I was just told by the guy I bought my used cells from that a voltage test is not accurate and the only way to properly re condition a battery is to load test each individual cell after it has been charged and discharged 3 times.
@wheeldealstt54454 жыл бұрын
This is correct, you have to load it them monitor it's discharge. Sometimes they would show good voltage on a table test but then won't hold charge when it's in the vehicle

You should test the NiMh batteries with load. There are not so many packs so you could connect each pack with wires to the cabin and measure the voltages when driving the car. Using very thin insulated wires makes it more safe in case of short circuit. I don’t know if service stations have a measuring jig for this as it is very reliable way to detect bad packs. There may be a computer program which measures all the voltages as a plotter. BTW, you don’t have to swap the test leads when measuring (when using a digital multimeter).

Always take the orange caps and the 8mm bolts out of each cell and check for corrosion behind the orange plate under each nut . I almost always end up cleaning up a bunch of corrosion on the 1st 2nd and 3rd generation prius battery's and camry hybrid batterys as well. In the 2nd gen prius their really bad about leaking rain water from the factory moldings at the top of where the hatch shuts in its track .also above the tail light too. You should always inspect for water trails and do a leak test on the 2nd gens because water is the #killer of these battery's. I always take the drain grommet out of the battery hole and spare tire hole if they do leak until i can confirm the leak is gone. Best of luck everyone . This is good knowledge to have considering gas vehicles will unfortunately be a thing of the past within the next 10 to 20 years and best believe the ones experienced in these hybrid cells will be making bank if they wanted to open their own shop

Usually a multimeter test works...but not always. You might have to load test the Cells individually, or take it to a shop that can Test them....still dirt cheap though!. But yeah, most people get away with a quick Meter check, swap out the Modules that are reading Lower than the rest, done deal. But like I said, it really depends....not everyone's situation is exactly the same.

Only defective modules can be found via the voltage. With a capacity measurement, weak modules can also be found. These weak modules are among the first to be broken the next time. I found a 7.4 volt module with only 1800 mAh. Normally old modules (year 2007) have approx. 5500 to 6500 mAh. You need to test each individual cell with load. Fully charge the battery first, get the voltage reading without load and then check again with the load. You can use a 12V light bulb as load and test it. The good battery do not drop voltage and it holds up the load.

yes, my innova scanner is able to show each module (which consist of 2 cells). In the particular prius that I have right now all modules read at 15v. I believe this reading varies, even on a good battery, when under load. The reading may be higher around 16v. I assume thats because the battery is being charge also. No clue really, just assuming. Also when testing, i believe each module needs to be within .2v of each other. Again not sure. heh.

So let me get this straight. If your hybrid battery fails, it could be due to bad modules/cells? If you replace the module/cell then your battery will work? Can someone explain this because this just made since of why dealerships want to charge an arm and a leg to replace the battery.
@94SexyStang7 жыл бұрын
Yep, the entire battery doesn't fail....just a couple CELLS that need to be swapped out....The reason the entire battery loses performance from only 1 or 2 bad cells, is because the Battery is wired in SERIES...which means Each Cell is wired to it's neighboring cell....basically Each Cell is DEPENDANT on the others to Work properly. Think of a Train going down the tracks, if one Cart loses it's wheels the Entire Line of train carts begin to suffer too. But anyways, the reason they Wire the Cells that way, is because they combine power. If you wire Five 12-volt batteries together in one Line(series), you don't have 12 volts anymore, you got 60 volts! Same idea here...Each Prius Cell is only like 7 volts, not much power, but you wire a friggin Ton of them together in Series, you got a TON of power.
@snoobler7 жыл бұрын
It's the difference between a temporary vs. "permanent" repair. Once the "module replacement" process starts, it's something you keep doing every 3-6 months. When a dealer installs a new battery for "an arm and a leg," you're getting a new pack that will likely last 100K+.

I am not sure that is the right way to test the cells. I got an engine light which said the battery needed to be replaced. I checked the voltage by techstream software and several packs(two cells in each pack) showed a voltage around 17 volt for my Lexus. it's supposed to be above 20 volt. I removed the battery and tested the cells. All cells showed around 10.5 volts. So according to your test that is 21 volt per pack. So all cells were good according to your test but they are not. So your test does not really work.

NEWSFLASH SHIRTLESS WONDER, voltage is irrelevant ! The load required to move a 2400 lb "car" is significant, potential energy is measured in each load cell by how much amperage it can produce in a symphony (unfortunately by bad design, no cell jump circuit). Potential energy is amperage where as voltage is the electron force. Physics 101. These little cells are a bad design because theyre low quality 8v compartmental cells that fatigue and reverse with each charging/discharging cycle. In street terms, kind of like bending an aluminum can back n forth--eventually they give and reverse their polar electron field because they`re unstable. Why do you think Hybrids are going through Generations ? Theyre at the stage where lithium cells may come in but ask burned vapor cig owners and Samsung cell owners about that--hmm, a japenese Hindenburg--new image of a wienny roast !
