The fingertip fiskar knife is a favourite in the leatherworking community too. The disc cutter is also useful

I’ve been cutting paper... well everything as a designer turned artist for almost 50 years. The blade is a consumable and must be optimum at all times. I tend to use Olfa knives as my go to studio knives because it’s so simple to snap a new blade. I can also use the flex to cut beveled edges. In the 70’s art college, if you studied design, taught you how to use simple tools to do the most complex jobs.

For small detail scissors, I like the cutterbee ones because they’ve got Teflon coated blades, which are AMAZING for cutting through sticky stuff (like anything adhesive-backed, sticker sheets etc.) because the goo doesn’t build up/stick to the blades. You can also get them in a pack with the tweezerbee tweezers that have a similar shape to the sizzix one shown here, but close when released (like the Fisk are one). Best of both worlds IMO

Wow. I enjoyed K’s perspective here, but our Venn cutting diagrams barely overlap. As an old printer who started cutting sheet material on light tables before plastic cutting mats, a half-century back, I’d say Fiskars? No, Olfa and Grifhold. I do also use X-Acto #2s unaltered (22 & 23), and #1s (11) with reshaped blades for specific jobs. But the Olfa Silver snap blade cutter is my go-to, with special AB blades, or the improved holder design by NT (I keep one of those in my jacket pocket). The small Grifhold etchers get a lot of use too.

Another printer here. I have my Olfa knives but, those Fiskars finger knives look pretty sweet for crafting. The big one is also way more ergonomic than my Olfa's.

Camino Silhouette pick-me-up tool is one of my favorite scrapbook tools. Love it for the tiny cut outs.

Great reviews, thankyou! The Fiskars Crafts Heavy-Duty Easy Change Detail Knife is good in my experience because you can hold it like a pen for detail work, or have the bulbous part of the handle snug in the palm of your hand for a solid grip with your thumb sitting naturally in the grey indentation. Best of all, you can remove the blade and flip it over so that the handle is an ergonomic and safe grip for left-handed people.

Great reviews, thankyou! It gave me a lot of blade type inspiration. Love those alterative palm and fingers designs. I know what i will get fot my B-day NO MORE pained fingers. As for my tips to you: I love dentist picks to get rid of discards in template and am a fan of regringding dull blades.

I do quite a bit of papercrafting and love to use a x-actos for the finer details, but also use a pair of spare kitchen shears for blocking in the major shapes of the model!

Great episode! Thanks! So you don't tear something with a dull blade... If you slide a blade on your fingernail sideways and it doesn't catch, the blade is dull. If it catches, it is sharp. Can't remember where I learned that but it's really handy. BTW, for utility blades, get the Stanley Carbide ones. THEY ARE AWESOME. Dewalt also makes carbide blades but I've found that they are only OK.

The first pair of “toothed” tweezers are tissue forceps used for surgery and dissection. Another great source for precision cutting and delicate handling tools!

I would love to see more of the tools and materials that’s used to create clothing, sculptures, furniture, armour, or even electronics for digital storage, other tools, books, props, crafts, suits, headgear, and any art, for archival purposes (museum quality), but I don’t know if you do that as much. I mean you are all very experienced makers and I was wondering about your creations that you or others want to make last. I also love how you jump from project to project. Keep it up, I’m inspired by the creativity.

I've used a traditional xacto handle for years. I always had trouble with the blades loosening as I worked. My new handle has the blade tightening mechanism at the end of the handle instead of where I grip it. It has been so much nicer. I highly recommend changing over.

I'm a big proponent of stropping your blades, new or as you use them. It gives a little polish to the edge and eliminates any wire edge that may remain from the factory sharpening. Also strops are easy to make, leather or no leather.

I use a relatively smooth diamond steel to re-sharpen my scalpel blades. It works really well for flat-edged blades. I rarely have to buy new ones.

I had hoped you would include scoring tools and burnishing tools. I also find myself using CA glue, and not just PVA glue when I do card modeling. A good straight edge or non-straight cutting edge comes in handy, as well as a cutting mat, which you used, but didn't discuss. Thank you for the video. I'd love to see more of you doing some of your own projects, either here on Tested, or on your own channel, if you have one.

