When they did the cannonball (same car as this) they realized they had to arrive at or above 10% to speed up the ramp, same thing you experienced here. Great video, you rock always!!

I recently drove my 2022 M3 RWD across Canada from the West coast and back. I had no problems with range and was able to make several ~1000km runs whilst on the Prairies, in ~10 hours. I didn't time it well but one run was 950km in less than 9.5 hours and I lost about 20mins because we charged too long several times. I am sure that if Bjorn could do the 1000km Challenges in Canada on the Trans Canada (Hwy 1) between Winnipeg and Calgary, that he could improve his times even more. You can cruise at a steady 125kph and there are V3 Supercharger stations spaced at 100 - 150km all along Hwy 1. There are some 200 and 350kw CCS1 stations there as well, but then reliability becomes a factor, although I used some of these as well, especially for the final charge during dinner, before checking into our hotel.

Taking the size of the car and the fact that there is no 800V system into account, this car is awesome… high efficiency, high power charging with a very good peak AND average charging power… amazing!!!

It's amazing that we arrived in less than 9 hours. 3 years ago the faster BEVs were just under 10 hours. And the summer/winter difference has also narrowed a lot, with the Model S it's about 13% more consumption, a few years ago it was more like 20%.

I remember wondering how long it would be before any EV could get down to the magical 10 hour mark, let alone below it. Best back then was maybe 11-12 hours or so... must have been something like 2014-2015 or so?

Great video! Can’t really get much faster than that really…, as you need few min stops too… I agree for the odd long trip with do on our 2021 model 3…, the car is always ready before us, and either I have to rush my family or I have to come out and move the car…

Agree, you can't keep up with the car when traveling with family. Just had a 600km trip from The Netherlands, through Germany in a Model3 LR AWD 2019...stops tend to be too long for optimal speed. In 20-30 mins, you will hit around 90%. When traveling with family driving around 2 hours and having a 20 stop seems pretty normal. With short and optimal stops, I could have saved around 10-15 minutes of charging time maximum...on a trip of 7+ hours. Teslas and V3 superchargers rule. Also the changing of charging stations on route was pretty easy to do...on the right lane, on standard AP.

Thanks Bjorn for doing this test with MS LR Palladium. I have 2022 MSLR and love my car and you just made my day demonstrating how great a car the MS LR is. I have the same tires on my MS and have averaged greater than 4 miles/kW since delivery.

Bjørn, the slow ramp up has always be a thing below 12% SOC. Try plugging in above 12% and it will immediately ramp up to max speed.

Battery swapping sounds so great on paper but it sure seems like a problem if it gets popular. You now need at least two batteries for each vehicle - who pays for that? It is also far more expensive to build a swap station than to add a charger - who pays for that? It also seems like a big point of failure with all those extra moving parts. If nothing else, it should be interesting to watch it all play out over the next few years.

hello bjord, congratulations for this achievement. but I am convinced that if you had to drive on a quieter road axis zn term of traffic and that you recharged only with the 250 KW supercharger, if you would arrive before the Nio ET5....🎉

Brilliant video and content again. What a car. Range and with superchargers unprecedented. Would love to buy one but I have seen the middle backseat. I have 3 kids and there seems to be a hump in the backrest and looks very uncomfortable. What is your experience? And does the model x have the same issue?

Great video as always Bjørn! How about bringing a stopwatch with you, which you can start and stop as the deductions need to be taken? It could leave out the ambiguity of only counting minutes.

How do you measure a 10 km road construction where speed limit is lower? You can't do that with a stopwatch.

@@bjornnyland I think you're right anyway that the point is proven that best EVs now come with no time penalty if the chargers are available. For most of us, that's quite a big "if." But for practical purposes the results are accurate enough. This test and the earlier one with the same car suggest about an 8% penalty in lost efficiency for a 10°C temperature drop. It might be worth doing additional very cold and very warm tests to get a nice little Excel graph.

