Adam Savage Learns About Full Body Puppeteering at Henson's Creature Shop!

While Adam has some experience with full body puppets (Totoro, Revenant Bear), his costumes weren't made to wear for hours on end, nor did they include heavy animatronics. At Jim Henson's Creature shop, creative supervisor Peter Brooke takes Adam through the designing and building of Junior Gorg from Fraggle Rock, while performer Morgana Ignis demonstrates how to bring the beloved character to life!

The best part of this video is at 11:34 when the head puppeteer matches the body performer's vocals and Adam starts to make eye-contact with the Junior Gorg instead of the performer.

@@vigilantcosmicpenguin8721 a few years ago I got to meet Red and Mokey Fraggle. I like to say it that way because while it was Karen Prell and Kathryn Mullen with the puppets "on hand", I found myself having a full on conversation with the puppets.

@@vigilantcosmicpenguin8721 I remember seeing a clip of when Jim Henson was a guest on Carson's Tonight Show, and I think he started the interview normally (as Jim) but then a minute or two later, he puts on the Kermit puppet and Jim disappeared right in front of our eyes. I think Carson even mentioned during that interview how incredible it was having a conversation with a puppet, even though the performer was right there. The Henson puppeteers are almost "too" good at what they do sometimes. I've also had the pleasure of attending a handful of performances of "Puppet Up!" over the years and that show format has the same juxtaposition where the performers don't stay hidden at all, they just wear solid black outfits on the stage and their puppets are framed by a camera that is positioned all the way downstage-center looking at the performers. There are projection screens in the theatre that the audience can see that shows the puppets as if you were watching them on TV at home. To be able to see it all happen in real-time is kind of mindblowing. The best way I've been able to describe the show is that it's like "Whose Line Is It Anyway?", but with puppets! They do lots of improv during the show, too. It's just...incredible. And FUN!

For those that don't know the person in the suit is Morgana Ignis. She was in Obi-Wan Kenobi. She played The Sandman in the 2017 Film 'The Sandman' and she's been in a bunch of Sci Fi/horror. I love her style and the name Morgana.

I'm incredibly excited to see their work for the Five Nights at Freddys movie. There is no other studio that is more perfect for a film like that than Hensons workshop, and I cannot wait to see the quality of the suits and how scary they might look.

I LOVED Fraggle Rock as a child, and seeing everything behind even one of the side characters is phenomenal. The Henson’s assembled a group that loved what they were doing and put their heart and soul into it. They were absolute MASTERS of puppeteering.

I've done a bit of amateur puppetry and can confirm, once you're into the swing of things it starts to feel _wrong_ for the puppet to not be 'present' even when you're not performing. It's only when you put them down they stop being a 'character' and revert to being an object. It's weird.

Great job! Can tell you’re top of your game. I have experience knowing what it’s like being on set from dusk till dawn for 18hrs+ at times in a costume for months on end, but nothing quite as elaborate as the ones you work in! You have my utmost respect as I know how challenging it can be. Every time I felt miserable I’d just step back and realise how amazing the memories are that I was making. Made the days go in so much quicker lol. Most of my locations were in Scotland so it was mostly freezing, but sometimes sweating my butt off lol.

The hands of the puppet looks very agile. The head mechanism looks very impressive & the monitor inside makes it sound like it was the HUD of a powered exoskeleton.

I was just cry-laughing when they put the upper bodysuit on and she just *whoomph* disappeared for a second. The amount of talent it takes to puppeteer a suit that doesn't match your body proportions at all...! Everyone involved in making and wearing these suits is amazing.

For me, the thing that makes me think most of Full Body Puppeteering, in relation to the Jim Henson Company is Bear in the Big Blue House; I still can't comprehend how Noel MacNeal was able to puppeteer and voice a character, in a suit that was noticeably weighty and cumbersome, and probably required either lots of rest breaks or the AC cranked up to the max. That's a show I really hope eventually gets the same revival efforts that Fraggle Rock is currently receiving.

"As a puppeteer, your Situational Awareness has to utterly shift." "Oh, completely" "Your PROPRIOCEPTION has to now include the costume ." I have never heard that word before! GOOGLE says : -Proprioception (or kinesthesia) is the sense though which we perceive the position and movement of our body, including our sense of equilibrium and balance, senses that depend on the notion of force. -For example, proprioception enables a person to close their eyes and touch their nose with their index finger. Other examples of proprioception include: Knowing whether feet are on soft grass or hard cement without looking (even while wearing shoes) Balancing on one leg. .... Thanks for the lesson Adam!!

Amazing, I always loved the work they did at Henson's Creature Shop. They pushed the bounds of the technology I remember watching a Secret of the Muppets special as a kid that included an early fully digitally animated character. There is something about puppeteering that just can never be replaced with animation. They have a certain liveliness to them, so much so that they can actually get perceived as real people. It would not take me long to adjust and interact with one of the muppets asif they were their own individuals.

WOW, I am so struck by how MANY people are necessary to make a full-body puppet like this work! The body performer, two or more people to put the costume on, a DIFFERENT person to operate the servos! Seriously, so many... This is slightly terrifying to imagine, becoming just a CANVAS for other people's art, to manipulate to their ends, and you're gonna HELP, but you're not FULLY independent... Just gives me more awe and respect for these Creature Shop pros!!

Adam briefly mentioning the Godzilla costume sweat (which is 100% true by the way) makes me wish he could somehow visit the set of a kaiju movie and see the love and attention that would go into shooting something like that. I think he'd be absolutely delighted.

