Yup. When I was meeting up with a group of EV owners for a cool road trip for desert wild flowers I stopped at a SC to add some range. When I pulled in a tow truck had a Model Y at 90 degrees to parking direction so blocking four or five chargers. Turns out the driver had plenty of range to drop a passenger at the airport and get back home . But that was at EPA rated range. She drove 85 mph up and down hills and ran out of juice less than a mile from the Super Charger. I don't drive like Gjeebs and would have made the whole trip portal to portal without charging at either a SC or level two. Not bragging here just pointing out there are different choices. Personally if I wanted to drive 80mph I likely would have added kWhs at the first charger they passed. From there there is no stress for the rest of the journey. I think having been through Jerome that you could make it back down the hill with more range than when you started up initially. The key is to go up at 10% below the posted speed limit.

The roof rack, 20 inch wheels and the highway speeds over 80mph trash your range. You could have chosen to remove your roof rack, put on those 19’s and kept your speed to a more leisurely 70 mph or less. You would.d have easily made the round trip without the need for supercharging. Also we plan stops with destination chargers installed. Make life easy.

As mentioned with roof rack and wheels having a 20inch diameter being a contributing factor, the Aero Dynamics of the wheel plays a bigger role than most people think. Looks like you have aftermarket rims, with the wheels spinning full time, it is creating drag and a lot of it. I have the 19inch Geminis with aftermarket Aero Hub kit, proving to provide more efficiency than even the Stock Aero Kit. By estimates, another 15mile range over the course of 300miles on avg. Again, this is just adding proper Aero Hub Covers.

316 miles is EPA rated for 65 mph highway driving, so driving at 82 mph you'll be using 26% more energy and at 85 mph, 31% more. Checks out with your real world range: adjusting for 82 mph driving, expected range is 199 miles so 94%->3% is 91% of 199 miles = 181 miles. The tyres and roof rack probably account for the bulk of remaining losses as you mentioned. Great video, fun family trip and real world charging explanation.

@@Gjeebs Ah ok, so then the additional losses from the roof rack are probably more significant, especially at higher speeds. Example scenario where the average speed is still 66 mph and yet the energy expended due to some higher speed accounts for the higher overall range loss (in brackets is the EPA energy rate multiple due to drag increasing with the square of the speed): 70 minutes @ 82 mph (1.59x) 30 minutes @ 76 mph (1.37x) 30 minutes @ 55 mph (0.72x) 30 minutes @ 30 mph (0.21x) Average speed: 66 mph Total EPA Range used: 227 miles Actual distance travelled: 176 miles

Epa driving averages on highway closer to 35
@nettlesoup
@nettlesoup Жыл бұрын
@@lespaulranger hi, 35 what? I checked the official EPA test cycles and it looks like they don't drive at a constant speed. Average speed goes from 21.2 mph for City, A/C and Cold Temp test cycles, to 48.4 mph for the Highway and High Speed test cycles. Then they multiply range by a fudge factor of 0.7 to estimate real-world range. So i don't know why I thought the Tesla range estimates were done using a constant 65 mph. Maybe that's just what makes sense based on real world driving at 65 mph usually achieving Tesla's predicted range on an average summer's day.

Why? The car tells you what to do. Just as had they mapped their trip on their car, they'd have been given a better plan than the ignorant one they put together for themselves. If they wanted their car to save them from their own disinterest in understanding what they were doing, they had to get its advice by asking it what to do. They didn't, and they got burned. Maybe next time they'll read the manual and/or get advice from someone with more experienced. Maybe not. Depends on how smart they are, and whether they learn from their mistakes.

I am someone that has decided to go on a renting challenge through HERTZ. I am a gold member and the manager at my local Hertz told me that he could basically get any variant of model three or model Y that I needed. So after six months, I’ve rented a standard range Tesla model 3, Standard Range Tesla model, Y, Long Range, Tesla model 3 Long Range, Tesla model Y Long Range. I have to say the model 3 Long Range Dual Motor 2022 model was by far my most favorite Tesla. The sheer power of the vehicle combined with 358 miles of range, reduced my range, anxiety by a metric ton. There is absolutely nothing I do not like about this model of Tesla in this configuration. The Tesla model Y long range would be my second pic. The model Y long range had less range than the model three long range. Model Y was also heavier so 0 to 60 times were slightly less. I was able to rent these Tesla’s for anywhere from $38 a day to $52 a day. Considering the amount of gas you do not have to buy it makes it well worth it to rent a Tesla and for that matter buy a Tesla!
@cre8tvedge

If Tesla's upgrade of the Model 3 includes switching to a lift gate in the rear they will sell a _ _ _ _ ton of them. Why? It will improve the efficiency a good 100%. Example, watching a customer load an armchair into the rear of his new Ionic 5. Many people, like myself, will still buy Ys because of the added space. But the 3 might become the fourth best selling vehicle on the planet. More space, crazy good range and less money to own.

