Great to have you back - I have missed seeing your videos. Nice counter - I have it's much larger cousin, the 5350B that goes to 20 GHz and uses the same harmonic heterodyne principle. It is also full of HP engineering goodness! Looking forward to more videos from you.

Thanks, David - Appreciate it - I was just mentioning to someone a few days ago that I have a 5343A, 5351A, and a 53131A - I guess one can't have too many counters - I just acquired an 8920B that I'd like to show running so that should happen soon - I got the networking replacement here at home all done and now it is bench cleaning time :)

@@tgsoapbox Excellent. Looking forward to the 8920B video. I got an 8924C not too long ago and need bench space, too! Haha.

It may be a good idea to go to a Planar Crown connector rather than the APC-3.5 one. It is an extremely robust- and rather underappreciated- connector interface which is linear to 40GHz. It was developed at the behest of Tektronix in an effort to reduce the instances of panel connnector breakage on their high-end microwave test gear. The electrical interface on the male instrument side is flat and is keyed to prevent rotation of the interface during mating. The female connector locks positively to this interface and requires no torque tools.

Thanks - This was just a test video to try out single upload/multiple site publishing but I really appreciate the comment - Never heard of the connector before but taking a quick look at Wikipedia it seems like it is similar to an APC-7 connector but with higher frequency specs. Thanks again.

Thanks mate - Appreciate it - Just picked up an 8920B that really drove me to start the 'clear up the bench project' - COVID & partial retirement really didn't do my waistline, liver or bench any good :) Aiming to clear the bench by end of week and then do a "8920B Overview" video next week. Happy though that I can live the life vicariously through your DSA repairs...

Thanks Barry - Appreciate your comment - My goal is to get a video out next week on an 8920B and then a few more bits that I've picked up. Be somewhat annoyed that my bench, storage room & rack are a complete shambles and yet they've been some great auctions :( - As I've said to everyone, I really appreciate you guys hanging around even with the lack of content.

Hi Tony - great to see you back with more HP videos. I’ll be very interested to see the HP 5343A/8350B sweep control video when it arrives - I want to set that up myself but have not tried it yet. Also was wondering if you plan to get an HP 5344A to go with the counter? It’s a neat box that sits aside the 5343 and together create a PLL to lock the 8350B very accurately to a single frequency (or sweep over a limited range).

Thanks - APpreciate the comment - I have an 83592A that is basically in parts that I want to try assembling and see how it goes - I'll have to look back at the loop setup to see if I have the bits for that - I don't have a 5344A but now you've piqued my interest you never now what can happen - Thanks again for hanging onto the channel for so long - Appreciate it
@ZoopDragon
@ZoopDragon 2 жыл бұрын
@@tgsoapbox good luck reassembling the 83592A. Will that come out as a video? I recently replaced the YIG in a 83592C and the mechanical complexity of the plugins is almost as high as the electronic complexity. I seriously though I’d never get it working again. As it turned out I found and replaced a damaged LM319 5V regulator during reassembly and so when I got it working I was never quite sure whether the YIG was dead or is was the 5V supply to the YIG output amplifier FET. Ho hum - it works now!

The most common problem I see in HP5343A and HP5342A is that there is a small resistor next to the fan, which usually burns to carbon. Adding to this, there are no schematic diagrams that I know of which shows the circuity of the mainboard.
@tgsoapbox
@tgsoapbox 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment - Artek Manuals has a scan that includes all the schematics for the counter (if you're looking for it) - Does that resistor take down the board?
@dgaborus
@dgaborus 2 жыл бұрын
@@tgsoapbox Thanks. If that resistor goes bad, the auxiliary transformer does not have power. If it has no power, the oscillator module does not work. If that does not work, the CPU board cannot derive the clock source if the instrument is set to internal clock mode.

I just purchased one of these off eBay a few days ago (waiting for it to arrive), and bizarrely enough it's also missing the knob for the gate speed control. I bought it for a possible repair project as it was shown powered on and sold as "powered on only, no further testing was done" so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there is nothing wrong with it.

Good luck - Often these units will have the counter part working fine but the high freq input will be blown (the components are pretty much unobtainum but I think someone in the HPAK group did post stuff on repairing them). So you can use it for low frequency counting but not the higher end stuff.
