The 8% battery figure is probably about as accurate as 175 PSI tire pressure.

The median between low and average is another good figure at around 14% degradation / losses.

Did the test on my 115k mi 2021 Model Y LR, got 82% life. Better then I expected tbh this vehicle was driven very hard its whole life and been supercharged a majority of it.

This is disastrous. Almost 20% after only 1-2 years. Like a cheap smartphone battery. If the range is like 290 miles on a charge (since you said driven hard), 115k miles are about 400 charging cycles. 82% health left after that, plus it's only 2 years, is really bad. So, Tesla batteries don't seem to last long after all!

@@super_tomtendo yes, it is. But especially due to the low timeframe the battery shouldn't have aged as much. Batteries degrade from 2 things: charging/discharging and solely time by itself. If he drove 115k miles in 6 years it would be even less capacity now.

80+% capacity is a common threshold that a battery is still healthy. If Teslafi is showing 12% degradation, and the battery health is showing 8%, maybe the health test shows how much degradation is left until it thinks the battery will reach that 80% mark.

Actually if you read up on lithium ion batteries, most manufacturers recommend replacing the pack at 80% health.

Pretty neat stuff in Service Mode. I wanted to do this, but don’t have home charging. I asked SC Tech to perform this, but so far I’ve heard only crickets. Car’s exclusively SC charged. Almost everyday to 90%. Yesterday I pulled a Kyle and pushed it to 5% remaining… Lol. The very first time car’s been in single digits. Though my 90% number is @254.. Curious to see how battery health is holding up. Owned it for 2+ yrs.. pushing about 45k… Love the channel! Dig the new logo !!🍻

I really want to see how is your tesla battery doing with your type of charging style. I am charging my MYP at home, but doing it low 25-35% to 85-90% top charging routine.

@@nurseitkalbaev Likewise. I’d like to see this as well. Will see if I can do a battery health test either have Tesla Tech do this or see if I can plug it in at a level 2. It’ll probably be in January when I don’t have to drive as much for work. I’ll keep the inquiring minds posted. It’s like, I kinda want to know, but then again, I don’t want to know. Lol.

Tried this and had two alerts, back window auto wasn't working and the back defrost wasn't working. Fixed it! Would be nice if Tesla reached out to you about these so we can fix them. Thanks for the tip!

I think you should replace the coolant valve actuator to clear that fault and then repeat the test. Start at about 25%, not single digits. You might have to disable TeslaFi first.

Hi, just one thought, a poor battery might perform ok while slow discharge but really suffer on high discharge due to increased internal resistance. It’s not so easy to measure degradation. It’s always a algorithm and it’s not perfect

Good stats. My full charge is hanging out around 275 rated miles. 170,000 miles of similar use case to you, with lots of supercharging on road trips. I haven’t don’t the service mode health test yet.

Great video! I didn’t know about this service mode at all. I’m going to try a battery test soon and I’ll post my results. My 2020 M3P is currently at rough lymph 62K miles. Again thanks for posting this awesome video 💯

Real measurement of charge capacity is done at a fixed rate, i.e. 1/20 of label capacity in ICE batteries. I'd expect the Tesla service test also relies on consistant standardized dis/charge rates.

Final result show my 2018 with almost 68k miles at 84%. The last 4% of the drain process was weired. It looked like stuck at 4% with nothing going on to drain the battery. I had to stop and restart the test after a full day of waiting. I don't know if it went to 0%. When I noticed it started to charge, my screen showed 5%. Also worth noting is after the test, my car was reset to factory default, which I lost all our driver profiles, favorite, etc.

Hello, I have the same alert VCFront_a210 regarding coolant on my model 3. During the SC visit, I was told that the super bottle needs to be replaced. I was quoted around $940 for the repair....

I did this test and it showed my battery was at 85%, which just about everything other test or numbers agree with!

