Today we're facing off two of the most compelling EV options out there...the BMW i4 and the Tesla Model 3.
The Tesla beat the BMW to market by a few years, but it has gone through many iterations over that time! So have BMW brought enough to the table to claim a better car? We look at Platforms, Range, Effciency, Space and Design...hopefully you learn enough to help you decide which is the best buy!
We also go into some detail on the difference between the eDrive40, the M50, the Performance, Long Range and what used to be called the Standard Range +
We release at least two videos every week, so don't forget to subscribe so that you never miss a show!
And join us on Facebook to let us know what you think about which of these cars is the better buy! We have started a Group called Best Electric Vehicle.

Great video! I was considering both cars and at the beginning all specs (and yt videos) told me to go with the model 3. So the i4 started as the underdog in my comparison (platform shared with ICE, Tesla being futuristic high-tec, the large kidney discussion, no frunk), but after driving both cars for some days, all of this became less and less important. I was so convinced that I’ll end up ordering the awesome model 3, but at the end the i4 turned out to be my perfect match. To testdrive cars is key for decision making.

I was in the same situation, undecided btw the two models. We did a lot of test drive and finally decided in the I4 M50, so we put down the deposit 3 months ago and can't wait to get ours. I love the ride on the I4 and most importantly the familiarity of the BMW since we currently own an X5. This I4 is just like another BMW from all other aspects.

I had seriously considered the I4, comparing the BMW to Tesla simply isn't an apples-to-apples comparison. From a pricing perspective in the States, anyway, BMW tries to compete on the money perspective by starting with a low output rear wheel drive to a dual motor Model 3. What comes standard with Tesla are options, as is usually the case with BMW, options. Putting all of that aside, BMWs alignment with Electrify America, made the decision quite easy. Sorry BMW.

I'm totally biased towards the BMW but I must say Teslas efficiency is just incredible and I wouldn't say no to their charging network, but I ended up choosing the Beemer over Tesla 3 and Polestar2 which also is a very nice car and fun car to drive. None of the cars is bad just choose the one you like, and remember they all play a part in making the next car better due to the competition. So enjoy your car and dont enable any autopilot stuff, drive it yourself and enjoy life.

Thanks for the review. I do wish you had included a driving test. As a current i4 edrive40 owner and former Model 3 Long range owner I have noticed substantial differences in ride quality. The Model 3 has a harsh suspension and you can hear road and wind noise at high speeds. the I4 has that smooth quality suspension and a very quiet cabin. I will say the sound system in the Model 3 is superior to either sound system available in the i4.

The Tesla on paper is a better car by numbers but it didn’t stop me for putting in an order last September. I take delivery of my brand new high spec BMW i4 eDrive 40 next month. In the end it comes down to one’s personal choice just like TVs. Is Samsung better than Sony?. I test drove a Tesla, great car but I absolutely hated the minimalist interior and that matters if one is paying £50,000 for a premium car.

I have placed an order for the M50. Although I can still cancel there are some aspects that the video does not cover, which after testing both might end up being the reasons for keeping the BMW. M50 has more equipment that you cant get in the m3p, such as heads up display with augmented reality (it warns me when speeding. These cars are so fast i actually appreciated that). The M50 is much quieter and comfortable and has adaptive dampers so you can choose between Comfort and fun. It has automatic retractable towbar while the performance does not have one. It has cooled seats and separate climate zone in the back. Sun roof that can be opened which i like. You can install aftermarket kick sensor for the lift gate on the Tesla but the BMW comes with that and the hatch back is much more practical to get to your luggage. Also Even if the BMW does not have a frunk the boot is 475 litres which i believe is AS much as the frunk and trunk combined in the Tesla . I really liked the m3p however i got a stretch after only driving for a few hours , the BMW has more support / adjustments in its seats. Yes also those lights 😍 laserlights for the win! In the Tesla i was allways afraid of blinding oncoming traffic, not in the bmw

Supercharger network only becomes relevant if you are traveling long distances. If one is traveling less than 100 miles to work round trip like me then it becomes irrelevant when choosing an electric car. This is why BMW i4, Porsche Taycan, Audi etron GT and Mercedes EQE owners don’t by Tesla Model 3s. They want class, quality and comfort rather than a computer on 4 wheels even though the Tesla is a good car.

Thank you for being one of the first reviewers to talk about the fact the the Germans have conservative 0-60 times, and the M3P uses a rollout in their runs. So there is nowhere close to the Tesla being .70 secs quicker 0-60. In fact, as stated in this review, they are closer than you think 0-60, with the BMW pulling noticeably harder 60-130mph.

