Couldn't agree more. I'm an Industrial designer and (imo), the XC40 is the most successful car (aesthetically speaking) in recent years. Really well proportioned and balanced. Also the reason the Volvo design director became CEO of Polestar

and it's funny that it is called "real world" range. I drive a Tesla Model S and am considering the XC40 when available. I love our volvo seats, fit and finish as well as the uber professional and friendly service staff that I actually can talk to on the phone. Plus, the volvo will still have the FULL tax break in the U.S. and back to my point.. In the real world. most of the charging is done overnight.. the ONLY time that you would need a fast charge is on a longer road trip. In that case, the actual charging speed is determined by many things at Tesla.. finding a 250kw charger that isn't being shared by another car is a rarity.. sure, it may charge faster, but I doubt very much that it charges 2 times as fast. and my guess is that Volvo holds back battery at the top end, so it doesn't get overcharge, so that 230 mile range is enough.. it's better to charge less and stop more anyway

@@Chrisb8s Took the words right out of my mouth. There are no seats like Volvo seats. They are designed with advice of Orthopedic Surgeons. I know that Model X seats are atrocious for a long drive. .... And I have a service agent assigned to me at my Volvo dealership. His name is Dwight, and he always returns my calls within the hour to answer my questions, or to set up appointments. Tesla's not even in Volvo's league in service. I'll be looking to buy the III Gen BEV XC90 in a couple of years because of my dealership, and because of Volvo's superlative seats. And other things as well.

As an owner of both Tesla and Volvo cars at the moment, I can say the reviewer doesn't know much about them. For example, he doesn't know that Volvo intentionally limits max speed to 112mph for safety reasons, it has nothing to do with performance. XC40 is also a smaller car by design, there's nothing wrong with that. Model Y is about the size of XC60. Saying that a larger car is better in comparison is poor judgement. I bet he doesn't think Hammer EV is better than Model Y, even though Hammer is much bigger :) Nor he mentions that Tesla's autopilot costs almost 10 times more than Volvo's, and Tesla still lacks features like surround view, heated steering wheel, etc.

@@rebeccatmoore_YT Here's my problem with Volvo and the XC40. It's a hybrid platform. The Model Y is ground up EV. I don't like Tesla's culture and I think their cars are only average in terms of quality and build. I don't like their office cubicle like interiors either (3 and Y). I wouldn't buy one. I like Volvos. But, Volvo is very slow in getting out a dedicated platform EV to their customers. The XC40 Recharge is much smaller inside than the Tesla Model Y. The XC60 is actually closer in size to the Model Y. The Model Y has excellent space efficiency. Yes, build quality of Volvos is excellent (though quality control can be spotty at times). But Volvo doesn't build a truly modern EV yet and the Polestar 2, basically the sedan version of the XC40 with a different name on it (and different dash and door panels), has the same issue. Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 or VW ID.4 are more modern alternatives. And their range figures show it. The XC40 Recharge is remarkable for its platform. But the platform and body and aerodynamics is the problem with it.

They're doing an amazing job. I'm in the middle of reading the Elon Musk book - what a guy! In future reviews I would be interested in comparisons of seats, safety, fit and finish and owner satisfaction. These are areas I think Volvo could earn some well deserved points on. I'm just sick of these journalists everytime a new EV comes out "OMG TESLA RIVAL" (I don't mean this video I don't mind the comparison, rather the titles of most of the articles and videos everytime a car is even announced). Tesla is trying to sell cars (obviously) but their stated goal is also to increase EV adoption, whether its their or not. Tesla just tells you to put hands on but with no enforcement if you don’t. Volvo calls it pilot ASSIST, not AUTO pilot. They are both L3 auto driving, but Tesla just named it in a way people are tricked to think it is more advanced. It is the same technology, while Volvo is just more conservative. Here in Minnesota even roads are on construction entire warm part of the year, still most of them have terrible potholes. Low profile tires in Tesla blow easily and the rims gets damaged simultaneously in those potholes. Dues to brake design there is no way to get rid of low profile tires and rims on Tesla. This is a deal breaker in favor of proper high profile tires design and better ground clearance especially for winter in Volvo. And we have to take in consideration Volvo is designed and tested for the Swedish winter. Tesla has frameless glass in the doors. That design quickly worsens insulation of the car and allows wind blowing inside in just the second winter. Plus Tesla has no proper sound insulation sounding in the winter like an empty tin kicked on the pavement. Even whole cargo volume and space is larger in Tesla, due to its sloped design it lacks practicality found in boxy square Volvo. Flat roof easily allows roof rack installation on Volvo while bubbly glass on the Tesla roof easily cracks even when a proper designed roof rack specific for model Y is installed and used due to misalignment of entire shape of the car. This is easily to notice by looking at misalignment of panel gaps. Door handles in Tesla freeze in the winter and cannot be opened. Even in warmer climates those handles need replacement each 1.5 years. It is unheard about door handle replacement in Volvo. In northern climates Tesla brakes disintegrate in one salty winter as here in Northern USA as in Norway requiring aftermarket Bosch replacement. Considering how long one has to struggle with lacking customer service of Tesla to fix issues especially on warranty, it is understandable some customers might search elsewhere for an EV outside Tesla. Conclusion: there are 2 kind of EV customers - one group interested in EVs as technology, performance and they will by a Tesla like an iPhone as a gadget no matter what. The second group are still traditional customers interested in an EV like a car as an asset second in price and expences after the home. This people appreciate the car comfort and as a nice place to be inside of it. Those might prefer a EV from Volvo, Jaguar,

