Our Edmunds EV expert Dan Edmunds, director of vehicle testing, tests out the 2016 Tesla Model X EV's towing prowess while hauling a 1,500-pound Happier Camper HC1 fiberglass trailer. After all, this electric vehicle does have a tow hitch and a 3,500-pound tow rating.
0:38 - Let's go camping
2:12 - First stop
4:58 - Detour
6:22 - Drop the trailer
In Part 1 of the test, Dan drives the loaded-up Model X along the Tesla Supercharger network in California, from Santa Monica to Mojave to Lone Pine, with an emergency stop in Inyokern because of range anxiety. This first day of driving 217 miles took about 8 hours.

My first reaction was : Incredible, a $80,000 SUV can tow a tiny trailer ? that's... huge !? Seriously, this gives a slightly more precise idea of what to expect in term of range in these conditions...

Tesla should sell a camper with additional batteries in it. It would be expensive. It would have its own power when parked and add range to the host automobile.

Fatboy, trailering an auxiliary battery pack isn't practical. Tesla could've made the Model S go 500 miles from the getgo, but they calculated in the cost of batteries, typical expected/practical range and came up with 300 miles being the best compromise in cost, range and safety. The extra weight of the trailer to support the battery weight is also dead weight.

This brings up a key point about truly useable range on a trip vs stated max range. Since you normally on charge to 80% and it tries to get you to recharge before it drops to 20%, you really only use 60% of the battery and have 60% of the range. This is what makes the model 3-75 a much more practical car for long trips than the model 3-50. Most people are thinking “220 miles is more than I need to make my trip across country” but in reality that’s 132 miles, 2 hrs driving between charges. The model 3-75 would allow about 200 miles between stops, so around 3 hrs, and still take the same amount of time to supercharge as the 3-50 would from 20% to 80%. As battery technology gets better, we can charge faster and to higher state of charge without significant battery degradation. But if you don’t own the car and only lease it, you can drive it like you stole it and charge to 100% every single time.

Was the car charged to 100 percent or just 80 percent? Because the first 80 percent is fast, but then the last 20 percent doubles the charge time. I would try to take advantage of that where possible and save time in the long run. This makes for a good case to add more range in the future to Model X I'm thinking. It may not make as much sense for the sedans, 300 miles is good enough for most people, but I could see some benefit to having 500 miles of base range in the camper tugging SUV model. Would also go nicely with the planned supercharger upgrades down the road. That aside, there's no need to just stand there for 20 minutes, it's a camping trip, go enjoy some coffee or hamburgers lol. Interesting experiment for sure, and sounds like fun!

If you do the math it took you about 120kwh. With a 90kwh car all it should take is a top up midway like 40-50kwh which should go in in like 30 minutes. Offcourse I say that having the final numbers in hand but anyone with a trailer should gain the experience to plan in a more effective way rather quickly with the Tesla. You just have to trust it as you said!

I take it you don't know. One magazine ran the Volt out of electricity and then ran it out of gas then put gas back in it and it started up and kept going so yes it never has to be plugged in. It is UNLIMITED. IT NEVER HAS TO BE PLUGGED IN. EVER. It just becomes a 37 mpg electric car (even though the engine is able to assist the electric motor, it is still driven by the electric motor). That's why is doesn't have gears. The rotor turns either forward or backward as demand requires.

@DanEdmunds
@DanEdmunds 6 жыл бұрын
oisiaa It’s a P90D. Range depends on load. The rated range of a Model X can only be achieved by averaging 330 Wh/mi or less. Day One’s average was 550, I think. And we pulled a different trailer last year and averaged 623 Wh/mi, I think. Worst single leg was over 1,000 into a headwind. Point is, consumption is near double, which means range is about half. You’ll arrive much emptier than when not towing, and that severely lengthens the charge time.

