although there are EVs with over 600 miles range already) and repairs will be more technical/premium but I'm sure they will get heavily modified as soon as they are in people's hands. I want to wait and see the reality of drive by wire, my guess is you quickly get used to it (it changes the multiplier based on speed). The NHTSA regulations causing problems for autopilot users are well known. You can stop for a moment to reset it but it looks like Tesla have been forced to make it stricter recently. LFP batteries are shorter range but can be extinguished much more easily -longer range LFP are in the pipeline. Tesla are much less likely to catch fire Vs gas or diesel (7x and 11x less). I want to see it so the Rubicon like the Rivian did. I know it's a shorter distance but it's sufficient for most people. Maybe the overland version will come in a few years as technology catches up

Thanks for your video, but I’m failing to see what actually makes it a bad overlander based on the points you made. I have a Rivian, which has much less fast charger locations available and even less accessory options. I’ve made it into my dream overlander and haven’t had an issue in the ~4,000 miles of overlanding I’ve done in it. If you’re arguing that it’s too expensive to beat up, that’s a valid point and should be weighed by the budget of the owner…just like any rig out there. The whole charging thing isn’t a problem because you can literally plug it into any wall outlet in a pinch or dip into town for a charge, kind of like how you would get gas. Yes that’s assuming there is a charger nearby, but I never had a problem finding a charger with a little forethought. My understanding of the steer by wire on the CT is that it doesn’t “decide” how to interpret your steering input, but it changes the steering profile based on speed. So a 1/4 turn at 5mph while turning in a flat parking lot will give the same effect of a 1/4 turn at 5mph on a rock face. It’s not analyzing the terrain and deciding how much it needs to turn; thats still the driver. Also, tell your wife to disengage autopilot next time she wants to accelerate past 85 miles per hour. It limits it to that speed because it’s unsafe to go faster than that with auto steer on. You know, for safety and stuff.

This is a good analysis and I appreciate that it isn't just cynicism for the sake of cynicism like so many other videos. I can't really dispute any of these points but I will say that any conclusions should be modulated to account for the fact that this is a brand new product that will see extensive field testing and upgrades as it fully rolls out. The software lock issue you address is somewhat misleading as many these features are largely optional and can be toggled on and off. It's already possible to charge EVs with generators and oversize EVs will prompt demand for specialization. The repair issue is definitely valid and I'm interested to see a cybertruck put to a real test here.

The solution might be a solar tent/bivuac made by solar membrane with a surface of 20-30 square yards with a power of 3-5 kw witch can charge your off roader în 2 sunny days while you acomodate în the wild , make the fire, finding water and visiting by feet your neiborghoods. Well its not perfect but it îs quite posible. Take a day or two margin from your job return becouse the weather might skip your charging time.

Real world cybertruck range is being reported as significantly less than advertised. Also, it's HEAVY. This truck exceeds the tow capacity of my taco ... meaning, when it get's stuck or goes down few off road vehicles are going to be able to safely assist it.

8:00 yes, she was grounded when she exceeded 90 mph in AutoPilot *but* at the next exit you can pull over and put it in (P)ark and (D)rive and then it would be allowed again. Indeed there should be a few seconds of grace in there except exceeding the ability of the camera images and processing to safely be analyzed and processed left a window of vulnerability ... which Tesla may not actually be in control of due to rules and regs. Food for thought.

You can run out of gas also! Now, with an electric vehicle, you can use solar panels to get some power. You can ‘t dig an oil well and carry a refinery.

it looks like all your issues are solved with time or more specific preparations. the advantage of steer by wire is that you'll probably be able to control the wheel a lot better than with a shaft with potential updates! one can argue that you're an expert at shaft steering and a novice at SBW so the outcome could be link to relative skills. some people are probably already building infrastructures for portable charging spots because the CT had such a big demand! the CT will probably bring more off road "tourists" as well, CT owner that want to try out what the CT is capable of... they'll benefits and disadvantages but it's probable reality which will drive up the demand for aftermarket equipment.

