Here is a detailed long term review from the original owner with everything you need to know about buying a used one. I go into detail about our experiences with our 2017 Tesla Model X with FSD and discuss whether you should buy a used 2017 Tesla Model X or a brand new Tesla Model Y.

We have 40 K km on out MX, built in Apr 2017. We did brakes but had the rotors turned last year with pad replacement. I think it is the salt causing the brakes to seize rather than my wife's heavy foot and I have learned how to remove the calipers and lubricate the contact points to prevent that issue from happening again. We have FSD functioning nicely with MCU 1. The biggest issue is the 2-3 minute lag time to load a destination. We now travel with our Model Y which is amazingly snappy so she won't allow the $3300 for the MCU 2 as it doesn't bother her and she is the principle driver. We had an issue with the a/c this year that was covered by warranty. Other than that and the brakes and front lt. bushing and half shaft being replaced under warranty for acceleration vibration that is now fixed it is still a great vehicle and we will be keeping it until the cyber truck shows up and then may pass it down to 1 of our kids (One already got a great deal on our M3) Keep up the great videos, I really enjoy our parallel paths in our Tesla journey

You didn't mention that the all-aluminum body on the Models X and S means there will never be any rust-out. It was one of the selling points when I bought my Dec 2016 90D. I've done the MCU2 + AP3 hardware upgrades (available from Oct 2016 onward). Definitely worth it. Also, my free Supercharging feature is tied to the car itself, rather than to me as the 1st owner (which was a change made to that program in...March? 2017, so it is transferrable upon resale.

I actually have both. A 2017 model x 75D and LR model y. Love both. Upgraded to mcu2 recently and if I could choose one it would be the x. The y is a better drive with the permanent magnetic motors whereas the x has induction motors. But the x just has more fun features like auto close/open doors and they're soft close!!! Plus the driving experience is amazing in the x with the windshield. Really feels like a spaceship. The y is great but the crossbar above the drivers head does feel like it limits yr view. Plus I didnt realize I'd love the hud of the x as much as I do. But I do love the 3/y set up as well.

Enjoyed your honest assessment, the good, bad, and ugly. Very helpful as I have a 2018 Model 3, but want a car that seats and rides higher, as I go hiking/biking at state parks which are not always nicely paved. The Model Y was a thought, but also has the pull and tug door handles which I find cumbersome. So, why not get Model X comfort and luxury, for practically the same price as a new Model Y.
@ElectricCanuck
@ElectricCanuck 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely a consideration. Now that I have a Model Y (traded in the Model 3), I can tell you that the Model X is quite bigger. For people who do a lot of hiking, biking and other outdoor adventures you can't beat the size of the Model X. Also great if you have kids that do sports.

@@ElectricCanuck Hi, another clarification I am confused about. If I should buy a 2017 M-X with FSD and 2.0 hardware, because it has FSD, doesn't that automatically qualify the owner for 3.0 hardware to be installed. I enjoy my Sentry Mode and Dashcam which were given as over the air software updates on my 2018 Model 3. So, I thought 2.0 hardware would also be updated? Sounds like it doesn't. I am confused about the difference between MCU and the 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 hardware. I have 3.0 and it's great for stoplight and stopsign braking. Thanks...
@ElectricCanuck
@ElectricCanuck 3 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, if FSD was purchased on a AP2.0 or 2.5 vehicle, it should automatically qualify for the upgrade. Perhaps on a sale it doesn't qualify? It's a great question that maybe only Tesla can answer. With an older Model X, an upgrade to MCU2 is an absolute requirement in my opinion.

Real world range depends on the season. Rated range was 381 kms 237 miles when brand new. In the summer, I have squeezed 415 kms out the Model X. Winter is another story if sub zero. if you buy a Model X, try to avoid any with VIN ending less than 50,000 units. That was an important point in the manufacture of it, where they completely changed several things about it. The model Y, same thing, preferably do not buy anything below 40,000 VIN units. The model Y is way more efficient than the Model X, is smaller, lighter, no gull wing doors, which are cool, but can be problematic in some situations. You can sleep in both of them. You can put a roof rack on the model Y and you can tow with both, as well. At first I wanted a Model X and have driven them often, but settled on a used Model S until the Model Y was well into its production phase where the bugs were worked out. That is the car I have now (model Y) and it is I think the perfect all around car for anyone who wants full self driving capability, sportiness, utility of storage and hauling and is not primarily luxury oriented.

If you have a young family and active in sports, the space in the Model X is definitely attractive. The good thing about the 2017 is that the MCU can be upgraded, and so can the FSD hardware to “FSD3”. Our 2017 Model X is like new, tech-wise. If size isn’t a consideration, and you don’t mind being lower to the ground, I think a new Model 3 would be a better value, plus you’ll have warranty.

@@ElectricCanuck thank you for the reply, I am in Australia and have booked a 2021 model 3 which I will be getting in Early January, but at the moment I got a offer from the local Tesla dealer for a model X 2017 with Upgraded MCU and FSD hardware can be upgraded when the facility will be available in Australia..It’s done 35,000 kms and the price I am getting the 2017 Model X 75D is the same price as the new model 3 with FSD. Still confused as this is a new zone for me as all my past cars were ICE. What do you recommend for the price wise and finally it’s for my Mrs !!

I looked at two used Model Xs, one had the 1st gen AP, meaning could never be upgraded to FSD. The second one had AP2.0, and had panel gap problem and a small leakage from one of the falcon wing doors which Tesla said they would take care of before delivery. I was thinking what were the options out there within a year's time frame. I found Rivian R1S for $70,000 with 316 miles per charge, which closely matched the price of the second Model X I test-drove two months ago. Plus, the Rivian would be good for the $7,500 (or potentially new $12,500) tax credit (PLUS) California's $2,500 tax rebate. I just cannot resist to wait and buy the brand new EV for me and my wife. Sorry Elon. I own your company's stock, but I really find more wisdom in this case to buy a brand new EV with great incentive. Everyone's situation is different, buy accordingly. May be I will be a customer of Tesla in the future. God bless everyone and please help to save our only Earth and Mother Nature.

The wait for getting a Rivian is longer than if you were to order a new Tesla today. RJ has some work to do in order to meet demand.

This all sounds great, but what would happen when the warranty ends? How much work have you had done under the warranty. I'd like to buy a 2nd hand model s or x but worried about the high maintenance costs as I have heard about the reliability issues and high cost of parts with tesla. If you buy used from tesla you only get a little over a years warranty on the car, except for drive train and battery which is 4 years cover.
@ElectricCanuck

It’s definitely a consideration, no doubt. Our Model X was pretty solid. Under warranty, they fixed a vibration in the front suspension, and that’s it. Individual results do vary though. Cheers.

Tesla people I find it crazy that our day when it come to Tesla people call a 2016 or 2017. Old car we are only in 2020 would you say the same for a BMW 5 that is 3 years old or and Mercedes GLC that’s 3 years to call it Old car, Tesla is so much advance the. Other car and the design still goes with this time even in 2022 the model X will still look modern pls don’t call it a old car anymore 😂🤣

I know why your wife wore out breaks, she’s trying to stop her almost 6000 pound car with no regenerative braking. If that batteries not warm, the regenerative braking doesn’t work and she’s having to use the them. So cut her a break!