@@bjornnyland You just need to know the distance on the usual road between the point where you were turned off and the point where you were allowed to re-enter. Knowing the average speed of that stretch of highway you can estimate how long it would take you under normal conditions. Then to know how much you have to adjust, you just have to know how long you have been driving off the highway and subtract what you have calculated in the previous step. In this case I am considering that the distance is approximately the same, otherwise you would have to subtract from the odometer the actual distance you have driven off the highway and add the distance between the detour point and the re-entry point.

All we need is Pantograph lanes now and we're set for on-the-fly charging. Pantograph raises from the car like electric rail trains, charges for 15min while you drive 30km, and you're back off the grid for 200km more.

As the owner of an old S90D ('16), hearing "only 145kW" saddens me a bit as the best I can hope for is to get a short glimpse of 120kW on a good day. Mine still charges for free though, so I'm not complaining ;-)

Hi Bjorn, first of all, your videos are so cool, and i've been watching videos from yours very beginning of filming with tesla :). I've question regarding olders tesla model s 85d 2015. I've noticed that when i charge my tesla, let say up to 80%, and turn off from charger, there is almost always some noise, and buttery drains like few percentage per day. By the way, i don't drive car every day, and it just sits on my drive way and drain it self 😅. Is that normal or what is yours experiance?

Great videos. 1000km challenge is the best. How about doing a 1500km test. You don't need to do regularly, and maybe only once. Just to see the difference between 1000km and 1500km, for people who like to cross Europe in a single stretch. Probably need a co-driver then.

Its a bit crazy, not many people would use less time driving - if they use a fossile vs EV. Of course some extreme use cases the fossile would win, but most people dont even drive 1000km in one run.

400km of driving(120km/h+) and then 20min break. That`s only comparable to fossil. Model 3, Y under $100k can do it.(model S in Europe over 100k) i4 and EQE can do it... And Ioniq6. That`s the problem... Basically only model 3 makes sense, in terms of price for mass market...(and still, very expensive). EV`s have long way to go to match fossil in that regard.

@@DG-uv3zw well the MY has even more space, and about the same in most other ways. Yes there are no good 30k EVs, but there will be soon. You have to wait for the next Tesla. But that’s just have the market works, you start with the expensive cars and work your way down from there. EVs a still very new and an evolving technology. You can’t expect it to offer everything to everyone when there is only one company making money at it. I’ve had Model 3, Y and X to. And I think the Model 3 is one off the best cars you could buy on the market today if you consider cost as well. But the Model Y is probably the best car most people could have. I’ve had Porsche Panamera and Cayenne before but really think Tesla I better.

The EQS had 21 inch wheels though. Maybe EQS on 19 inch can match this?

The width of the tire is also significant. EQS had 265 front and rear. Tesla had 255 front and 285 rear. I think the tires should have similar efficiency. EQS hits max 207 kW whereas Tesla hits 250 kW. EQS can't match Tesla.

@@bjornnyland the Model S also had aero wheel covers right? The EQS could have a much more efficient tire setup (19 inch with covers) than in your test. I think your giving width too much weight in your assumption, especially considering that the EQS has wider front tires.

Proving the uselessness of battery swap. It is the same time as a swapper. In real world road trips, the stops would be even longer anyway for food/toilet/drink, so this swap is essentially pointless. Might only work for high-use public transit vehicle or delivery vehicles.

Perhaps not that useless, maybe for a fleet of city buses it's a good option: faster to swap than to recharge battery to 90%; and less wear on battery packs because there's no need to fast charge batteries that are out of the buses

@@stefanschulthess5397 No problems at all. It was a bit of an issue the first few weeks, but that’s just a matter of cognitive memory. Now after 5 months it almost as natural as “the old way”. When I drive other cars I have a tendency to press the volume button when I’m about to turn😆 When you drive in all other situations it’s so nice and easy. Specially with auto lanechange.

Eastern Europe in general needs more locations. I will do a roadtrip soon, and I can still see the former iron curtain on the Supercharger map. East of that (except DDR), I will have to think. West of that, I can pretty much throw a rock from one supercharger location to the next. 😅 It will be "fun" getting som Balkan charging apps to work.