All great points. We're cross shopping both vehicles and while the Google OS is very compelling since our entire ecosystem is Google, it's unproven so wasn't much of a factor. So funny enough, after all the considerations you pointed out, our final deciding factor was (drum roll....) rear cross traffic alerts. It literally saved a child's life because we didn't see him coming by just looking at the rear camera...the sensors alerted us and auto-braked the car, which would have otherwise run him over. Now we won't buy a car without this feature... and the fact that Tesla, a literal computer on wheels, doesn't have it, is surprising to me, and the reason we decided not to get a Y. I'm sure one day they'll implement it but as someone who works in software I can testify that Rule #1 is "never buy a product with the promise of a future feature/update". You always gotta buy based on what it has when you buy it. And I really like Tesla, but right now only the XC40 has it 🤷‍♂️

Thanks. This is really interesting. While as an oath sworn Tesla-nerd my knee jerk thought is why would anyone even bother to make any car that isn't a Tesla? This is of course a limited way of thinking. Based on your video I can see where an intelligent person might choose the Volvo. They like it's style, it feels more comfortable to them, and mostly they are going to use it to drive to work, within two hundred miles on most weekends. A 'trip' to them is getting on a plane. They'll charge it at home every night, 4 miles or 8 miles per hour of charge won't be an issue and they don't have a heavy foot. (I'll be ordering a Y as soon as I'm sure that after Battery Day the new ones won't have 800 mile range and fly. But even I have zero interest in driving 115 mph. Well maybe once, but even then, nah, no point. Growing up in the 1960s everybody's mom had a large V-8; when the light turned green it was rockets all the way! to the speed limit.) So all those better Tesla specs won't be deal breakers for people who prefer the Volvo. In college I could always explain, endlessly, why my Volkswagen was the ideal car. I'm sure I convinced a lot of people to buy Lincolns. This raises another issue with Tesla. There are really not much variation in the models, colors, wheels etc... That alone might make the Volvo more attractive.

For warranty you stated Tesla has 8 yr/ 120k mi (70%SOC). I think that should be 70% SOH (State of Health) as opposed to SOC (State of Charge). I think the battery is supposed to maintain 70% of original "capacity" for which SOH would be a better metric. SOC will vary somewhere between 100% and 0% every time the vehicle is driven. It's more of a "Gas Gauge" if you will. From Tesla's web site: "...8 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first, with minimum 70% retention of Battery capacity over the warranty period..."

"Car and Driver" just reported a fall in battery capacity in their Tesla Model 3 of 7% in 24,000 miles. Not insignificant! It was plugged in 842 times with 500 times from super chargers. It appears that Teslas don't do very well doing a lot of highway miles with super chargers. If I was doing a lot of long road trips, I'd go for the XC40 PHEV over any BEV. .... The XC40 P8 range and charging speed for daily driving is more than sufficient.

Tesla is definitely the winner from the tech side, but when it comes to the quality of the car itself including the interior and Volvo service stations the Volvo is clearly the winner. I am a huge Tesla fan but when European car brands like Volvo or Audi reach the same range than a Tesla, they will possibly overtake Tesla..

We sold our '19 XC-40 and bought a Y performance/performance in May 2020. The EV version of the XC-40 looks identical to the gas XC including the interior. The MY screen and interface is much much better IMO, than the Volvo. After almost 2 years it was still awkward to use for us. I'm a slow learner but the system is intuitive and easy to set up and it accepts voice commands. Build quality is not an issue on our particular Y, ours is straight and I saw no obvious issues with any of the other Tesla's at the "dealer". It seems like "build quality" is only an issue with a vocal minority (youtubers). We do here some rattles from time to time in the interior but considering the only noise produced is from tires, air movement and the whir of the motors, rattles like that probably aren't noticed on most gas cars. I'm sure the EV version of the XC-40 will be more exciting to drive than the boring gas version. The gas Volvo was a very nice car but no more exciting than a less expensive Japanese or Korean compact SUV. I'm looking forward to driving a EV XC-40 in the future but for now my wife and I will continue to fight over who gets to drive the Y.

