Brian Henson is not only chairman of the board at The Jim Henson Company, he's cofounder and chairman of the company Dopl, which creates next-level 3D-printed miniatures of people and pets. How is it different from other personalized figurine manufacturers? To show him just that, Brian and Dopl cofounder and CEO Michael Anderson take Adam behind the scenes of their Brooklyn factory, where Adam works on (and breaks) his own figurine ... and learns just how difficult -- but exciting! -- it is to bring inanimate objects to life (not unlike Brian's OTHER job).

It's so cool that the figures are automatically balanced to stand because the 3d model comes from an actual balanced stance. They are so tiny yet you can almost feel the weight of how they carry themselves. This is so awesome!

The model was used as part of the shop display (featuring other customers, too, not just me), and after a few months we were invited to come and collect our model. I got one of those done, at a similar scale, in 2015 at the local (Dallas) ComiCon/Fan Expo, wearing my Starfleet uniform. Some time before that, I read an article on how to make a 3D photo booth for your 3D printer. I think it used the then-popular game controller as a 3D scanner, with the subject standing on a turntable. The one I used was photometric _only_ as far as I could tell. It didn't have anything that appeared to be a 3D scanner, and I think it was a bit early to have time-of-flight detectors that looked like regular camera lenses. It had several cameras at different heights on a mast, and revolved that around the subject.

I thought the print and prep would be easier, and they'd be much more expensive. But it's much more work-intensive, and less expensive than imagined.

That is crazy that to finish them and give them strength they give them a bath in super glue. Very interesting!

I am from the UK and really wish we had something like this here, but as far as I am aware, this stuff does not exist here (and if it does, it would be extremely expensive). The closest I can think of is those 3D laser-cubes where they take any photograph of you, make it 3D and then burn that into a CUBE making a cool 3D Sculpture inside the cube, but these cost a lot and as cool as they are, they are not as cool as this (yet cost way more than this). This is one of those things wear I wish you could scan yourself in using Lidar/ToF or something on a phone, send it to them and they do thew rest, allowing anyone across the globe to get a chance.

My daughter and I got our Dopl done 2 weeks ago at the NY location! It’s an amazing process, I cannot wait to see the finished product! (It ships to you in about 6-8 weeks)

While the white dot on the eyes is a nice touch, it would help if it was on the same place in both eyes, not in seemingly random places like in some of those models. Also, the same effect could probably be achieved by actually "glazing" each eye with a drop of clear epoxy resin, but I guess they don't want to wait for resin to dry.

Having opened a brick and mortar 3D portrait studio over 6 years ago I'm happy to see it working out even if it didn't when we tried. The tech wasn't quite there fully. I know this setup intimately. We called them minis. I like dopl. I think we even considered that term at one or two points.

I know someone that takes their powder bed printer to conventions and does 3d prints of cosplayers, he makes good money doing it, and the cosplayers are always thrilled with the results.

Yeah, i was thinking of something like that as well, making your own game avatars, whatever game that might be. I mean, WoW offered that options about a decade ago, kinda wish i bought one of my main character. I've always been into customizing figures, but mostly when i was a kid, taking G.I Joes apart and recombining their parts into something that i liked. I wanted to introduce that when we started to get into D&D, because i wanted more than a drawing or some text describing my character, and this was the mid 90s, there was basically only LARPing and that was a bit too much for me. Eventually i never really got into D&D but i did end up making some more custom Joes.