Alan Bowers Actually I found out Autopilot is disabled in trailer mode. Driver fatigue could make stop and go ,staying the same speed and keeping perfectly in lane difficult. The car is just making constant millisecond adjustments. It won't make much of a difference in range on this trip, as Superchargers are too slow for towing long distances. Supercharger version 2 with more than 350kw charging should help more on this trip.
@louly3212
@louly3212 6 жыл бұрын
Alan Bowers average tesla driver is not that smart or careful with the foot, most drivers really. Autopilot serves to not turn the wheels unnecessarily also, how much more efficient tho who knows but consider extra calculations of the computers onboard. Finally... That big ass screen is after all running on electricity! Where's options for whoever wants to gain a couple miles tesla? If I was to make an electric car it would be atleast double range of this shitty tesla :/ lol I thought he was gna pull out some solar panel shit.

I don't understand - add an auxiliary camera on a trailer and send the signal to the Tesla console? Any other cars do that? The Model X already has a high def camera in the rear. I have an idea, maybe Tesla should have a satellite port so you could watch TV on the screen. I guess with all its fancy technology it should do that, too. Yeah, there's something wrong with Tesla because it doesn't support someone else's video signal. Sheesh. By the way, Mountainhobo, you must have conceded defeat on the hydrogen vehicle discussion. According to you, I don't have the ability to reason but you seem to not want to argue with my facts. Coward. You lost that one, how about a discussion on how "green" batteries are? I bet you have LOTS of "facts" on that one, right out of Shell Oil's marketing material. Or the government subsidy argument. In the end, you will learn nothing. But others reading the discussion might. You will buy and advocate for a 2,000 moving part vehicle that burns oil one time and can kill you with the exhaust if you leave it running in your garage. I, however, will use a car with only one moving part in the motor, make my own energy without the permission of the Koch Brothers and have a car with an 8-year unlimited mile warranty and batteries rated for 300,000 to 500,000 miles.

That's too much charging time. You're also not counting that the charging time is simultaneous to a break (like lunch or bathroom). I just got back from a 2,400 mile trip in a Model S and the charging was inconsequential to my driving as I don't like to drive for hours on end without getting out. I drive 2-3 hours then stop for 30 minutes, which is exactly fitting with charging.

I drive 2-3 hours, however many miles that takes. I stop then for 20 or more minutes, which is adequate for charging for another 2-3 hours of driving. I said that in my comment, what lengths will go to when they don't read... The driver in the video spent too much time charging. Mountainhobo, what a jackass. Do you own an EV? Do you mistake a Model X for a pickup truck? I own an EV (Model S) and know several Model X owners, including those who tow. The driver in the video did a good job but the owners I know get more range than he did. In fact, I know one that tows a large boat with more range. The driver also stayed too long charging, contributing to his delays. If you're not a candidate for an EV, don't buy one. In the meantime, a person hauler like the Model X that can tow is amazing in my book. But you keep buying that oil, Exxon loves you.

Dear Mr. Edmunds, The driving behavior that I witnessed just now while viewing this video may be why some folks have auto accidents while driving and even talking and while driving if you can believe it. Now how many times did you take your hands off of the steering wheel while at speeds in excess of 70 miles per hour while pulling an R.V.! And this little demonstration performed while driving on the freeway with the sun shade, my god man I would not ride with you anywhere and anytime ever! Now on a different note the little travel trailer was very cool. I liked the size and shape of the unit. Thank you for pointing out about being able to see all the way through the unit, now that was a great design element. I have seen other Tesla's X on the road here in Palm Springs, Ca. many times but not in that color, wow does color make a difference in a vehicle's appearance. The X's I have seen while driving around our beautiful valley have all been pretty ugly, but the color of this particular unit was most pleasing to my eyes. I would have liked to have been able to see the inside of the trailer as well. Perhaps that is shown in 'Part Two' of your video. Other than the driving behavior of the Edmunds editor the video was entertaining to watch, thank you.