Both quartermile speeds are 11.8 with the BMW having a greater exit speed meaning Tesla beats it at the traffic light all day any day. Only over speeds of 160KM/h you will overtake the Tesla M3P depending on your SOC.
@hotrod182
@hotrod182 2 жыл бұрын
@@Maarten_vd Not really.. Brook the owner of Dragtimes and a Model 3, got 11.7 decelerating through the quartermile. 3.1 0-60 w/roll out. He even said the i4 M50 is the new king of Mid Size EV Sedans. The Tesla is kind of like comparing a Dodge Demon vs a Subaru STI. The Subaru may get the jump, and the Demon may have a hard time catching it, but you know the Demon has so much more power. Point is, yes you will have a chance at a stop light, but from a 60-100 mph roll, which is common for me (getting on the on-ramp, etc), I will walk the Tesla. Look at the Car Wow video, 30mph roll, the Tesla gets the jump. 50mph roll hardly any advantage. And from a 60mph, the BMW will immediately walk away. Yes, the BMW doesn't release full power till around 37mph, but unlike the Tesla, it keeps full power output all the way to 140mph. @Maarten_vd 2 жыл бұрын
@@hotrod182 Not really..? You are right. The Model 3P does a quartermile in 11.65 seconds, draggy speed on a normal street exit speed 114Miles/hour. So yes, the BMW will overtake somewehere around the 12'th second but these are speeds that are very illegal anywhere. The model 3P is lighter, had lower drag and is more efficient, steers better, brakes better.) Regarding the rolling start (carwow) at 60mph, yes it will walk the Tesla when it was able to recharge the powerboost and the car was set into the most sportiest setting. One think i want to add to that, I own a (2019) M3P and even with 5% battery on a cold day (5 degrees), its still able to sprint to 60 in mid 4 seconds, but at speeds above 60, all performance is gone, i mean like a Skoda with 120hp. So it depends on the SOC quite a bit. Don't know how BMW handles but could be similar.
@hotrod182
@hotrod182 2 жыл бұрын
@@Maarten_vd Dragtimes 11.7 was slowing down through the quarter mile. The 120mph+ traps of the i4 is the telling number though. Can't wait till I get my M50 so I can run it on my Vbox and Dragy simulataneously. Car Wow test of the i4 was only around 60% SOC or so. Couldn't tell what the Tesla was at. They had numerous tests, the M3P definitely loses HP at 60% SOC, there are dyno charts floating around.

For me its a no-brainer model 3 is the better car. I traded in my m3 for a model 3 performance and test drive an i4. Not going back to the BMW. Tesla's quality isn't quite on the level, but other than quality its better than the BMW in just about every way as a daily. The tech to me is leagues ahead especially with OTA updates and tuning simply through an update. The infotainment is far more refined and friendlier and to me the model 3 is more upbeat and fun than the BMW. It feels more planted and the acceleration is more gut-punch-ey. I specced mine with the FSD option and in regular city streets it does alright. Apple carplay and android auto arent available and even if they were I wouldn't use them. Unlike the BMW where I used to keep my phone with me and use it quite a bit when parked. I almost never use my phone in my model 3, even when parked! I instead would rather use the arcade/toybox system. I think other than quality tesla does everything else right!

Roll out for Tesla is only for quarter-mile time, not 0-62. Tesla wins in ALL areas, perhaps except for the interior design, if that's how you like it. Faster, further, better storage, flexible, tech, games, autopilot (enhance cruise with lane-centering of at least 90 mph, personally tested), web browsers, interior volume, remote access and control via the smart phone app, multiple user profiles including driving profile, remote start from half a world away, dog mode, camp mode, one paddle driving, 4x dash cam, 4x security cam, expansive glass roof, cargo-carrying volume... want more? Bmw has remote control via an app, multi user interface, driving profiles, dash cam and has a larger volume of rear storage in the back. The m40 and m3p are also essentially equal speed with one head to head video showing the m40 marginally faster in a quarter mile. While that gimmicky tech is cool, tesla doesn't natively support Android Auto or Apple Carplay like the BMW does. There are also several other features that tesla does not offer like a Heads up display. With bmw still receiving the EV tax credit in the states my money is on the bmw.