It's not that bad. With GreenWay transitioning to 100kW+ chargers, you can travel anywhere pretty easily. 350 kW's are still not common enough, so it won't be as fast as in Norway, but I've taken my Nissan Leaf across the entire country without issues.

@@geirmyrvagnes8718 GreenWay is a very good option since they also have roaming CCS stations in the whole region. The next operator would be Elocity (mostly AC near or at hotels, restaurants, turist atractions but they have quite few DC as well). The third is Orlen Charge (it is not user-friendly, but it is Poland's biggest network) if you are planning to use mostly highways then you can check IONITY. Tesla super chargers in Poland can be used only by Teslas.

Not at all. People still use 1000 km challenge as a full stack stress test to see how good cars are. Don't change it if it ain't broken.

@@GoldenCrocThat's not quite true. If you could battery swap by leaving the car parked next to the swap station, then just return to it a three or four minutes later, you've then kind of beaten the ICE car by the time that's it's filling with petrol.

@@londonwestman1 Thats the thing, you dont need to fill the best ICE cars on a 1000km run, thus it is impossible to beat, without the human being the limit. Since this test was always about the car, not human limitations I dont agree with starting to include them. Also, just as Bjorn said, when you go at 9 hours or so, its effectively a "done deal", problem is solved. I think one would be hard pressed to find anyone thats in more of a regularly scheduled rush that they cant fit in a 30minute paus every 10 hours.

Long trips, especially with a Tesla, are not a big deal anymore. But nevertheless I'm collecting informations about fossil cars after more that 1,5 years and 45.000 kilometers Model 3 LR, because Tesla is not able to offer Matrix LED. It's just sad. Even Tesla cars are very efficient and (mostly) a pleasure to drive.

Thanks for the test! Bjorn, you should really do the German autobahn 1000km challenge. Who is driving 120km/h in summer?:) The usual driving speed is 140-150km/h in Lithuania, Poland, Germany, and most European countries.

You should do a new range test now that the model s comes with carbon ceramic brakes and see if that makes any difference on consumption.

We also have to remember that this is an two year old car. It’s only new I Europe. Had this test been done when it was launched in the US it would have been even more impressive.

Can there be enough swap stations? People will wait for the cars in front of them. Can there be enough charging stations on if everyone goes electric for public holidays? Thus regular time will be much longer. Dont get me wrong I like commuting in electric car to work.

If you can make money from building it, it will be built. Charging? Yes. Brand specific swap stations for cars? Remains to be seen.

I'd say chargers are easier to scale up than swap stations. Compare 24 supercharger stalls to a single battery swap stations. Getting enough power from the grid is a challenge, but not all 24 stalls have to charge at 200kW simultaneously. I'm not too worried.

During peak travelling days/weeks you would have to wait in ques. Dont think its possible to build enough chargers or swapstations. The only way it to use incitements, i e lower charging prices. But dont forget, during those crazy travelling days other problems occur that also affect ICE cars. Ques for restrooms or restaurants etc etc

220kwh is not that efficient, or am I wrong? My Tesla Model 3 LR is doing about 180kwh at higher speeds.

The Model 3 is one of the most efficient EVs ever, so you can't just say it's not efficient because it doesn't match Model 3

Model 3 is at least 2 classes smaller. Bjørn had 186kWh on his 1000km with the M3 LR. And Model S is in slightly worse weather and ø2 km/h faster than the EQS 450+, on the same consumption - so yes, it's a very good consumption, but we will definitely see some improvements in the future.

If I can give anyone advice I would recommend NEVER BUY A TESLA! The worst customer service and they might have the tech but unless you want to go back and forth from service because you have to much time on your hands I strongly advise you to not buy one! An X Tesla owner to never be again! 14 times to service in 2 1/2 years is almost every 2 months. Yeah it didn’t cost me out of my pocket but it still cost me a lot of time!

It's generally much better than a dealership without question, which is not very hard to do. I'm so glad not to step foot in a dealership ever again, it was always a disgusting experience. Never again will I buy a car that depends on a dealership network for service.
