Interesting video ! I have a 2022 MYLR and recently did the longest single day drive in my life , 620 miles from Nykoping in Sweden to Bremen in Germany. I did charge 6 times but purely because I don’t enjoy continuous driving!. If I wanted I could have reduced this to 3 or 4 stops but it would have been uncomfortable for biological reasons! Autopilot was invaluable and on a few occasions on German autobahns my speed exceeded 100mph just to avoid aggressive Porche drivers tailgating me! Definitely the best car I've ever driven in my 74 years!

Just got home from driving from Manchester to Spa, Belgium for the F1. Drive a Model 3 LR. Me, the wife and 2 boys, plus a full boot of clothes and essentials. Set off with 90% charge, stopped at newport pagnell to top up (£17.55) and again at the shuttle entrance (£7.80) and finally in Namur, Belgium (€20.28). This got us to our apartment with plenty of charge then to travel to the circuit and back the next day. We continued to travel to the track and top up the charge at the supercharger on route before returning home. In total it cost £113 charging at various locations across 5 days covering over 1200 miles. As was mentioned in this video, the car could have gone further but with 2 children in the car we had to stop more frequently so we simply charged up at each stop, keeping the charge higher just in case there were any unforeseen occurrences. Not once did i think we would struggle to make the journey, or struggle to find a charger or even have to wait a second queuing for a charger to come free.

Did London to Glasgow the day I flew down to pick up my MS LR, having never owned an Tesla or an EV before. Didn't even buy it from Tesla themselves but the whole setup was seemless, car registered itself to my app instantly and I was able to set off and use chargers no problem. Car wanted to do 1 stop but I needed 3 in the end, the car didn't even need the other 2. 8 hours travelled and absolutely no hassle whatsoever. There will always be people that believe the Daily Mail etc but what can you do....

Thanks Richard, interesting video. There will, as you say, be people out there who maintain that they do 600 - 800 miles non stop and all I can say is they must be a danger to other road users. You should not be driving that far, non stop, for any reason. It's clear that you were tired towards the end of the trip, as I would have been. Doing that trip in a similar size, diesel, with similar performance etc, would cost you more and when you add the potential for cheap rate tariffs and/or subscription public charging the cost saving is even better. I have a relatively thirsty EV SUV (2.7 miles per kW average) and the cost per mile is around 10% of my previous and comparable petrol. On a longer trip, where 35% is home charging, the rest subscription Ionity, it is around 40% of the cost of the previous ICE SUV. What is also a consideration is that in the video, you are doing a trip which shows the EV in its' worst light, and it is still better than the rest. If most of your driving is within range of your home charger (if you have one) it is incredibly cheap. depending on the car, less than 2p per mile (mine is around 2.4p). Given the current rates, you'd have to have an equivalent standard of ICE car doing 300+mpg - can someone name me one? Of,course there will be doubters, most probably haven't been near an EV never mind having the experience of using one such as you have, or to a lesser degree (still 23,000 miles PA) than I have. Let them stay with their approach to "until a car does 600 miles non stop, I'm not interested". The longer they do that, the longer the incentives will stay for EV users. I have saved an absolute fortune over 3 years in energy costs, maintenance, road tax, not to mention BIK and corporation tax because I switched from ICE to EV. All that and I drive a better, quieter, faster, more prestigious car than I did before and it is and always will be my first choice for a long road trip.

Actually that was excellent review , i do not have an EV (yet) , however i do admire the technology and how you present them. I calculated on average your cost per mile was 11 pence , which is really impressive. My RR Sport Diesel averages 18-20 per mile , based on a simple journey. So would have cost me at least £33 more for the same journey. That makes it very appealing and as you say the Model Y is large enough for family. Well done.

Like the good old days 50 years ago! I had a 1000cc Mini and as I recall I had to stop to fill up on the way up to Edinburgh. Now with my "co-driver" it's a non-stop trip barring a short visit to the loo and a changeover of seats. Surely, this is going backwards presented as progress!! NO! What a lovely car the Tesla seems to be ... a day's driving in a Mini and one felt completely knackered. I guess this really is progress!!