PVA stands for either Poly Vinyl Acetate or Poly Vinyl Alcohol. Acetate being the more prevalent version. PVA is in fact just plain white glue, aka school glue, aka Elmers. My goto for glues are Aleene's Tacky glue, or CA glues

20+ years of carving experience, I sharpen exacto and similar knives. In the time it would take me to get the blades out of the cabinet I could have a freshly sharpened blade that is 2X sharper than the factory version..

Hey that finger knife is a grand idea.. thanks for the site.. Don't you ever sharpen your used blades.. I sharpen all my blades knifes and such I like to sharpen in the evening while I watch a movie or something along those lines.. Drill bits and saw blades I do every friday right after noon.. Thanks for the share of some very cool toys.. I must get me a couple of t hem..

I'm thinking of using stock paper to glue on the backs of jigsaw puzzles to keep them together (possibly for framing). Which of these glues would you suggest I go with?

Also try matte medium (various brands, found with painting supplies) for your mod podge needs. It's generally better quality.

The only pair of tweezers I have are similar to your third pair, the Sizzix, only mine are Chinese made. Amazingly needle pointed and incredibly stabby! The only pair that go back in their clamshell blister pack. Glad it wasn't a one time blister pack as they really do need something to be stored in away from other tools. Capable of remarkable precision though, you can grab half a human hair with them.

12:03 OMG. I dabble a little in electronics. And everybody knows with the parts so small these days that a good pair of tweezers are life. But it is actually rare to get a recommendation. I now have many tweezers that are just barely not shit, but far from good.

UV Archival clear coat is a must for any paper project to last. Even on Photo prints when not using museum glass (look at the price). Most school prints of kids (school picture day) will fade rather fast.

I think (not sure) white school glue is PVA, but it has water and fillers so that they can sell less product for the same price.

The Fiskars razor saw blades are nice, but the lock mechanism on that handle is plastic on plastic and wears down fast. Regular Xacto blades not fitting is unfortunate too, since the Fiskars seem to be hard to find or expensive.

I suspect they are actually surgical blades. I have for electronics work a couple of surgical handles and 3 packs of different shape blades. Will last my life time! The blades come individually packed and sterilized.

Most of the standard knife blades will be a run-of-the-mill stainless steel, sometimes called “surgical” steel. An excellent material, but it trades hardness for toughness. I.E., it is more likely to bend rather than break with excessive force. However it is likely to lose its edge faster, particularly when cutting a challenging material such as paper. I suspect the X-Life blades are a tool steel. That would explain the coated part of the blade, to control rust. More of a challenge to manufacture since it is brittle and will wear out manufacturing tools faster. But, much better for paper, cardboard etc. I would be tempted to try to resharpen these blades but that would be quite a challenge.

You're gonna need a very fine grinding disk and some kind of a jig to hold the blades at a very precise angle , otherwise you will ruin the blades.

I use #11 scalpel blades a box of a hundred is around 10$ and it includes a handle

PVA = polyvinyl acetate That's why PVA glue has a slight vinegar smell - the acetate (acetic acid aka white vinegar)

PVA glue is "white Glue" the same way cyanoacrylate glue is commonly referred to as "super"

I have an old pair of tweezers with tiny teeth at the ends, probably like the pair you have. It's tissue tweezers for securely holding tissue (flesh or muscular). At least that's what I've come to understand.

I really like that heavy duty knife but a big problem is that cap. It's incredibly loose fitting and not secure at all.

I wrap my caps in good electrical tape, like 3M Super 33. A few tight wraps. That makes the cap really snug so they don't fall off. Plus they sell it in different colors to make them easy to find. Home Depot has it by the electrical tools.

Save any old plastic food container with a lid, like yogurt or sour cream. Tape the lid down very securely, and then cut a slot in the lid with a single cut. Slide old blades through the slot. Tape over the slot when you're throwing it away.

@@Beamer1969 from what I can figure it would depend on use. The standard blades are made of cheap steel and are basically considered consumables. However I have seen jigs for sharpening xacto type blades so your milage may vary.

Don't throw away blades willy-nilly, sharpen them! You wouldn't throw away a kitchen knife at first signs of dullness would you? A quick sharpen goes a long way.

Came to comment this exact thing. Several times a particular part or function of a tool is being referred to and instead of showing that, it cuts to some B roll paper cutting.
