Frank shows us his workflow and tips for keeping his paint brushes clean after using them, including what cleaners to use and how different types of brushes can be treated differently. Whether you run a large workshop or just work out of your garage, we want to hear your shop tips that you rely on in your projects. Post them in the comments below!

I don't normally get wound up when celebrities die. Him, and Steve Irwin were 2 that hit me pretty hard, on a personal level, which just doesn't normally happen to me. My son actually really enjoyed watching him too, and he is 13yr old now. My son actually has a toaster we got from Hobby Lobby. When you taste the bread that has a bust of Bob Ross.

I recommend viewing some of the other youtube videos on the subject of brush cleaning. The most helpful one I found illustrated the technique of using a tiny amount of solvent, like an eighth of an inch, immersing the brush and swooshing it around, then using a stainless steel wire brush to scrub the bristles out. Discard the solvent, use fresh, and repeat a couple more times. It requires a miniscule amount of solvent and leaves the brush about as free of paint as it's possible to get. If you want to minimize solvent use even further, you can try discarding into a container and letting the paint settle to the bottom and decant and reuse the solvent for the early cleaning stages, finishing with fresh.

Sarcasm aside, I was really hoping for some tips from a professional. For instance, when Frank has cleaned the brush at 3:55 he wipes it on a paper towel but in practice it will remain damp, hence the advice to lay it flat to dry out. Is that really good enough ? In my experience if you do what he does then put the brush back into clean solvent the brush releases more of what it is contaminated with so it was not really clean after all, merely less dirty than it was.

That's always been fine for me. I typically (lightly) press it into the corner of a jar and rotate until you see it stop releasing paint. Although this is with small brushes and GWs acrylic paints, might be different for you.

"One "main" wash in solvent, dry off on paper towel then into fresh solvent for a final "rinse" then paper towel again and stand to dry. " That is the method that I use too. I was surprised that Frank went straight from a wash in dirty solvent to drying the brush and finished without a second wash in fresh solvent. For some contaminants, such as glue, it might not matter but for paint I believe that it does. Unless, of course, you keep a brush for every colour of paint used. The situation is different if you can clean the brush under running water as the solvent does not become dirty but for cases where other solvents are used or where running water is not available what was demonstrated seems wrong to me. I would be interested to hear Frank's take on this.

The reason why natural brushes are better is because they hold onto the paint better, synthetic brushes have a tendency to release all of the paint at once onto what you're painting, pretty catastrophic for painting minis. Also really important for detail brushes is to clean with a brush conditioner, it keeps the bristles uniform and in shape. "The Masters" brush cleaner and preserver is what I use.

thumbs up for the right idea. I'm commenting here because you are being to general. Pardon my boldness but you need to be talking about specific compounds. As an example I would say something like. for acrylic paint I would use _____ for watercolors I would use _____ for painting leather I would use ____ Keep making!

Cool! I'm in school majoring in painting so I work with oil paints frequently. I just use ivory soap worked into a lather with warm water. I clean my brushes after each use (unlike some of my fellow classmates lol).

Ok we all already know the proper way to clean your brush is with odorless paint thinner with a screen inside the can. Then you shake it off in a trash can and just beat the devil out of it.

How to clean things the right way: 1. Get bag 2. Put brushes in bag 3. Take bag to dump 4. Go to store 5. Buy new brushes 6. Buy yourself a drink because you earned it after all that hard work. I suggest a fruity seltzer water. They're rather tasty.

I have a jar of mineral spirits with an upside down can with holes punched in the bottom. It keeps the bottom clear of sludge when I drub the brush on it. The goop falls through the holes. I've used it for years just occasionally adding more spirits as needed. For natural bristles I just use a bit of hair conditioner on them after cleaning to keep them supple.

I like how this video doesn't feel manufactured or over-planned. All those solvents are half-empty and dirty from use; feels like it was just "What videos can we make?" "Hmm, I'll grab all my solvents!"