One thing people don't realize is that the stated range for EV's are if they are charged to 100%. The recommended charging percentage to preserve maximum battery health is between 40% to 80%. So realistically if you were planning on taking a long trip you are able to charge to 100% at home before you start your trip. Once out on the road you are pretty much stuck to only charging up to 80% anyways because if etiquette or don't want to sit for the last 20% of which the charging slows down. So take into consideration if you buy an EV that the real range is more realistically 20% less than what they state. And in cold climates it will be less also.

Exactly! I think it's false marketing to say these cars have 300 plus miles of range when they advise customers to not use that full range. Also, my MP3 at a 90% charge only shows 232-250 miles (depending on weather. Neither comes close to what Tesla advertises.

Train is also electric. Cool. I went from Heilbronn to Frankfurt in my Rented Model Y dual motor. Total distance was 149KM or about 90 miles. Charge went from 96-38 percent. Under 40 percent you are looking for a charger for sure. Cost will be around 40-50 bucks to charge it back up if you can find a charger. Not the same as in the states. Parking space is a hot commodity and any space has a car in it. Electric or not! Found a Edeka store with 10 stations to charge. Problem there is when the store closes, they put the gates down so you can not get in to charge or you will be trapped in if charging when they close. There is a Tesla dealer in town and they have the exact Tesla Y with a posted range of 433km? That has to be a in the city range. Like I said, we went 90 miles on a 96 percent charge and anyone in their right mind with 38 percent showing will start looking for a charge station. Ridiculous to say the least. These EV;s are nowhere near useful except in town for commuting. A 75k commuter car. Wow!! Love the power!!

You used about 54 kWh and 91% of your battery. If I am doing the math right your battery is showing 59-60 kWh usable when full? That can't be right since your battery new should be about 78-79 kWh usable. That's huge degradation.. interested to see a battery test. Thoughts on this?

Currently In Colorado typing this. Drove our 2022 model Y long range 20 inch wheels from Tampa Florida to Denver Colorado. Roughly 1900 miles each way. We custom ordered this vehicle. Also got the fsd subscription for this trip and I think it’s pretty useless. The regular cruise control is more then good enough and for future road trips I probably won’t be subscribing as it’s not needed. I have my settings set to sport and aggressive acceleration. I’ll charge 5-10 percent over if I plan on being under 80 mph or less on the freeway. During our sprint through Kansas it was dead and empty and I had active cruise set to 85mph as that’s the max and charged 10 percent over recommended amount at the very least. When I say recommended amount I mean when you get the notification that says you have enough battery to get to the next destination I’ll go 10 percent over whatever percentage where at. By doing this I arrive with usually 10-20 percent. I think lowest was 9 percent. My vehicle is blacked out. Black rims, black paint, side windows are 25 percent tint, front windshield is 30 percent tint I have a roof cover that keeps sunlight from beaming through the glass roof. I put this cover up during road trips and whenever summer hits in Florida. Summers in Florida gets HOT. Doing a lot of mountain driving in Colorado and iv been charging as much as I can. Unfortunately my wife’s family doesn’t have a fast charger so iv been using the super charger here to charge up to 80 percent and then charging over night with the 12 volt charger (usually get 60 miles overnight only) so I’m never able to get a full battery. That being said. Cara been great. Love it don’t regret bringing this over a gas car. Requires a bit more planning for example tomorrow we are doing 150 miles through some mountain so I charged up to 270 miles at the super charger and now will let the remaining amount charge over night so in the morning I have a full battery to work with. This is new territory so I’m playing it safe and over charging imo. Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it. Took our Mercedes’ suv to Michigan from Tampa and that ran me 600 dollars in gas one way? That was a few years back so don’t quote me but it was some stupid number. But the reason I’m saying this is because from Florida to Colorado which is a thousand miles more then florida to Detroit. It only cost me 200 bucks. 😆. Love how cheap and relaxing this trip was. Sorry for the long message!

The same things that affect the range in an EV also affect the mileage on a ICE car, and vice-versa. However, when you need to refill an ICE car, it takes 5/10 minutes, you can fill it completely and have another full tank of range. EVs, according to the recommendations, you should let it go to 10-20% and charge it to 80%, which gives you less range than the maximum.