Ran a battery health test on my 2018 Model3. My result was 12% health. My car has 51k miles, 98% home charging (up to 80-90% SoC). After reading some of these comments, I'll likely run another test after I get a software update and the weather gets warmer.

The 5 way valve has failed on the superbottle and will need replaced. Tesla replaced mine for the same error, fortunatley under warranty. They replace the superbottle and attached pumps, valve, etc. for this, requires coolant put back into system and also recharging refrigerant system too since it is all tied together. Was done in a day. Good luck!

@@David_L3 could be. Bad thing about this fault is it doesn't tell you how long it's been going on, so the valve could have failed a long time ago. Don't like the fact this impacts your battery and motor health too regarding thermal management. Pretty major issue to me.

I tried it with mine, did everything that you did a week before you posted your video. I had the fans going all kinds of noise and something went wrong because I came back and it still said 100% Health after almost 2 years of ownership

@@mitchbynum if I'm not on a road trip, I'm usually down to about 40% and then just to trickle charge on 110 volt, back up to about 80% and that stays pretty typical

So my results was 86% battery health on a Tesla Model 3 long range rwd 2018 with 56k miles. The weird thing is that a few months ago i was trying to calibrate the battery and one of those days i charged the car up to 100% and i was getting about 307 compared with the 303 that i am “getting” today at 100% which still not bad. But I don’t think i have 14% battery degradation.

I can’t find the post on what steps you exactly need to do prior to running the test? I tried it a few times but it never completes. Either 90% limit stops it or scheduled charging etc stops it and I have disabled both so it could complete but never does. Any specific tips prior to entering service mode to run this test successfully while my battery is almost 10% please????

Would appreciate if you could work for better views of the interior screen and your laptop instead of just holding up a phone. A mounted go pro does wonders on other channels, and screen recording on laptops is simple enough. Appreciate the content!

Thanks for showing this test. It appears your car has 65.6 kWhs for the nominal full pack reading. New is 77.8, making for 16% battery degradation. The range loss as you showed is 12%. I see the same variance between range loss and degradation loss in my 2019 LR RWD over the years. Capacity and Range Loss have always been different readings, with the capacity loss being greater. My capacity loss is 6.8% but my range loss so far is 4.6%. I have far fewer miles than yours, however. 😉I'm taking my readings from ScanMyTesla. The Energy Buffer reading also declines over time. I believe this reserve is the past 0% capacity. Energy Buffer this vintage of 3's starts at 3.5 kWhs. Mine has dropped to 3.27 kWhs. While I only have 24k miles, 37% of those miles have been from Supercharging. I pretty much follow your same battery charging strategy.

The new battery 77 kWh is also misleading because even when it was new you would never get that much out of it, only about 72 kWh when new. So it is about 8-10% degredation.

@@ryen7512 I watched your 70k battery report. Have to like ScanMyTesla. Just nitpicking, but I come up with just two more kWs at 74.3 usabe when new (77.8 minus the 3.5 kWh battery buffer). The first reading I took from ScanMyTesla was around 6,600 miles. It showed a Nominal Full Pack of 77.6 then. I did see one video of a new Model 3 that showed 77.9 when new, but SMT goes with 77.8. In a ScanMyTesla from a few months ago my Nominal Full Pack was showing 72.8 kWhs. SMT showed the "Usable" as 34.7 at 49.9% SOC, making the usable 69.5 kWhs at 100% SOC. Add in the 3.3 kWs of Energy Buffer and that brings it to 72.8, the Nominal Full Pack reading.

Not every model 3 long range had 77kw battery pack most of them came with 75kw pack until recently they put 77kw and 82kw packs with the enhancement of the battery packs. I think that was in 2020 they changed.

@@acostaae90 All LR Model 3's had 77 kWh packs until they bumped up the range as you mentioned to 82 kWh. I've never seen a 75 kWh LR pack documented. Once you subtract the 3.5 kWh of buffer you are around 75 kWhs of "usable" energy. Perhaps that is the confusion some make? Can provide proof there were 75 kWh packs?