During first season of 'Dinosaurs!', a friend took me on a private tour of the set! We have all seen 'behind the scenes' of Studios in general; lighting, sets, back-drops, props. In Henson's world, we see puppeteers 'built into the set', or even living inside their creations. In all of this, you are never prepared for how badly it stinks! Here is a sample of the ingredients of the heady brew: Paint of all kinds, adhesives, sweat, stale snacks, over-flowing garbage-cans, old beverages that got tipped over and are sticky to the floor, sweat, spilled booze, the odd joint shared around the set, more sweat. And that is when everything is going well! Desperation to make dead-lines contribute subtle notes of Lavender and collective Madness. A professional set is grinding out footage 12-18 hours a day, under banks of hot light when it's active. It's a big closed room with no air circulation between sessions. "They smell baaaad!" Rock Biter, 'The Never Ending Story'

Wow! This suit is nothing like the ones the actors wear at the Disney themeparks. I had a friend who worked as a performer for Disney at their Florida location and she measured the temperature inside her suit (at the height of summer, but in a shaded location) to be around 120 degrees F. This suit's mesh outer layer, even with all that yarn-work, must breath a lot better than Disney's polyester nightmares.

Seeing the Muppets and how both amazingly well crafted *and* how "Lets keep the price/weight/etc" down is just stunning to me. The amount of detail work and trials and testing over the years has to be mindboggling to find that perfect sweet spot for performer/crafter/designer. Just amazing.

The actor wearing the original Godzilla suit really suffered a lot during filming, the suit was extremely heavy, stiff, and hot, he occasionally passed out from it.

I just spent two weeks as an Easter Bunny at a mall where the head was 7 pounds of fiberglass and rested on my shoulders for animated movement, pressing into the skin. There were barely any holes to breathe and the viewing area, about four inches across by two inches tall, was the same as my breathing area. I had to literally tape neck fans into the head to have air circulate to help me feel less like a sauna. I envy these costumes that have actual ability to breathe, semi-good visibility and the ability to have motion and movement at the whim of a performer.

In all of these videos, it just feels like magic that everything can be brought together to make a compelling whole. I understand sewing, I understand potentiometers and servos, but to bring them all together takes an incredible amount of skill.

I was raised on Fraggle Rock, so this takes me back to being six and staring at the tv with a box of raisins. In fact, on car trips when I got bored and wanted to know how much longer until we got where we were going, my mom would tell me the distance in Fraggle Rock episodes. Of course back then we had no internet or devices to watch, so I had to imagine the episode in my head.

In Finnish its easy: if it has a name, its "hän" (be it human or a pet), if not, it's "se" (that is, 'it'). But I do understand that if people get to choose their name, they should also get to choose pronouns as the extension of that name, in the same manner as Latin-languages specify the gender of household objects etc. I'm going to guess that Morgana would like to be seen as a "she", so until otherwise indicated. I'm not going to do so :)

I was blessed to work as a local tech on a Muppets live show. one of the most unforgettable sights were all the performers sitting backstage when they were off... around several 8 foot tables with fans on them.. and their mouths wide open desperately trying to get a cool breeze into the costume so they can go out and continue. The work these performers do amazed me! Thanks Adam and Morgana for making this stagehand smile with a great memory!

I always wondered how they do full body puppets! I've been rewatching Bear in The Big Blue House with my son and I'm always amazed by the puppetry

Bear works different actually! No tech, just one arm being used as the puppet arm for the head (eyebrows controlled by finger) while the other is in one of the actual arms (other arm is fake or sometimes a glove controlled by someone else). Noel MacNeal is honestly one of the coolest people alive. Big Bird works the same way!

Loving these so much. The Henson Workshop is the ILM of the puppet world. Their work is always just insanely brilliant, and fluffy and in most cases very cute. 😂 Please let me know you’re doing a video with the dog from Fraggle Rock, I loved that dog as a child. 😂

I can imaging that, with a VR set in the head, you could actually control the eyes and mouth directly from facial expressions, and have the actor see from the actual eyes of the character. Modern tech has come so far since the suit was built. And still the simple tech is so convincing!

The whole time I'm watching them suit up the puppeteer, all I can think about is all the sort of pratfalls Junior Gorg is prone to. It is crazy to imagine having to do all that in that suit! Also I've wanted to work in the creature shop since I was very small. My jealousy is through the roof.

Given the current narrative against LGBTQ people, seeing Morgana rule the suit was excellent news, even more impressive than the technology. The inclusiveness within Henson's Creature Shop was way more admirable, but I also get and grok the technology. This was two stories at once, and both heavily against book burning and human demonizing twerps. $0.02 Lovin' it! Thanks Adam!

I don't remember whatching Fraggle Rock, but I've seen Jim Henson's Company works like Sesame Street, The Dark Crystal (my favorite) and the Muppets and They're Always So Stunning, I'm thrilled right now, I want to cry because of how beautiful work they did and keep doing

Im 47 now, used to love Fraggle Rock as a toddler here in the UK back in the 80s up to the early 90s I think. It's still great. Is that the same costume as used back then. Awww ma, I caught a fwaggle

It is so incredible to be able to see how some of this puppeteering is done. It doesn't take away from the magic of a performance at all. You still get lost in watching the characters and forget all about the mechanics of it all.

I can't wait to see what Adam's next "Adam incognito" costume is, now that he's gotten a look at all these different construction and puppetry techniques. I have a feeling he's going to adapt some of these things for it!
