I think his problem with those was he could only *kinda* see it, and so he was doubting that some of what he saw was real (vs imagined) and also doubted that he was seeing everything there was to see, so between the two he's not confident in his tracing being correct, and is worried that 5-esque shape is actually a 6 or 8 and he's missing stuff.

I'm colorblind kinda like Trevor. What I see might be clusters of differently colored dots but they don't appear to form a cohesive pattern. So it's there but it's so faint that it could easily be a 5/9, or a 6/8. 1 and 7 can also look similar in those tests. It can be really confusing for colorblind individuals. I used to feel bad when people gave Matt shit and I still kind of do but if he gets mad at Trevor for something Trevor has no control over then Matt can get bipped.

@@mikecooper2566 Explaining color to someone is one of those things that's pretty much impossible though since there's no way to know if people even see color the same way to begin with. As someone with Tritanopia, with no history of colorblindness in my family, the only people who find it difficult to believe are my relatives and friends I've grown up with all my life. Mr. Quil I imagine the cheapest way to develop this is with a software-based video filter, a head mounted camera, and FPV drone goggles. PackuMira The reason is because camouflage can’t perfectly match the shades of its surroundings, but the pattern can blend in. This is why it’s effective for normal people, because we look for patterns. Colorblind people have a heightened ability to spot the difference in shading, so the difference in color stands out a little more than it does for normal people

Color blindness is actually an evolutionary benefit. That's why men are predominantly color blind. In the early days, they were mostly hunters and needed to be able to see through the camouflage of animals to hunt them. Women were the gatherers and needed to see the color of the berries and plants to determine ripeness or other factors.

@@marilynsparks5931 While I won't say it isn't a benefit or anything. I can say it is a defect. A defect that honestly doesn't matter in the ancient world. It has it's benefits and it's disadvantages. Mostly disadvantages. A lot of berries are red, blue, and darker shades. Hunting may have an advantage. Gathering defentently has its massive disadvantages. So no, it wasn't evolutionary, It is a defect

It's so wild hearing people who don't have colorblindness try and say, "THAT'S NOT HOW EYEBALLS WORK!!!!" Well, yeah, not for you. That's kind of the point. Idk, I've known three people personally who had colorblindness, two were family members, and I know lots of people who have trouble processing color (has nothing to do with the eyes and everything to do with the brain in those cases), and they all describe how they can see certain colors, but when they're all mixed together, it can fade or blend into shades of beige, brown, or gray. For some reason these guys find that unfeasible??? Idk it's wild to me that people still have wild misconceptions of what colorblindness entails.

EnChroma glasses videos are wholesome as fuck. I do recommend everyone searches for some to watch. Regarding the experiment Trevor did about crunching the hours of use into a single day, I doubt that would work. From the promotional video of the glasses, they filter out some color ranges that usually give the colorblind's faulty color receptors mixed messages. By filtering out the mixed messages, colors separate and they can basically see them. The video also said that by using the glasses periodically but consistently, the brain can be trained to ignore the mixed messages and basically correct its own color perception. I'm no expert and no colorblind, but I get the intuitive sense that by using the glasses for a while then taking them off, the brain goes "shit, things looked WAY better with the filters on". Given enough times to experience that contrast, it'll work itself into identifying and bridging that gap in visual input by noticing and ignoring the mixed messages. That being said, it's well below subconsciousness. It's kinda like that thing with phantom pain: a guy has gotten his arm really fucked up and after several days of it hurting like hell it was removed, but the brain simply did not register the removal of the limb. So the brain kept recalling the feeling of when it was hurting and just kept assuming it stayed like that, now that it's not getting any new sensations to say otherwise... So the armless guy had this neverending pain in the arm he didn't have for like years. Some brain doctor then figured by mirroring the guy's other arm, they could fool his brain into thinking he's receiving new sensations from his missing arm, and his brain pulled a full hardware rescan and realized the arm was gone. The pain went away instantly. House had an episode with a more dramatic version of that, but the same gist applies. The brain is weird, and apparently there are methods to hit the restart button on it. I do believe the glasses do something similar to the mirror, just slapping the brain into reassessing its inputs.

