With out Elon, Tesla would have most likely failed. Elon has a right to take credit. Tesla is going in his vision and will continue so. These guys had the right idea but did not have the ambition and know how to get Tesla to where it needs to go. Elon was the only guy who could have done it. I could see the pain in the founders eyes. But they too know Elon and Tesla were meant for each other.

This was filmed in 2019, so we don’t know if they held their shares all the time since or not. If I were them I’d have sold some of my shares, if not all my shares, by now. At some point you’ve got to start locking in your profits, so that they’re not all just on paper.

Seriously, how can you take what's yours already? Tesla wouldn't have existed without Musk's money. It was just a business plan. So what. Truth is, they failed. Not one solid dollar in real revenue came in the door before Musk replaced these guys and took over. See, there's this Silicon Valley culture that says that if you raise venture capital and are featured in TechCrunch, you're successful. You get paid, futz around, maybe sell the intellectual property, then move on. Revenue is true success, not fundraising. Filing the paperwork with your name on it and conducting experiments is different from bringing a compelling product to market and surviving long enough to turn a profit. Musk is the true CEO. Until he took over, Tesla Motors was just an expensive science project.

That's corporate politics. But it kinda doesn't matter, he still has his shares. On one hand, I think he fully deserves credit as the true Founder, but on the other hand, I think from marketing perspective Elon is better to become the face of Tesla. I think it's similar to how Sundar Pichai became the face of Google while Larry Page laughs all the way to the bank.

In Tesla case, I think Elon's genius isn't really needed, as they already have visionary founders from the start, they only needed Elon's money. It's arguable whether Tesla won't be as successful without Elon's leadership, but I don't think that what matters the most. Of course, Elon could've started his own electric car company, but that's reinventing the wheel and doesn't add a new innovation unlike SpaceX. In the case of SpaceX, it was Elon's vision and execution from the start, so I'll give him full credit for it.

@@clarkvaughan Building prototype cars and manufacturing cars at a large scale are two very different things; one is a design skill and the other is manufacturing process skill. Martin and Marc were the design guys (battery wise) and Lotus build the 'car around it'. Elon on the other hand brings money in. Elon is neither the design nor process guys (that's why he's going through production hell), he also had no experience in automotive industry. What he's really good at is marketing, hyping and generating sales. Somehow along the way, drama ensued and the battery design guys got voted off the island. Regardless of what the reason is, now everyone associates Tesla with Elon, calls him a genius for 'inventing' Tesla and Elon never once corrects them or give credit to Martin and Marc in any public engagements. Whatever the problem was, there was definitely a better way than going behind Martin's back and influencing the board members to fire him. With the lawsuit settled, we will never know exactly what happen; was it 100% betrayal or a tough decision to save the company or maybe a bit of both. For me, the moment Elon let the world believe he was the engineer who draw the first drawing of Tesla, is the moment I truly dislike him. Now he is not only taking credits from others, but he is fully manipulating the market and profiting from it. As Martin said "His Elon-ness has increased over the years". And his cult-like fanbase only adds fuel to the flame. There is no such thing as one true genius. Even Tesla was a collaborative effort from hundreds of people. Martin and Marc also only build the battery technology. Other parts of the car (transmission, electronics, software etc.) comes from other engineers with years of experience in their respective field.

Do you think Peter Thiel could do the same things like Elon did? For me, those guys did start Tesla company with good idea but their outcome is not at prototype level, just a concept with some testing. It's far far from manufacturing. There is no plan to start manufacturing at all. Elon's money and effort may contribute more than what those guys did for the 1st prototype. That's why he can be a Co-founder in media. If those guys were excellent and able to make Tesla big, why didn't they start another one or contribute to a Tesla competitor like Lucid Air with old Tesla staffs. I bet they couldn't. In many tech companies, co-founders normally contribute the most effort and innovation which grow company. They are real founders. I don't see those guys did well like that.

BS. Alot of people are willing to take on risks😀 The key is the management of risk/reward ratios. On other hand, the key success feature of Musk is the ability to persuade and manipulate people on small and large scale. Remember - superficial explanations never really suit complex issues. 😀

Here are some other things Eberhard and Tarpenning didn't mention: * That they in turn are denying Gage and Cocconi credit (the people who actually built the powertrain that they wanted to put in a Lotus * That when Gage and Cocconi directed Musk to them, he was already working on starting an EV company with the exact same business plan as Eberhard and Tarpenning (though he was pursuing using a Noble as the chassis - same powertrain, though) * That when Musk was introduced to them, they had basically a shell of a company with no tech of its own and didn't even have the trademark rights to their own name. They were hardly any further along than Musk was. * That the reason Elon was only the fourth CEO was that despite repeated attempts by others to get him to take the role, he kept refusing, because he was busy with SpaceX * That Eberhard was kicked out of the CEO role not by Elon, but by a unanimous decision of the board, including a person he personally appointed, for repeatedly lying and hiding information about the company's dire straits - dire straits that he led the company into. * That Eberhard was literally quoted as saying that if anyone finds out about [what was going on], he'd be fired. (He was) * That the board wanted to sue Eberhard due to how much he had screwed them over, but decided not to because it would be bad PR. * That despite Eberhard - like Musk - being independently wealthy, he put little of his own money into the company; Musk shouldered the risk. Yet Tesla wouldn't be where they are today without their 'Nightmare' Tesla would be freaking bankrupt and these 2 founders would be working at McDonald's

Martin calls himself a founding member of the Mars society because he was one of the early birds (14th member). What stops Elon from being a co-founder when he joined an empty company less than a year after it's creation?

There was a legal settlement that typically involves the damaged party getting paid some settlement amount and in turn signs away any right to discuss the settlement and say anything about the defendant. That's not respect, that's disdain and disgust.

In an interview last year Elon stated that Martin Eberhard was the most difficult individual he has ever dealt with in business. This statement would lead one to conclude that this lack of communication and chemistry was instrumental in Eberhard being replaced by Elon as Tesla CEO.

@@jamesblanton9785 Eberhard was replaced because the board voted unanimously to kick him out - including a member that Eberhard himself appointed - after it came out that he was hiding information from the board about how all of his numbers turned out to be wrong and he'd gotten the company tangled into expensive agreements that depended on a date that there was no chance they'd meet, even though he was telling everyone they'd meet it. The car literally cost over double what he was telling them it was costing.