@@caingalata4132 That's not true at all. ICE engines are around 20-30% efficient at best , while electric motors are above 90%. The battery and the weight are the limiting factors , not efficiency.

Mpg ratings are out of date and so thus as are EV ratings since they calculate off of mpg. Mpg ratings are based off of 55 miles per hour of which was the average speed limit decades ago. Now the average speed limits are between 65-70. So in reality 55 no longer applies as you are not able to drive that much slower than the speed limit without getting ticketed or causing road rage. Highway mpg ratings need to be adjusted using 65 mph.

lol. Of course it's bad range. The technology along with the affordability isn't anywhere near a decent gas milage automobile. Let's use the Tesla model 3 LR which is there cheapest long range go getter. This car costs brand new with basically no options about 49,000 dollars. In Arizona out the door price would be about 53,000. Let's compare that to a nissan versa sr. Yes, a nissan versa sr is not the car a Tesla 3 is with all the bells and whistles but this video and conversation is about range, as pretty much the vast majority of them are on youtube. A fully loaded versa sr which is no slouch when it comes to bells and whistles in and of itself goes for about 23,000. Out the door pricing in Arizona would put it at about 25,000. That's a difference of 28,000 dollars. How much gas can you purchase for 28,000 dollars?! Better yet, what can somebody do with an extra 28,000 thousand dollars?! But I digress, driving 15,000 miles in a year NOT using a supercharger would cost about 450 in electricity for the model 3 LR. It would cost about 1,950 to fuel up the versa at 5.00 a gallon. That's a difference of 1,500 dollars. 1,500 X 10 years is 15,000. So in 10 years when both cars have 150,000 miles on them somebody driving an ICE would still have almost 10 years to go before they were at the break even price of the Tesla. But this isn't exactly true, in reality, the insurance and the registration on a Tesla will be much more expensive then the versa for the life of the car year in and year out. This cost will be about half the amount, thousands of dollars. Financing the car? It will be about half the amount again (thousands of dollars). But what about the dreaded maintenance cost of an ICE? It's expected that a versa owner will spend about 5,500 dollars in 10 years on maintenance. The model 3? About 3,500. So that's a 2,000 dollar difference over 10 years. Then there's this, if you were to put 28,000 in a simple interest bearing account and only got back 3% after 10 years you would have about 9,500 dollars. In 20 years? 22,500, that's compound interest at work and it's almost the entire price of the nissan versa you paid for 20 years ago. Let's discuss range, the versa's fuel capacity is 11 gallons, fill up the tank and you can hop right in the car without putting some stupid aero caps on or worrying about the roof racks and drive at a constant speed with serious elevation gains and 20 mph winds at 70 mph for about 375 miles. Light wind and mild elevation gains? About 425 miles. About to run out of fuel? You don't need to plan were your next charging station is just jump off at the next exit, fill up in about 15 minutes, stretch your legs, get something to drink in the store if you wish and you are right back on your way. Try that with a Tesla. From 0-100% at a supercharger takes over an hour and it ain't free. It'll cost you 20-25 bucks to add just 250 miles of range of course for the 3 LR it will be even more than that. So now on your trips across the U.S. that don't take you back home like here, the price to charge your tesla just went up dramatically. You just added to the cost of ownership. And let's not forget that using a supercharger in the first place is hard on your battery and is not recommend with any frequency. Then there's battery degradation which needs to be factored in. When these cars or any electric cars come close to mimicking what something very affordable and much smarter to own such as the versa then we will have something.

AC at full blast and high speed driving around 70 to 80 gonna reduce your range by like 50 or 70 miles.. I got a model 3 long range.. and with a speed of 60mph and AC either off or at 1 speed I can get 351 mile range out of the 358 I’m sure it could do more then 358 if I don’t use Santry mode.. I have on in public places..

I get the range issue, I have a 3 & a Y, I find in the summer with AC and my led foot I get less mileage. Testing this at 60 MPH I get very close to advertised. In winter it is worse as we should not drive without heat. But I love Tesla so much that this is not an issue for me as I leave home fully charged every morning with no worries at all. I have never seen a gas station in years and don't know what gas costs today. Road trips will require planning, but this will improve over time as the EV way of life matures.

Terrible range in both gas and electric cars can be caused by driving over 75 and having larger tires mostly an electric car a larger tires makes things a lot worse larger tires use more energy and they are also less comfortable, in a Tesla or really any electric car for that matter you get the smaller wheel option and you drive around 75 normally and it will be excellent.