As with other reviews comparing the BMW i4 and Tesla Model 3, what has become clear is that such a comparison is actually quite difficult for all except the M50 vs Performance, where the speed & acceleration numbers are very similar. What differs in this specific case is the ability for M50 buyers to choose not to have all the driver aids, 'toys' and other tech that come as standard on the Model 3 Performance, but overall performance remains similar. If they *do* choose to spec an M50 to a similar standard as the Model 3 Performance, it then becomes a much more expensive vehicle. I'm due to test drive an M50 next week - fully loaded in the UK, that's a £75k car, vs £60k for the Model 3 Performance. For an extra £15k (~25%), I would expect the BMW to be considerably better than the Tesla, which it may prove to be in terms of driving comfort, build quality, etc. Comparing the eDrive40 vs Model 3 is more difficult because of the significant difference in performance vs the Model Long Range (LR). Having looked at the BMW configurator in the UK, speccing an eDrive40 to be similar to the Model 3 LR results in the eDrive40 costing about £63k, again about 25% more than a 'standard' Model 3 LR (£50k). Sure, you don't *have* to choose all the 'toys' on the BMW, but that's a big difference in price, especially when the lower performance is also accounted for. For those that really aren't worried about performance, that brings the basic Model 3 (formerly known as Standard Range+) into the picture, which in the UK is £43k. The spec is very similar to the Model 3 LR, apart from the range & acceleration (305mi vs 374mi WLTP, and 5.8s vs 4.2s to 60mph, respectively). The cheapest eDrive40 is £51.9k, but that's "poverty spec" - to match the standard kit on a Tesla Model 3 will cost about £63k, some £20k (~46%) more than a Model 3. All of which to say, the comment in the video (at 11:45) that "...these cars largely match up on price" is definitely NOT true in the UK, at least not when the specs are 'matched' (as closely as possible). The price difference will undoubtedly sway some buyers towards the Model 3, but there will undoubtedly be many that choose a BMW for all the real and perceived differences highlighted. However, that choice likely comes with an increased price tag that this video (and others) don't really make as clear as they might. Always happy to help...!

Also good to know for potential buyers; BMW is using brushed motors. You know; the type of motors that are not used in wachingmachines anymore for a decade. BMW may in many aspects be considered a more lux brand than tesla in these price ranges, but i cant help but feel that when tesla does it right (as in if u end up with a non faulty car) then theres more bang for ur buck here. More affordable, longveity, makes more sense to go for one. But if i had the money id ofc strongly consider a diff brand, deff more rare to see an i4.

Great review but please keep in mind a point you didn't differentiate on. Tesla loosely calls their cars AWD. In fact the front wheels are only driven when the rear wheels lose traction. In a benign climatic environment as with the UK, the front motors wouldn't be engaged for most of the time - may be drifting around roundabouts. The BMW has PM motors front and back so drives them 100% of the time. Essentially, the review is comparing a RWD car with a AWD one. Please see the Tesla Bjorn videos where the diagnostic scan tool panel is being shown and look for parameters F power and R power. If they are zero, then no power is being applied to the motor... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i7aoeZCazZyVgWw.html The front wheels are also driven during a launch for a few seconds and when speeds exceed 165kmph - though it would probably need special cooling as the front more is of type induction and would heat up very quickly as 10-15% of the inputted power transfers to heat and not towards moving the car. Power is also applied to the front motors during pre-conditioning, and the heat generated is used to warm the batteries prior to supercharging.

Well the i4 came out for like what? A few months? You aren’t going to get any maintenance and reliability out of those stats. Tesla is a hit or miss. When you have to repair stuff it’s really expensive, that’s mostly due to all repairs are done internally at Tesla service centers and they replace components at a large scale instead of the components being modules parts you could easily swap out. EVs don’t have very good reliability in my opinion. They might have less maintenance(not repairs), but they have a ton of bugs that could shut down systems when you least expect and you can’t really fix any of them on your own. I hope they keep improving them, because I really like the EV drive, not visiting gas stations and the quietness. But they also give me headaches that I wouldn’t experience with a gasoline car.

I wouldn't call a Model 3 a luxury car except for the price. Options are very limited in comparison to traditional luxury brands. Minimalist does not define luxury. I can get leather on a Camry. The i4 in contrast you can get in any color, Different color seats and material. Upgrade the sound system. Upgrade the suspension.Upgrade the lights. Sure some of these cost more money, but many of the options in the Model 3 cost more more money. ($1000 more for white seats! Really?!)