I did Netherlands-Portugal this month in two days, around 1000km per day, with my Tesla Model 3 SR+ and I had to stop more than the car needed because I was tired. Only problem was some old V2 charger in France very crowded and slower than usually (power sharing) due to traveling in a Saturday during summer. I also hear that “my diesel does 1000km on one tank” I always think you should have a giant bladder 😂

This past week, on Tuesday I drove from Cheshire to Inverness via Liverpool, on Wednesday I drove back to Cheshire - 830 mile round trip. On Thursday I drove from Cheshire to Inverness again (via a local stop first this time) , on Friday I drove back to Cheshire - another 830 mile round trip. All this in an Electric Van! Range of the van = 2-2.5 hours at van speeds then I need to stop. 30-40 minute charge stops max.

About 4 years ago I was at Hopwood Services (Brum) next to an elderly gent charging his i3. He told me he was doing his third trip from Cornwall to the Lake District. Impressed I asked him the range of the car. "About the same as my bladder" was his reply. My Ioniq averages 140 miles on a full charge. My bladder can do about 120 miles. We're a good match.

Superchargers are there😊 I’m planning to do it in one go ( two drivers). No stress or anxiety. If someone a year ago told me that I’ll be planning to drive that sort of distance in EV I’ll be booking them psychiatrist visit. And here we are.

Just did a similar journey myself (Southampton to Glasgow), which was my first really long one since swapping X5 for Model Y. With the kids we needed to stop more than the car did, and no more than we would’ve with ICE. As an aside, looks like the protective casing on the rear view mirror is still on, amazing how many people never bother pulling this off.

I’ve covered 50,000 miles in 16 months in a basic model 3 and it can easily cover 260 miles and that’s plenty for the work I do. No one with any sense doesn’t stop for a break after 2 hours and the Tesla can cover twice that with no problem. With more up market Teslas the 300 plus miles is more than sufficient! Keep up the good work!

Good video. Just came back from my summer holiday in Italy. We drove with our Model Y LR from Stockholm / Sweden to Elba and back. 6,000 kilometers in total… and it was no problem at all. Thanks to Tesla route planing and the supercharger network it was so convenient doing these long distances. I will never go back to an ICE car.

Did almost the same journey in June - Edinburgh to Poole in MY LR. Charged 3x but only because the maximum length of time we could hold our bladders was 2-3 hours. Easy peasy!

Totally agree, Richard. The Model Y is a dream to drive and really comes into its own on long journeys. I also agree with @QuestXS - it is the best car I have driven. Did a 546 mile journey a couple of weeks ago. Averaged 226 Wh/mi.

Thanks for this evidential real-time demo of what EV range means in actual use. My senior colleague opted for a top-spec Audi MEB EV, but found the weekend return travel from Manchester to Kent, too much hassle to manage and handed it back for a PHEV... I snagged a lower spec M3LR and have never, ever, had any kind of a range issue in 18 mths. I don't know which battery he went for, but guess it was 58 rather than 77 kWh. So many folk go into EVs with no fore-thought, and expect the impossible because they don't have a clue.

I did notice that you chose Trentham Gardens that have a quick charger. We do need more chargers as they are getting busier. I managed a 2500 mile trip round Europe and they have chargers off the motorway and we need more of these. The safety factor is huge with the cruise.