I'd say it just follows logically from neural network schema (or I should say neural networks follow from our brain's logic :P ). A neural network (A.I. / Computer Stuff) doesn't actually learn based on what it can see but what it interprets. It looks for patterns and then begins to associate names and definitions to those patterns. Neural networks are based on actual brain anatomy and function, so our brain does the same thing. You probably have never seen a green cat, but Trevor probably thinks orange tabbies look pretty green. Using the glasses, he probably can begin to tell that cats aren't normally green, so the brain can begin to interpret cats as more red by default because it gets conditioned to. But if you just take a close-up shot of the cat such that you can't tell it is a cat, Trevor would probably no longer be able to tell the difference, glasses or not. Context is key when it comes to identification. The association of patterns, such as "cat + orange = normal" versus "cat + green = not normal" is what changes, not his brain's ability to filter out light. Remove context and his ability to seen the new color will go with it. The brain actually has a hard time blocking input. Interpreting it, however, is the greatest strength of the brain. I'm reminded of a test where people were shown the Mona Lisa and asked to spot anything strange. The majority said it just looked like the Mona Lisa. What they failed to notice is they put a UFO in the background. Pretty blatantly, too. The point of the test is to show that our brains actually take shortcuts when viewing something we've already seen. It is less taxing on the brain to recall something from memory than to actually interpret something new, so it goes ahead and just throws up in your mind what it saw the last time it saw the Mona Lisa rather than actually showing you what your eyes see. Think of it like a website caching a web page. Sure enough, your brain actually caches what it sees in the same way, with the exception being that you can't clear your brain's cache using Ctrl+Shift+Delete. Instead, alcohol is the easiest way to clear human caches. Bleach can too, but it also removes your cookies, passwords, and uninstalls your browser along with it. You can train your brain to translate things differently, but it will still receive the input in full - but it might not associate the input. If you listen to the same song every day it doesn't mean you are automatically going to learn the words and can sing it without the music playing. But if the music is playing, you probably would be able to sing along. Again, your brain did learn the words but, without context, it doesn't know how to access them. That's the difference between Subliminal and Liminal (screw you spellcheck, that's a word!). Subliminal means it's stored in the back of your mind because it isn't substantial enough to be sorted right here right now. Liminal means you noticed that branch in the forest so now the lion is chasing you you know to jump over it. If you learn the words to the song, you have to actively learn them, not just listen to the song a lot. You have to keep them in the front of your mind, without context, so you can remember them as essential rather than simply as a reference. So yeah, Trevor needs to train his brain to look at different objects and remember what colors they usually are. Then his brain will cache that information and recall what it saw the last time he saw it with the glasses rather than what he sees through his eyes. It still won't do a thing for him guessing those numbers without glasses, unfortunately, because there is no context on those tests aside from the font style of the numbers. He isn't seeing more light, he is actually seeing less, as the lenses can't produce light. They block the extra green so his red cones aren't overwhelmed by it. That also goes for anything else he hasn't seen before, too. Without the glasses on, if you show him a red pen in a shape he hasn't seen before versus a red pen he has seen before (once with the glasses on), he probably would say they are different colors despite the fact they are exactly the same color (the cases anyway). Give it enough time and he might claim that the color of the pen he's seen before is changing until he, essentially, has re-cached the pen and lost the association he built up. Sad to think that you could spend so much time to see something in a different way only for it to be taken away like that. Well... This is an essay, huh? Might as well post it out of replies so if anyone is interested they can read it - what poor sorry fools they may be... Crap.

Fun fact: your cone cells (the ones that detect colour) have a higher threshold for the intensity of light it takes to cause nerve signal propagation in the cell than your rod cells (the ones that detect black and white IE overall light intensity). This means if you squint your eyes really hard (or otherwise dim the light of this video), you can get an approximation of what it's like to be colour blind. It also allows you to see the "bleed in" effect they mentioned, as different parts of the retina have different concentrations of rod and cone cells, meaning you'll only be able to distinguish the colour of certain areas at a time.