Are you sure the test completed? As I understood the test is was supposed to charge to 100%, but you are only showing 98.8%. Do you contend it charged to 100% then phantom drained 1.2% while plugged in? I think you have to do the test again. I also suspect you don't need to set your charge limit to 100% (i.e. the test overrides the user set charge limit) - would be curious to see a confirmation of that.

Great video. I saw you did a lot of modifications. Specifically the lift. If you need to take your vehicle in for repairs what do they say. The aftermarket stuff probly voids warranties. Will they still work on it? If you have to pay for the repairs how much do they usually charge? Is it calculated by a hourly rate,plus parts like regular dealerships?

It doesn't automatically void warranties, to a point. The whole car warranty? No. If you put aftermarket suspension on and something suspension related fails, maybe. But if a drivetrain part fails and they blame it on the suspension, they have no case. Been modifying cars for years, and it really comes down to the dealer working on it. My last car was modified significantly and they had no problem with it. Granted I did most of the maintenance and only took it there for major items.

We love traveling in our 2021 MYP. We have 38k miles and our car shows 267 miles when fully charged. Hasn't really impacted us based on the way the SC are spaced but I'm curious if we've really had that much degradation in 2 years. I'm not brave enough to play with the service mode though. Love your videos. I aspire to be like Kyle or dad Dave. :-)

@@Maceyee1 you used to only be able to use service mode while physically at a service center - it would only work within a map bubble around the service center locations unless manually trigger with toolbox (mobile techs)

Why do you only charge to 50%? Most people say 80% SOC, is optimal for storage voltage and longevity of the pack.

I would say if it’s very rarely the car ever sees one her percent state of charge, and it’s been months since you’ve charged it to that, then I would suspect the 8% you’re getting from the battery test in the car is more accurate than what you’re getting from the other data.

Could it be that the cycle stops when the temp reaches freezing because it could endanger life to kill the battery

About the test: Has to be arround 20% to start. First time i had it on 7% and it made alot of noise. Drained battery fast, But never charged back up. After 24h it was sitting there with 3% battery and it could not charge. Had to jnplug and powercycle the car then chsrging worked again. Tryed with 20% again as ppl said and it did nothing at all. So my guess is the test isnt working as it should 😅

I think that mileage does not that much effect the battery health as the time. My M3 long range is 2018, but mileage is very low, now it is about 5500 miles only. Never supercharged (actually just tried once for a 5 min), charged to 100% only a few times before the trips. I did not do the test, but my range now shows ~285-288 miles if charged to 100% instead of 310, which means loss of range about 8%. So, it basically the same as for cars with more than 50K miles.

Do you always charge to the same level? And do consistent trips like drive to work, get home, charge back to 80% every day? If your car almost always sits at the same levels of charge (80% and whatever you arrive at work) then the BMS only has a couple data points and can't accurately gauge capacity. If so, try charging to different levels (70, 85, etc) and/or skip a day of charging if you can and see if over a few weeks the range climbs.

@@ekbuz No, I don't charge always to the same level. It looks like that range now is like 285-287 miles stays the same about a year. Generally the battery degradation is fastest in first years and then slows down, so I hope that my car will not be an exclusion.

I just did this test and I have 13% health 🤷🏻‍♂️ I track my car too so maybe it’s a side effect of pushing it hard!

18:35 that doesnt include the hidden rated range.... if you have added 64kwh into the pack that suggests you have 64/78.8 = 18.8% degradation which fits really well with teslafi and your rated range of 270 miles - teslafi does not account for that. my car has i think 65kwh estimated capacity according to SMT and has roughly the same range as you.

Wonder what the uncertainty of the measurement is? Typical current sensor say 300A +/-1%/2% accuracy, +/-1% linearity about +/- 4.2 amps @ 300 amps, charging at 40 amps could be +/- 10% error. This does not take into account temperature sensitivity. The voltage measurement will be better say +/- 0.2% Since power is volts times amps the power measurement at 40 amps charging could be +/- 10% uncertainty. Good thing is this uncertainty should be fairly consistent over the life of the cars measurement system.