Wow so many positive comments , It feels sometimes im one of the few Ev owners that will tell the truth 100% of the time when it comes to Ev's Is the range good enough on modern Ev's the truth isn't always just a simple yes or no. It depends on what Ev you own , Like the new MG4 x power , I saw mic from MG Corley do a test the other day in one & he got 100 miles on 50% so a 200 mile range is ok , But it is summer & that would be From 100% to 0% , So lets say you run it to just 10% SOC Range is now only 180 miles in the summer & on your charging stop you only charge to 80% that means realistically your first leg of a long journey in the summer can be 180 miles & your second leg can be 140 miles 80% down to 10%. Or if you run it like a lot say 80% to 20% that gives you a range of 120 miles. Then what happens in the winter as some Ev's can lose up to 30% of there range of course this all depends on how cold it gets & how warm you like the car plus driving conditions. Lets be genourous & say the MG will only lose 15% in the winter of its Range that means the 100% to 10% Range is now down to 150 miles & the 80% to 10% is now down to 110 miles. Its the same story for the jaguar I pace , Audi 55 Etrons & my Bmw i4 M50. These all only really do roughly 200 miles on a 100% charge driving normally. Can you charge it higher to 100% on road trips yes but from my experience it will take just as long if not longer to put in that extra 10% from 80 to a 100% than it will to charge from 10% to 80%. So you see its not such a straight yes or no answer. What no one points out is , Its total difference driving an Ev to a petrol car , Do you need to stops for brakes in a petrol car no , But its better if you do stop. So I get people saying if your driving a petrol car you need to stop anyway for a toilet break & things but what they DONT tell you is the car determines the stops when its electric. Say your driving an Ev & you need the toilet but the services 1m away has no charger but the one 10 miles up the road does , you find you holding it to make it to the services with the chargers. Its like if you have kids & the next services has a M & S a Burger King loads of difference options to eat but no chargers , you will have to decide do you stop there & eat because there are better food options for you & the kids or do you drive to the services with Ev chargers & there is only a KFC there but your kids dont like KFC ? Do you get what I mean driving a petrol car you stop when you want to & you stop , maybe because your tired or maybe because that services sells your favourite coffee. Its your decision but when you own a Ev , You stop at the best charging location either because you know there will be a charger free or they are cheaper than others or the car will be at the ideal SOC to fast charge it. Costs I dont drive a Tesla , Tesla cars are the best for efficiency on motorways at motorway speeds I dont know of any other Ev that will do 4 miles per kwh at 70 mph on a motorway. Also Tesla superchargers for Tesla owners are the cheapest chargers in the Uk. I can tell you my car on recent trip to Glasgow cost me £48.00 more than it cost my brother in his 435d as we went up & back in convoy average speed could have be 75 to 80 mph. So are all Ev cheaper to drive NO. Can you save money driving an Ev yes , can you save time driving a petrol car yes its swings & roundabouts. The trouble with Ev's vs petrols is with a petrol you dont lose 30 miles of range because you turn the heater up to 25c or lose 50 miles of range because its winter. Same for stopping in a petrol you can stop whenever you like & for how long you like if its a stop at a petrol station to grab a coffee & use the toilet 10 mins that's ok , but driving an Ev you stop for how long the car needs not you. I didn't like the way he commented around queues for chargers , it felt like he was calling people liars in a way. It all depends on where you travel to & times of day or days you charge on. But I tell you know 9 out 10 visits ive made to Rugby services ive had to queue , Same at the Stafford ionity chargers & Beaconfield services chargers too. There are queues for chargers at certain places & times. Charging speeds your Tesla charged very fast , But what you didn't mention wait till the winter & try charging your Tesla when the battery is cold as a work colleague found out this past winter. He had been away at his parents for the weekend & they didn't have a charger , He got there on 35% , But after the weekend after his knocking around while he was there he left on just 13% & drove the 2 miles to a supercharger , His car had been standing all night in freezing temps , When he plugged in for the first 10 mins he was getting just 20 to 40 kwh charge speed. His car took 1 hour 32 mins to reach 80% SOC , No one even talks about things like this. I like the way Ev's drive , but we need to be 100% truthful around the pit falls with them & not just tell people the good things. And before someone says you should have bought a Tesla not a bmw , Its a personal choice & I know Tesla are one of the best Ev's , But they are far far away from being the best actual car & they are so common now & all look the same. I love the build quality of the bmw & the interior with the M sports seats & the Ambiant lights , head up display its just a lot nice place to sit & drive.