I paint model kits. Another tip when using water soluble paints is to have three receptacles of water for cleaning brushes between colours, not just one. The first will remove the majority of the paint, but the last will remain clear and ensure you're not cleaning your brushes in dirty water. When I'm done, I give the brushes a final clean in Revell's powerful brush cleaning solution to remove any stubborn paint, then reshape the bristles.

You should had mentioned how to stop your brush from getting excessively dirty in the first place. Wet the bristles in the solvent that the paint is based, and tap upside down so it works its way into the ferrule. It stays wet so that the paint that runs in doesn't get stuck inside the ferrule; which is otherwise impossible to clean since paint dries so quick when it gets inside the ferrule.

Andrew Delashaw since this is an awesome tip, I'd like to add to this the not so obvious suggestion that you should always clean your brushes asap. if you've got to finish a job forest, at least start the brushes soaking in the solvent when their job is done.

For acrylic paints (nameley Citadel, Golden, Vallejo) I work the bristles around pomade. The wax, or fat, or whatever the stuff is will remove the paint residue and help keep the bristles (the sable hair ones at least) from fraying.

It's also a good idea to not mash the brush into the bottom of the cup for the same reason you don't want to leave it sitting at the bottom of the cup. Spin the brush against the side of the cup at a slight angle to work the solvent in to the bristles.

Isn't the general preference for drying a brush for it to be hanging upside down so that water/solvent/paint doesn't work its way into the ferrule while it's drying? Those bristle sleeves on some of the brushes are great for this. Clean the brush, make sure the bristles are in the factory shape, sleeve it, and place it upside down in your brush cup. Gravity pulls the moisture away from the ferrule, and the bristles are held of the bottom of the cup.

I use Turpentine Oil AKA paint thinner, works a treat, also you can use it to wash wall paint off your hands so easily.

All this is pretty much "common sense", but I was hoping for more from this video. I'm always looking for ways to reduce putting solvents into the water supply, or groundwater, and have yet to really find any reasonable methods that work for even the average individual.

Tip: Grab some brush soap for smaller scale and nice quality brushes (Kolinsky Sable). Helps them keep the tip and last longer. Also gets the paint out of the roots :)

I left my iPad stylus in white spirits for a while and treated it with a linseed oil solution. It didn't turn out too well, when I do this with my Hogs hair brushes this problem doesn't seem to happen. I think my stylus is ruined, ho hum, I can just use a Photoshop or Instagram filter to make it look like an oil paining at the click of a mouse button. What's going wrong, Tested?!

All kidding aside the BEST cleaner for brushes is Montana Gold's Acetone can. The pressure of the aerosol and acetone helps blow out all residue inside and outside your brushes. Your welcome.

I love the idea of this. One of the biggest problems of painting, for me anyway, is keeping my brushes clean. Keeping them completely free of paint so they dont contaminate other paints down the line. Im sad to see that the video was so short though. It didnt go into enough detail for me. oh well, cant have it all.

This was a bit lacking in anything new, they didn't mention to wipe off as much of the paint from the brush as possible before putting in the solvent, nor did they say to use a plastic under the nail brush ,with some soap on it, to brush the bristles of the paint brush into it to remove paint from near the ferrule.

I only use brushes to paint rooms. If it's latex paint, I just throw out the brush. It''s not worth the time to clean it. When I can easily replace it with a 4 or 5 dollar brush.

Love the channel, but that was truly a worthless video. I think viewers will be after much more process, and process is only lightly addressed in the video. Most people will intuitively understand "use an appropriate solvent." Then what? Wash with soap and water afterward? Any tips on keeping the brush fibers in good condition other than "Don't leave it in the solvent cup?" Other?

I doubt ClF3 would fail to take care of any residual paint on your brush, though. Just be careful that you don't get it in your eyes, on your body, your clothes, the floor, a glass beaker, near water, or anywhere else except the container it came in and make sure nothing can scratch or rub on the inside of that container. And always wear running shoes when handling it, in case something does go wrong and the floor catches fire.

Sorry guys. Telling us to clean a brush in an appropriate solvent isn't very informative. How about how to clean a stubborn brush without using litres of solvent? How about whether used solvent can be separated / filtered? So much more you could have done. Not even much of a demo really. You're usually so much better than this!