Nah, not even if you don't include the $7500 federal tax credit. (which you didn't) The i4 40 is $60,025 MSRP with comparable options, $52,525 after federal credit. The model 3 LR is $51,000 (no more federal credits). The i4 costs $1,525 more when comparably specced. Options I added to get that price are Driving Assistance Professional Package, Parking Assistance Package, Premium Package, Drive Recorder, Wireless Device Charging, and Harman Kardon speakers. The i4 40 does have some items the model 3 doesn't have. Hatchback rear opening. I believe it has a standard tow hook. Rear air suspension. Driver's cluster. More noise insulation. Better interior materials. 360 degree parking camera. I'd say the model 3 LR is close with the i4 40, but the model 3 takes the win overall due to AWD and performance for the price. The i4 50 beats out the model 3P even with the $3k-$4k price premium, IMO.

@@updlate4756 I agree with everything here. But it's crazy that BMW needs a $7,500 tax credit to compete with an AWD version of a Tesla. If we used the RWD Tesla it wouldn't even be close. Of course it's very difficult to do an apples to apples comparison so people should just buy what they like.
@updlate4756
@updlate4756 2 жыл бұрын
@@musicjohn1 That isn't exactly how it works. The tax credits were always means to subsidize the OEM, not the customer. The OEM determines the price people will pay for the vehicle to match supply and demand. If there's a tax credit, the OEM simply increases the MSRP by the credit amount. Voila, the customer pays the same, but the OEM gets that credit money as a subsidy. Tesla and GM already used up their credits. As they lost their credits, they cut prices accordingly. Price to the consumer was the same with and without the credit. Sadly, the structure of the credit, the media, and the EV community overall have mislead people into thinking the tax credit was a discount for the customer. Nope; never was and never was meant to be. It was meant to subsidize OEMs in a bid to convince them to develop and manufacture plug in electric cars. I imagine once BMW's credit runs out, they'll cut their prices accordingly using factory incentives. Although their tax credit likely won't begin to sunset until 2023 or 2024 based on the number of BEVs they're selling in the US. They still have about 60k vehicles left in their quota. Like most OEMs, most of their PEV supply is going to Europe right now where the subsidies are often much larger, the emissions regulations are more strict, and the delta between electric prices and gas prices is higher; making EVs cheaper to run and higher in demand.

Fair comparison but you skipped build quality, headlights and technology features like phone screen mirroring called Apple Car Play and Android Auto. It’s more than your music that’s jilted by Tesla. Seamless phone commands by one button press: “Navigate me to home (or any other destination) via Waze.” Before you get buckled up the map is waiting for you with fastest route through ever changing traffic with the help of other user added notices all at no cost. Yes your phone listens better than many vehicles so to ditch phone integration is no small cold shoulder. Having text read to you and dictating a reply while your phone is stowed and charging is the only legitimate way to stay responsive to and responsible with the safety of others. The adaptive headlights are arguably better and I already incensed wrath by mentioning build quality. #cheers

The voicecommands in the Tesla are proven to be best by a very long margin. Tesla does not need any other system to work. The new Model 3 has full matrix headlights with a resolution so high it can write letters to surface that is shined upon. This feature is currently not active due to regulations so they now act as normal headlights but when the activate it, it will be an absolute new benchmark. Just wait and you will see. Oke build quality then, on the surface the BMW gives a more luxerious feeling. But the (expensive) EV tech is bad build quality. Brushed motors that will break and need service, heavy materials adding 400KG additional weight etc.

So is voice controls teslas just understand your commands and the navi system in a tesla is tailored to the car (it routes you to supercharging networks automatically). Id give the build a pass considering it does so so many things right. i4 m50 is faster at the higher end of the speed range. The 3P is faster otherwise. Tesla's tech is overrated. The only real thing of note is FSD, which is now a $12,000 option and isn't close to fully functional yet. Integrated mapping and charger route guidance is Tesla's strongest point; I imagine that has a lot to do with them running their own charging network. Otherwise, these cars have similar capabilities. ADAS is similar; Tesla may have a leg up, so long as phantom breaking doesn't happen. Both have integrated dash cam, albeit Tesla has sentry mode when the car is off. Tesla has some games and integrated netflix / twitch / youtube, but phone mirroring is possible in BMWs and any phone app can be shown on the screen and sound played through the speakers. Games on the Tesla aren't great; if someone cares about games, they can just use their phone, laptop, tablet, or a real hand held platform like a Switch or Steam deck. I guess there's fart mode and light shows though. ;)