My Cupra born has done 18000 mile in 1 year took it for first service Battery seemed to me 100% no degradation, indeed garage confirmed this, charged it at supercharger 3 times all home charging! Mainly used daily 60 mile round trip to work. Great car! On the subject of charging EU have announced that all it member states will have to have chargers within 30 miles min from each other

I constantly get asked all kinds of questions like the ones you have answered, instead of just trying to "prove" EV's are the future, ill just show them this video. Its as real as it gets.

I put the route into "A Better Route Planner" and it suggested a 9 min stop at TebaySuper Charger and a 29min stop at HIlton Park Super Charger. I also suggest arriving with only 5% so it looks like you easily beat their efficiency estimates.

Got my Tesla Model Y approx 3 months ago. Absolutely love it. I have hybrid working. My office is 220 miles away. Get there on a single charge with 15-20 % spare and I would not consider myself a conservative driver. The Tesla charging network is awesome, never had a problem.

Having used a non Tesla charger the other day I have to say it was a ball ache, I got less than half the speed and there was others waiting to use the charger. As Tesla owners we are very lucky to have the Supercharger network it makes every journey very easy.

Thanks again for these tests. Also with channels like What car having done petrol vs electric equivalent traveling costs a few times now. They have always come to the conclusion that electric is always a lot dearer for the same journey.

Thats very good efficiency of course. Here in NZ, I have just done a 700km trip and average 147 wh/km in my Model 3 RWD (LFP) and yet our speed limit is only 100 kph (63 mph) which is about the same consumption as your trip at 70 mph! Problem here is most of our roads are course chip and I probably went over more hills than you did (up to about 1000 ft high).

Spot on video. We ‘graze’ in ours, ie, stop when we need to and just plug in for the duration…unless we we go to the Isle of Skye or somewhere where we run out of Tesla chargers. In this case we top right up at Fort William, and then use the odd Charge Place Scotland charger scattered around. Given up trying to convince some people…like talking with a ‘flat-earther’ ; )

Hi Richard, thanks for debunking all the inaccurate stories put around by the nay-sayers. I've been EV since 2017, on my 3rd car (EV6 GT Line S) and in all that time I have never had one issue with range or charging. Great content and looking forward to the next video.

Your first stop at SOT is at Trentham gardens which is at least a 5 mile round trip from the M6 so that's a tad of route plus depending on the time of day getting back to the M6 on the A500 can take some time! Mind you nice place to stop but defiantly not convenient.

Richard, Thank you, that is another fantastic demonstration. I have a Kia E-Niro and it can do 260 miles in a run, I however do not do 260 miles in one go, especially my wife who may not do more than 90 minutes! I have found on my longer journies, that I can charge even at a 50kWh xcharger to about 80% in 40 - 45 minutes, so again enough time to use the facilities and have a drink and a bite to eat. So all of these faster charges that can potentially charge up in 18 mins to 80% is too fast. From where I live, 260 miles gets me a long way and if I can charge at my destination, that is the bonus, as no time lost. I have a potential of 470 miles with a 45 minute stop, maximising the charge speed by stopping at 80%.

I’ve had a Tesla since 2018, and stopping to charge on long journeys. It’s never been a problem for me. I need a rest break toilet break and food breaks more often than the car does! For chargers being full, I’ve only had to wait twice in five years, and both times for less than three minutes.

Great informative vid, cost of that vehicle and monthly costs to compare against a ICE, as you say some people will state certain vehicles could do same journey with less fuel 👍

Did Canterbury to Lake District in one go no charging stops last week, started at 100% arrived Windermere cottage at 7% and plugged in. Driving at 70 (ahem) all the way except the stop starts on M6 and wee stop on M6 toll.

I've now covered my first 5000 miles in my new (to me) 2019 Model 3 SR+. Can honestly say even with that cars 220mile full battery range, I don't think i've yet found myself with range anxiety. Do I have to stop more than a LR version, absolutely, also more than a petrol or diesel car for sure. However I usually stop on a long journey once every 3hrs on average, which would be 180miles give or take and around a 90% to 10% range use in the car. This, with 85k miles on the odometer! The batteries last superbly I think.