Thanks for a real world test...e.v.simply aren't up to snuff..way too long charging vs. driving. This is a controlled test...I'd hate to have to travel at night and pull into some of these locations and sit there for a charge...seems dicey. Until e.v. can go 500 to 600 miles on a single real world charge and recharge completely understand 15 minutes, they simply won't be able to compete with i.c.e. I hope the e.v. tech gets to that point, but as of now, unless one is driving in a city or a daily commute, e.v is a toy

Josh Gillispie a diesel will get 500 miles to a tank....but you're missing the point...even if a gas car only gets 300 miles on a tank, one can refuel in five minutes with a huge network of gas stations. ..with an ev, you're doing math...do I stop at this station or risk going to the next one...with a 500 mile range, range anxiety disappears and it reduces overall charging time on a trip

My 05 civic si ( best case) can only do around 475 miles and that's only having around 4 or 5 stops ( motion sickness- can only drive around 1 to 2 hours straight at a time then MUST take a break anyways for 15 minutes). If the charging for at least 80 to 85% of a full ev "tank" was down to 15 minutes or less, then you'll definitely see the EV boom really skyrocket.

wierd, 500 miles is probably 8 straight hours of driving. So tell me the last time you drove 8 hours with no break, took 5 minutes to refuel and then drove another 8 hours straight.

Bullshit. It doesn't take 6 hours. Not even in a Tesla. You may be towing a vehicle but it only takes 20 min to charge to 80% at a supercharger (bathroom break) and I also notice you didn't have the Model X in travel mode which extends the mileage for a traveler using the power more efficiently regardless of tow mode which only monitors the trailer hookup. Nice try.

Well, the consumption is double when you are towing, and because you are using more, it takes longer to charge. Since charging tapers as you approach full, double the charge is not double the time. More like 2.5 to 3x

Without actual government incentives, it wouldn't have taken off. But continuing the government incentive is also not sustainable. You have to understand the actual process how these batteries are made and how they are not recyclable. That's why is not actually sustainable if all gas transportation are replaced by electric in the near future
@edmundscars
@edmundscars 6 жыл бұрын
This is a good conversation here. With the batteries not being recyclable, and oil based fuels being a taboo subject in the world, what's going to happen? One could argue that it takes the same coal/nuclear generating station to make the electricity that you'll put in your future EV. So do we plaster our open tracts of land with renewable energy production? Windmills and Photovoltaic solutions, so the generating stations run on clean energy? Can we rely on the R&D surrounding battery power to avoid having another influx of used up hardware to stack in a landfill somewhere? I agree with 1betterthanyou1 in the fact that this is new tech and it has a ton of room for improvement while gasoline/diesel has been improved upon to death. But I also agree with SoloFantasy in the fact that the U.S. government's incentivizing of the EV market, while boosting it tremendously, will eventually run out. When the free money disappears, are EVs still going to be something OEMs still focus on?

Alan Bowers ICE technology is improving quite bit as well. You now have mid-size family cars that make 200+HP and return 40+ MPG. That was unimaginable just a decade ago. As for the improvements in PEVs, we are seeing improvements, but the main reason why we're seeing gains on the ICE is because of the money shift and subsidies they get. Without them, we wouldn't be talking about them. Also, we talk as if PEVs are brand new to the world, but the reality is that PEVs are nearly as old as ICE cars, but ICE is preferred because they perform better and are much, much more economical.
@jerryortiz909
@jerryortiz909 6 жыл бұрын
1betterthanyou1 Well, you're wrong. Like I just said, EV tech isn't new. And what stone has it written that gas has no room for improvement? People have been saying that for decades, but we keep improving them and improving them. Honetly, I think carbon-neutral synthetic fuels are more likely to replace gasoline than EV drive systems. It would require no change to anything, just run different fuels.

Finishing your point, the " let me see how big of WAGON wheels I can cram into my hooptee that ISN'T meant for bigger than 16 or 17" wheels". This is black thug " i'm big pimpin" cultural thing that just needs to die already. It is asinine to have such a SMALL amount of side wall of your tire to rim ratio size. Why? That's easy and simple. When you hit the first bump or pothole in the road, that = immediate blow out. It's just stupid Also the more sidewall of tire you have, the more comfy the ride because there is much bigger amount of physical air cushion-room between the rim and the inside of the each end of the tire. I'd rather "upgrade" my Tesla model s to a 16" rim with a 275/55 r16 tire than what they currently have that comes stock.