Should I not leave my 22 MY plugged in and charge to 90% daily? That's what the screen suggests for daily but he was talking about staying around 50%. My wife only takes the kid to school in it and back home which is around 22 miles a day then she plugs it back in. Am I charging to high each day?

Elon once posted that "even 90% should be fine" - if you don't need the full 90% all the time, charge to lower SoC. 50% is definitely "super-cautious", or in other words: useless. For what your usage seems to be, set it to 70% and all should be fine. I did the 90% thing for the first 40k km (now have 80k km on it) and my degradation was (and is) totally within the fleet level, even a little lower than the fleet average (means: better milage).

For all batteries, they are much longer lasting to keep them in a mid charge. You can see the scientific research but optimal would likely be between 20 and 60 percent charge. Doing this exponentially increases the number of charges the battery can do before failure. I would need to read again but doing 20 to 60% all the time would mean many thousands of charges before failure so battery would last 30+ years however even 5-90 every day battery will still cycle maybe 2000 times so likely 15 years plus. Supercharging is hard on batteries but the Pre heat helps a lot. In all just have it in mind not to hammer super charging, avoid less than 10 percent and avoid more than 80 percent of you can and the battery will last a lot longer. For your normal use keep between 30 and 50 percent shoukd be more than possible and mean the battery last longer than you 😂

No you can't start the test if you're over 50%. I started it at 7% state of charge.

these tests need to occur when the battery tem is 25c. it might take a full 24 hours for the battery to go from freezing in your driveway to 25c in your heated garage (given the garage was even that warm).

I have a question for you guys in the comment, so my 2019 M3 has about 95k miles, my full charge rated miles says about 272, but when driven about 73 Mph highway after my day is done I end up at 15% SOC or so and that’s after driving 153.7 miles! I know other things consume the energy, but according to the energy app, when I add all the mile consumed it only adds up to about 190+ miles all together…. So to go from 272 miles to less then 200 it’s quite significant, any of you have notice similar things?

Tesla efficiency is poor on the freeway and even worse if the climate isn't just perfect. Add passengers or cargo and the range drops further.

272 miles is if you keep driving at constant speed of 55 mph. 73mph would definitely killed 100+ miles because of the driving speed. Try to stay below 70mph you will definitely get more than 200 miles real world range.

i just checked mine & showed low coolant. I checked my coolant & it’s a little bit below minimum. I scheduled a service in the app scheduled this coming monday & Tesla sent me a repair estimate of $740 without checking the car yet. The estimate showed part “ASY FRONT CONTROLLER COIL SUSP” to be replaced. what connection does a module do to a low coolant? 😮 Should they be checking for a leak first than replacing a controller?

@DODIE, $740 us for front control Link and I got mine done free at 24 months of ownership of Y. They also replaced the 2 lateral links. Poor quality control

@@echoplexhandlesaredumb just had it serviced and they found no leaks so they just topped off coolant. I paid $20.5 for coolant top off and $120.5 for diagnosis/labor.

@@welbyroberto6581 I did checked the level myself to confirm i’m low on coolant before scheduling service. I had to remove the front tub/frunk to see the coolant reservoir and mine was a little bit below minimum. I thought being over 4 yr old car, it might lose a bit of coolant but it’s supposed to be a closed loop system. I could have topped it off myself but I want the peace of mind not having a leak somewhere.

Non-consumer facing, service only apps are generally a lot less polished, and more tolerant to idiosyncrasies in the UI.

Perhaps the third party app didn’t let the car go to sleep like it needed to? I saw 3 sleep attempts during the testing charge… Could be why you got the weird result.

Just a thought... why don't you bring the car to the Tesla service center and let them run the test? If they get 8% too, you get a replacement battery right away. :D