It'll be awesome off-road - just not on ridiculously long (and completely unnecessary) overlanding excursions. And loud, polluting overland rigs are rather off-putting to the majority of the population. The Rivian R1T and CyberTruck are attracting a new kind of more conscious off-roader. That I think in and of itself is an improvement to the status quo. You forget that going slow greatly increases range and you typically can't go very fast off-road unless it's Baja style and the CyberTruck was developed specifically to be good at that as well. Hanging out 200 miles off the beaten path with a foldout solar array and a bunch of creature comforts not powered by a loud, stinky generator sounds awesome.

These vehicles are too heavy for off-roading other than maintained, dirt roads. Also, these vehicles aren't carbon neutral and the environmental impact is worse than we're led to believe. Tesla drivers do a great job of patting themselves on the back but please know that kids are mining the battery materials in the Congo. Child labor and Tesla are a thing, so much that Tesla voted against sharing the results of internal reporting on the usage of child labor. We'd rather not know because knowing may interrupt the self-reward path we've created with this stupid brand.

Electric vehicles are intriguing. I really would like a Rivian RT1; however, they are expensive. I would take a little bit off road; however, not too much for many, if not all, of the reasons you said. I do think the Tesla Cybertruck has a face only a mother could love.

Tesla can very easily push out an over the air software update to make the turning ratio behave exactly as you are expecting. They take feedback very well. That's the benefit of having a computer on wheels. Fine control over many aspects of driving are but a software update away.

Good god you really love Teslas… this is an Off-road channel… I think you are having a hard time understanding context… the review is in the context of a channel exclusively dedicated to off-roading. Off-roaders don’t want to drive by software… clearly you are not an off-roader and know nothing of rock crawling and driving challenging trails, weight issues, wheelbase issues, range issues, I could go in and in… but I’m not going to waste my time… if you ever want to do an off-road competition I’ll meet you in Moab or Baja you bring your Tesla and I’ll bring an Old, Dumb vehicle and we will see how your software compares… ready when you are.

@@OutdoorAuto I definitely know nothing about off roading. I am not a truck guy. I am a tech guy - software engineer for decades and now a tech product manager. I don't claim to know anything about offroading. That is your domain, hands down, no argument. I enjoyed your video and learned a lot. So thank you for that. That said, my comment was purely about something I do understand in my bones, software systems. Software has the ability to dynamically change and adapt to hardware. As a product manager I listen to my users and task my software engineers to listen to customers and provide solutions to feedback. It's a continuous iterative improvement process. The advantage of drive by wire is that the turning ratio can be changed programmatically. You said you didn't like that when you turned the wheel a piece of software overrides your inputs with its own decisions. All I was saying is because it is software, a new mode could be added by Tesla to allow you to disable those decisions and have the steering behave *exactly* as you expect it to react. And yes, for the record, I freaking love my Tesla Model Y and have a Cybertruck on order. That's what drove me to your channel. If you are gonna put out a video about the CT you darn well should expect to have attracted people like me! Lol. You seemed cool in your video and I appreciated hearing your point of view. Hope you are able to accept some alternate points of view from non-off road people who are intrigued by the idea of offroading that also happen to love Teslas. :-)

Range is a subjective issue, the vast majority of people offroading arnt offroading more than a day, the mountain trails are a 20 mile drive from where i live, if range is that much of a concern you can take a 240v generator and a few gallons of gas in the bed.

You can install a secondary tank or carry a portable 200 liter fuel tank (similar size to 50kWh range extender) and get 3000km of range. Even with 300 kWh ($30-40k) of batteries you will only get 1000km (being optimistic).

I was expecting actual data or the fact that does not include a spare tire. Instead, you told me why it does not work for you or for extreme offroad. It was a nice perspective, and I understand that the title is designed to entice by any means necessary. For me going offroad is not that extreme, but at the saying goes different strokes. The lack of offroad tests makes me believe that the Crbertruck will be less viable than the Rivian or a total animal (if they are reserving the test for volume production)