Tesla is shady and such a joke. I was about to pull the trigger for a Model X only to find out that the actual prices were 6% higher than what's advertised on the website and the sales people just stopped replying when I asked why. And since when is a car with 1300 miles on it considered a "new" car -- I mean take a look at the "new" inventory on their website. On top of that it's a joke that the website still shows the CA $2500 incentive when it's only applicable to low income households (yea sure low income households will buy a $120k+ toy car...). And what's with pricing the "gas savings" into the price that's just BS. Why don't they just price the car at -$150k because the car costs $150k but you will save $300k on gas over the next 100 years... Sadly the wife still wants a Model X...
@justsomeguy934
@justsomeguy934 6 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, you buy a car from a "respectable" car dealer and see how shady that is. Of COURSE Tesla counts in savings on fuel. Gee, I remember some desperate car dealerships giving away a "year's worth of gas" to buy a car a while ago. Sure seems like they were counting in that reduction in operating cost in the price of the car. And why shouldn't Tesla mention a tax incentive? It might apply to you, it might not. I got a tax incentive when I bought my Tesla, but depending on the state you live in you might not. Tesla was 100% accurate on the price of my car so I'm not sure where you're getting "shady" from. If you don't want one, don't buy one. But comparing direct sales when I used a browser to buy my car vs. a stealership is no comparison. I'll never buy a gas car again and never use a stealership again, either.

EV Owner you've obviously drank too much kool aid. Firstly I did end up buying the Model X and so far so good -- I did end up paying the higher price -- the explanation was that the website wasn't "as up to date" as market prices (w/e) and there was nothing that I could have done (take it or leave it). Secondly I never once compared direct sale with car dealerships. In fact my last 4 cars were bought from brokers so stop making stuff up. Just because you bought a product doesn't mean you have to worship it. You're the worse kind of owner of anything.

Wow 6 hours to go 200 miles?!?!? Get a truck and you can tow a real trailer and not need to waste 3 hours recharging every 80 miles. Electric cars are only practical for small daily driving, not road trips or towing.

+Kevin Bowman - Well given they had a fair amount of range at each stop they could have cut down their recharge time and probably save themselves an hour, also this is going to be a non-issue in 5-6 years for the vast majority of people as battery tech improves. It's not like we could drive cars for 400-500 miles on a tank of gas for the longest time, heck most cars on the road today still can't go that far on average. It's just less time to fill up at a gas pump then recharge an EV.

Josh Gillispie Ummm........since when can an electric current be saved and stored? Man made electrons dissipate within a few seconds unless they are fed into an existing electrical current. Most homeowners lack the required knowledge and equipment to convert electricity into another type of power source. I know there aren't any residential household reactors or power plants in my neighborhood. Following your logic, I guess more people should buy gas generators and make and store their own electricity to use whenever they need it. Who needs power companies in your world?
@scbaman9470
@scbaman9470 6 жыл бұрын
Solar panels and batteries have been a thing for a while now actually and can power a house and charge an EV. Also, you can use a natural gas, gasoline, or propane generator to charge an EV in extreme situations. Gas shortages are common during natural disasters, I've been in a couple where our power came back (1 week) before gas was became readily available again. EV's are not for everyone and its obvious there are scenarios where things may be a bit hairy but we will continue to see them improve in efficiency and capacity. Most homes have two vehicles. Most of the EV owners I know have more than 1 vehicle with at least one of them having an ICE. You can make out as many scenarios as you want, but there will always be situations where one may not have electricity or gas available but only one of the two can be generated at home in unlimited quantity. We will see more of that as time goes on and we progress as a civilization.

This test shows where we’re at, but it also shows how far they have to go.