This comparison feels REALLY BIASED! 1. selection of tesla tech and features where some are missing or optional in the volvo. Certainly there are features of volvo not existing in the tesla. But these were not selected as metrics. 2. Volvo don't listen to their customers? 3. What about interior design. The screen in Tesla looks like somebody just glued a regular computer monitor to the dashboard. 4. Build quality not a category. 5. Handling not a category 6. Safety not a category 7. Enironmental aspects not a category 8. Riding comfort not a category 9. Depreciation comparing with Volvos entire fleet consisting of mostly ICE???
@XLoaferY
@XLoaferY 3 жыл бұрын
Biased review. here are my main complaints; Tesla doesn't HAVE proper options. So you can't even add things you want OR avoid paying for things you do not want. Choosing a handful of features that the tesla has and avoiding the ones it does not (like heated steeringwheel and a proper instrument cluster). Having a massive touch screen for every feature (like wiper speed) is a direct security risk and stupid design. The tesla can only be prepared for tow capacity, not be equipped with a tow hook/ball. Measuring top speed in a country without autobahn "free speed" is just silly. You're not allowed to go 155 mph anywhere, why would that be a selling point? Why would you pick and choose if you compare to LR or performance? You pick the LR for efficiency, but the performance for the performance part. Cargo space; the Volvo has a much much better SHAPED cargo space (because of the boxy shape). Cool part to add the charging network in a comparison of 2 cars. That makes absolutely no sense as a datapoint. My main issue is you avoid ALL categories where tesla are rock bottom: buildquality, fit and finish, paint, customer service). As for the resell value it's really really really unfair to compare volvo as a brand (having only ICE or hybrids until this model) to an EV only manufacturer. If you look at lease prices, it's clear that resell value/depreciation is much much lower for the p8 than for all other Volvos. It's going to be pretty hard to sell model y with no bumper and a frequently detatching roof... Add to that the stupid design of the trunk (metal all the way) and you have a car that is likely to require you visit a shop at the slightest hint of a fender bender. When a tesla breaks, it falls apart. Bound to do a lot to resell value. The trunk doesn't have hands free option on the tesla (hey look, another feature the Tesla doesn't have). The sensors on the trunk are ALSO faulty on the Tesla. "Fit and Finish" affects features (who wants faulty features), cargo (hey look, the trunk chopped my kids arm off), Warranty (because surprise, not every known tesla fault is covered) and Resale value (good luck selling a tesla with misaligned panels, broken trunk, no bumpers and a missing roof).

Um the XC40 is a subcompact whereas the Model Y is definitely not dubbed a subcompact. When BMW X1 and GLA are available as pure electric, do the XC40 justice and compare it to right subsets. Off the bat, the comparison is flawed and irritating. Tesla is the initial leader in EV innovation, great range and fast charging. Other than that, it’s simply overrated and a bit of a bore. Honda-e is so far behind and not exactly in the same category, but even with it’s small footprint is something to look forward than the outdated Tesla. To each his own I suppose. 🤷‍♀️

There is no such thing as an EV without a charging network. EV's (including Teslas) would not sell without the most pervasive charging network, which is the electricity grid. That's how most charging is done - at home. Beyond that, there are charging stations - yes Tesla has their own dedicated network of charging stations but it's not the only network out there - there are multiple networks available to Tesla and non-Tesla EV's. If your EV is primarily to be used as a city car then you will rarely need to charge outside of home. If you travel longer distances then you can use apps to locate the nearest charger to your location. It's not that hard. I wouldn't discount the Volvo just because it isn't a Tesla.

I can not agree with the "quality" issues on TESLA. Having 2 Volvos (XC60, V2) in the past I can tell that even there are nice looking and safe cars the service costs are extremly high. My TESLA modX100d is now having 120Kkm only whipers and the CCS - Uprgrade which I did was accounting as cost. I have free SC and the OTA make higher charging speeds possible. 40 min to 30 min. I was a once a Volvo fan but now I trust on TESLA. Anyhow its positive to see Volvo turning electric but I would go along with the clear market leader. Another thing is that TESLA is making real money on their cars.... I doubt that VW, Audi and Volvo are profitable on their EV´s

You forgot one other advantage for Tesla. No Dealer. I have a 2019 XC90 and a 2019 Tesla Model 3. As with most dealers, I had to meet with the Volvo finance manager to sign the stack of paperwork. He said "I know this is your first Volvo, so you probably don't know that our brakes suck....you should buy this special brake warranty from me". Direct quote. WTF....telling me the brakes suck on my brand new $60K+ car? The same guy has called me at least 3 times since the purchase trying to sell me insurance. The delivery process took well over an hour. For the Mod 3, I paid advance on line. The delivery process took about 5 minutes....3 signatures (1 for Tesla, 2 for Colorado), help syncing my phone with the car (so it could function as the key) and then told me I could drive off whenever I was ready. Done. It will be difficult for me to consider any other car in the future where I had to interact with a dealer. The XC90's lease is up in 13 months and it will turn not a Model Y at that time.

Also you focussed on charging just in America, I live in UK and am considering both vehicles. Lastly the xc60 is the direct competitor to model Y which will be released in 2021 I think, so space, storage etc would be a better comparison.