Model 3 LR, 21 owner. Recently did a run of 119 miles motorway speeds for a good 110 miles, 203 wh/mi which I though was amazing, nearly 5 miles a kilowatt.

My economical A3 diesel could do that kind of pence per mile….. 10 years ago when I bought it and fuel was 30p/litre cheaper 😂😂 given that total price included a public charger fill up, that really is an incredibly low cost! Yo Bust-a-myth! Back in chilly February I did a 950+ mile round trip in my wife's Model Y LR to the North West of Ireland and back. It was effortless though I will admit when starting out I was apprehensive. The trip started badly when at 4:30am an overturned lorry dumped us off the M6 and we had to try another way to get to Holyhead. While we decided what to do, the car found us a bank of EV Power superchargers at a nearby petrol station (BP I think - disappointing they did not even have a toilet). We charged for about 20 mins and then set off, despite calling Stena line and they assuring us they wait until the last minute, we missed our ferry by just 15 mins and had to wait for the next sailing. Again, the car quickly found another nearby fast charger and although the instructions stayed stoically in Welsh, I eventually figured it out and fast charged at around 50kw for half an hour while we had some breakfast in a nearby cafe before going to the terminal for a sleep. We then travelled across the Irish sea in the early afternoon (ironically the Stena line ferry had free charging on board that we did not know about) and finally after hours more driving got to our destination around 10pm. One day later and it was back the other way. We charged to 90% before we left and stopped on route to Dublin in a beautiful spot named "Enfield" where we Tesla supercharged to just over 80% and headed for the ferry. Once back in blighty we headed South East and debated a stop and Flint Mountain (Tesla) but decided to press on. We could have just about got home without stopping if we were careful - as you say, the CAR could have, but we couldn't so eventually called a halt at Hilton Park Superchargers off the M6 for about 20 mins. Then onto the final leg. This was no more difficult a journey (apart from the M6 closed both ways) than more or less the same one I took in my beloved Jaguar XF ten years earlier. And that car was by any measure a proper Intercontinental GT. Shout out to Stena Line, the ferry was superb as was the food and amazed to discover they have free chargers available on board. It was the first time I used the public charger networks in earnest and was amazed the car knew about not only Tesla chargers, but all sorts of other chargers and their ratings. I have no idea of the cost but we weren't hanging about, and had the heating on etc the whole distance.

Excellent video Richard proving just how cheap EVs are to use. We have the Corsa E which is a fantastic little car and as you say it’s normally the driver that needs to stop before the car….

nice to see a range test conducted by a driver who knows how the electric system works, i am sure I have seen that were possible a great percentage of users charge at home on cheap rate tariffs. If driven sensibly a responsible driver would have 2 stops for toilet, stretch legs if these are just 15 mins breaks its the safe way to travel. As you have access to solar I am surprised you did not say that you would/ could look to arrive home with less than 10% battery, which means the supercharge would not have cost so much. Also if when you had your sleep break you had used a slower charger what kind of money would that have cost and could you get as much in an hour on slower charge as you can in 30 mins on super fast. No electric car for me just yet, but I am trying to learn all i can about the driving of them. great channel with great content

I own a Model 3 SR+ and I don't feel the need for more range. I've driven to Germany, France and Portugal for holidays and it took me the same time, and same driving experience as my previous diesel car. I don't think range is an issue at all with a Tesla. I agree with you Richard.

interesting video for sure. I done 421 miles in the e-Tron 55 Launch Edition with one charge to Colchester but with 3 people and 3 large ish bags!. Pretty good going for the e-Tron 55! 2 stops, 1 of them a 2% to 100% charge with Audi charge card (Eli) was really cheap compared to the same journey in my old 1.6 Audi Diesel, went via the A/M1, stuck to speed limit, we had air con on for some of the time. Couldnt pay me to drive a Model Y again tho, it's a sin to look at, and everyon now has one or an M3, it's the new Ford Fiesta someone told me the other day.

We all know a Tesla can do this!. I would love to see one of these trips but one of the other brands, say ipace as their prices are making them worth a look. Keep up the good work 👏
