Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Hasbro Mandalorian Helmet Repaint!

Күн бұрын

Adam shows you how to take Hasbro's The Black Series Mandalorian helmet and make it look more like the prop used on the show. As Adam and Norm experiment with the paint process, they run into unexpected results that make the helmet look amazing. Using some standard clear coat spray spray paint, airbrushed floor wax, and a weathering pass of Archive-X acrylic, you can transform the off-the-shelf helmet into a cosplay-worthy piece with just the right amount of shine and grime!

Hey as great as the quality of the Anovos pieces are, it’s probably good to acknowledge that very many of their customers never got their products, or were strung along through years of delays. I see a really good looking replica of Mando's helmet... But I also see a blank Mandalorian helmet ready to be painted. Many of the Mandalorians in the show had either identical helmets painted different colors and/or with little addons. It's a good Mando helmet replica, but it's also a good starting point to be your own Mandalorian.

@@MjStrwy I'm working on a backstory in which my Mandalorian would have an absolutely pristine, hardly-ever-worn helmet which has never been in a battle, a flight suit, and no other Beskar at all. You do you. That's the fun of cosplay. 🙂

@@MjStrwy Thank you for asking! Linu Ial was born around 60 BBY. Her second mission went wrong resulting in her entire squad being killed, with only 2 exceptions. She was left too crippled to fight after that. Since she couldn't fight, she wasn't banished to Concordia. She worked for Pre Vizsla as a spy, helping keep him informed as to what was going on on Mandalore. Like everyone else, under Duchess Satine's orders she had been stripped of all her equipment, including her helmet. For her work, she was eventually given a new helmet and a complete set of Beskar which she kept carefully hidden. After Maul killed Pre Vizsla, she refused to work for Maul and left Mandalore to live a nomadic life as a scrap dealer, seeking out lost pieces of Beskar. She eventually found her way to where The Tribe was living. She told The Armorer her story, turned over all the Beskar she had collected and that was on the suit she still had, with only the exception of her helmet, at which time the Armorer gave her a one-time opportunity to put the helmet back on and live by the Mandalorian Creed, which she accepted. Since then she has continued to deal in scrap metal and hunt for lost Beskar on behalf of The Tribe.

Adam- do not promote Anovos! They have taken fans money for YEARS and not delivered products from Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel and Ghostbusters. They now appear to be operating under the name Denuo Novo though that company claims they have nothing to do with them. They will not answer if Joe Salcedo or Dana Gasser of Anovos are involved in this new company. If they are, they don't deserve one penny.

I'm in the same camp about Anovos. They charge the moon for products that are just "pretty good", but then they either take forever (or sometimes never) to deliver the product. I just ordered this Hasbro helmet and will be doing the detailing myself now after watching this. Disney / Lucasfilm needs to align themselves with an efficient consumer oriented prop company to make products rather than the Anovos clowns

Making stuff look worn and used like this is amazing. Ive done a LITTLE bit of stuff like this, and when i do i try and think about WHERE on the object would get the most wear, where you would actually grab it when taking a helmet off and on. I think about where the helmet would hit the ground if you were fall or lay back on it, basically where the dirt and grime would end up at from your hands and the world around you as well as where that same dirt and grime would end up being rubbed off or smeared around the most.

I see where the acrylics for panel lining would be good for time. If time wasn't a factor and you had issues with the acrylics drying too quickly (looked like Norm was having trouble), oil paints have a much longer cure time, so they're easier to remove.

Don't get me wrong, I love the weathered look on these helmets. Both of them turned out looking really good. Beautiful though the weathering is, it's inaccurate to the material. I don't agree that the Mando armor needs to be beaten to Hell and back, and here's why: Beskar doesn't rust, and this helmet for Djarin, as we saw, was constructed of beskar harvested during the Great Purge. He also takes care of this armor because his upbringing means that respecting it is respecting his culture. This is the way. The beskar will dirty in battle, but it will be cleaned and maintained meticulously much like a samurai and his katana. Mando sticks out in this beaten up and dirty galaxy because of this. So I don't feel it is anyone's right to begrudge clean armor. If someone wants beaten up armor, they can have it; inaccurate as it may be it does look nice. But any cosplayer who understands the character enough to also keep their armor clean is 100% ok in my book.

I would guess that the screen used version exaggerated the effect so it would show better on the screen, where some detail will be lost. Items that will be viewed up close and personal can get by with less, and probably look better that way.

The chrome shine that Adam got on the helmet just from using a Rust-Oleum clear spray can blew my fricken mind!!! It was such a good finish.

And then he hit it with the floor wax and brought it back down 😩, that hurt me a little.

thinners based wood stain can be used on chrome to various shades of gold and red while still keeping the mirror finish . spray can galvanised paint dries grey and is soft but with a lite rub with steel wool gives a shiny metal finish good for wood/plastic props

I really like that chrome-ish effect that Adam got on his initially. Kind of Mandalorian meets Cylon, which may not be that practical for combat armor, but it sure looks great.

This is such perfect timing for this video!! I just got my bobafett helmet and want to paint it to make it look more screen accurate, I'm soo excited to weather it and seeing this is helping so much to understand how to make it look even better, where to go harder and where to give space for the eyes to rest and fill in the story

Oh man, I have to get one now. Especially since it's got a great price! And the fact that Archive-X is based in the UK is just fantastic for a European like me. Can't wait to paint a helmet for myself!
