As a luthier and guitar player, I hated the silicone fingertips until my grandfather quit playing guitar. I asked why, and his reason was the pain. In his 80s with diabetes and countless medications, the pressure caused him immense pain in spite of his callouses. I bought him some, and while they did not eliminate the pain, they did lessen it a great deal and he began playing again. Every now and then a seemingly stupid gadget benefits people with disabilities. Most are just dumb, though. The hand expander will cause serious damage and permanently weaken your hands if you use it as suggested by the manufacturer.

I had a woodworking accident and lost just a slight tip of my left pink and index finger. And I had a few concerts coming up. Thanks to these silicon fingertips I could perform, now everything is healed and I don't need these anymore.

There are two ways to be able to play guitar without finger pain #1 = Practicing slowly at first and build up calluses #2 = Play the heck out of your fingers and lose all nerve feeling in them so you don't have to worry about pain Edit: And I wonder why my phone doesn't recognize my fingers on my left hand :|

The silicone finger thingies actually worked really well… I started playing 4 weeks ago and after 2 days my fingers couldn’t take anymore so I got those, you still develop calluses and since a total newbie can’t change chords as fast as you, it was very helpful…. Within a week of using them I had enough of a callus that I didn’t need them anymore. Just throwing that out there for total newbies like me because I probably would’ve quit bc of the pain if I didn’t have them. 🥰

I bought the finger protectors. Yeah. Mistake. But here is something that DID help: you can get a paint-on callus protector for your finger tips! It has the consistency of crazy glue, but unlike crazy glue, it is non-toxic. You only put it on the very ends. This really helped! The stuff I used was called "Quik Callus," but I think they are out of business now. I've played enough so I have natural calluses now, but this stuff really took the edge off. Here is another good thing: it is a thumb pick that has a little spring in it to hold it to your thumb! Black Mountain is the brand. Rock on! :)

Honestly, when I started playing bass I had a hard time stretching my fingers to hit 4 frets. I helped train my hand to be more comfortable making that stretch by spreading my fingers as wide as they would go and then press them into my thigh, keeping them stretched for a movie or while doing something else. Mixing that with playing every day really helped my hand adjust to the miles of fretboard the bass has. While product 1 is not really needed, I would of used it if I had it lol

The stickers would be better if it was more like a clear plastic with printed note stamps, but have it strap to the neck like that fret thingy you demonstrated. Billie Eilish (idk i suck at spelling ok) is not emo she is *alternative* Google classifies "emo music" as "a style of *rock music* characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics. It originated in the mid-1980s hardcore punk movement of Washington, D.C., where it was known as "emotional hardcore" or "emocore" and pioneered by bands such as Rites of Spring and Embrace." Therefore, it has more of a "punk" or "hard rock" sound, if that makes sense.

Hello Elise, When I set up an acoustic guitar for a newcomer, I always install the following strings: Elixir Acoustic Guitar Strings - Phosphor Bronze - Nanoweb Coating - 10|47 - Extra Light These strings are easier on the finger tips than standard gauge. Also, a good tuner is a must. This is my choice: Snark ST-2 Multi-Instrument Chromatic Tuner I've been a happy Snark fan for two decades. Wishing you the very best with your musical dreams and endeavors.

While the “easy fret” and the finger caps are pretty much a waste of time, I DO wonder if a disabled person would benefit from them. I can’t off the top of my head think of any particular reason that would need these, but if they give someone the opportunity to play guitar when they’re having difficulty otherwise, then that could be really neat.

I've heard of people with arthritis using the so-called Chord Buddy to play some guitar. The Chord Buddy has a really bad rep in the guitar community, even though it's touted as a learning device by the inventor, and not as a permanent solution. The Chord Buddy allows you to play the G, D, C and Em chords by pressing one of the four buttons on the device. After you've figured about how to strum and have played your first songs, you can extract the mechanisms for each chord one by one, until you play freely. But some people use it as a permanent solution, and this includes people with arthritis. Honestly, I cannot think why someone would deliberately deprive him- or herself of learning how to fret and strum the regular way, it's so rewarding -- but some people simply cannot. With a push button device and a capo you can strum to dozens of songs -- pretty impressive compared to not being able to play the guitar at all, isn't it? I know guitar players can have a real chip on their shoulder, there are people who will dismiss you as a dilettante if you are using a capo. Like such dilettantes as Keith Richards and the late Maybelle Carter.

Those finger protectors reminded me of a time that I must have gotten into some bad chemical or other while working in my garage because for months my hands and fingers were cracking and bleeding. I tried wearing nitrile gloves to play guitar but they were too sticky, kind of like your silicone finger protectors. It was like trying to drive a car with the brakes on, I couldn't slide up or down the strings and neck. Vinyl painting gloves worked better but were loose and floppy and deadened other strings but at least they got me through the ordeal. Lesson learned, it's better to wear the gloves while using caustic chemicals (or washing dishes) so you won't need to wear gloves later while playing. Speaking of sweaty fingertips reminds me, never play guitar within an hour of taking a shower, swimming, washing dishes or applying moisturizer, or you'll destroy your callouses. About those stretchers, avoid overstretching fingers or it can cause tendonitis or joint damage. The sad fact is there are just some freak of nature guitarists with incredible reach who can play chords that us mere mortals will never be able to play. So there is a time in life where dad's will transition from dad jokes to being grandpas dispensing uncalled for gross stories and unasked for advice. I believe I have successfully made the transition. Too bad though because I held a triple black belt in dad jokes.

I mean it depends on what position your hand is in. Like in 8th position you could probably do a lot more than in 2nd position. Because the frets continue to get smaller the closer you get to the sound hole.

I'm a bass guitar fan and student, I so wanted a big pick for my big hands and when I first found picks that have three sides you can use for picking the strings and they were big and chunky, I was in pick heaven, now I wish I could find them in felt too, I like the milder sound of felt picks but I need them bigger, wish my hands weren't this big.

I have both gigantic white ones like those and slightly smaller and easier darker ones. I don't think ill want to play the white ones, because, aside from the size, they're white and you can see them in the dark, so darker ones make more sense. They're heavier on the grip area and the real pick gauge at the strumming point. I have no idea what the rest of those items are and Id never even try to buy them if i saw them. I like this band Portal from Australia and they really stretch their fingers, not just while playing, but also they do stretching exercise before or in during breaks and that's probably the best way to do the stretching. Although, the first stretcher can make a good weapon, so keep it and hit people who visit you and bring one of these things with them.

V-Picks actually make some really great picks. The Phil Keaggy and TTK-5 are picks that I use (and like). They also make smaller picks for mandolin that I use as well. I have a Van Zen which is like the Big Fattie and I don't really care for it either. The idea behind them is that the pick won't spin around as easily while you are playing. Great video. Most of those helping tools are crappy gimmicks. People should just buy some lessons instead and stick with them. You are right about embracing the fingertip pain. You know that you have arrived once your fingertips have gone permanently numb.

The way I built the calluses on my fingers without them ever hurting was by playing on 9 gauge strings, which I still prefer to this day, but they never made my fingers hurt and I could still play 10 gauge strings without issue and 11 gauge for quite a while before I ever felt it.
