😂 Joseph was working out on the property today with that also. He said it’s tough. We have the chainsaw blade. Cuts so smooth. We have a Stihl weed eater. Joseph loves the chainsaw blade with a quick swipe it gets 3”-4” diameter with one swipe. Good luck with the property. Let us know if you need help. Tackle it with all the man power and power tools ❤

Something to consider: Whatever you cut (but don’t uproot) will grow back-so from what I’m seeing here, you’re essentially creating more future work for yourself by all this hacking. I do a lot of clearing and removing invasive species on my land, then bring in native variety to build up diversity. For minor clearing, I carry good pruners, hedge shears, and a chainsaw. Whatever I can’t cut with the pruners (fast, no gas, can cut up to 2”), I break out the chainsaw for. Hedge shears are for mincing up tiny brush like multiflora rose so I can get to the base. Anything invasive goes. Anything native and needed (like trillium), or sparse gets transplanted. A shovel is great for uprooting whatever you can-especially prickers. A gorilla cart can haul all you need (including water) and isn’t too heavy to bump over a field. I’m a gal with weak shoulders, and do just fine. But is this case- A small bulldozer or skid steerer can crush a neat uprooted border for you in less than an hour, it will return to the earth the organic material knocked down, and you can plant a quick shorter native grass or ground cover border that can be easily managed throughout the years. After that, twice a year mowing or using a scythe to hand cut is all you’ll need for maintenance. I’d spend my time smarter, not harder, and set yourself up for years to come. It’s worth the bulldozer or tractor rental, or hiring someone to do the job. I have 2/5 of a mile pf an old loggers road on my land, but it was overgrown with young trees and there were deep wheel ruts making the road un-drivable. For $2k a guy with a bulldozer cleared the 19’ wide road of trees and flattened ditches in the clay for me. Other than grasses and other herbaceous plants, it’s not growing back an time soon, which give me time to get stone put down at my pace (one load at a time), and put in drainage trenches and culverts to make it drivable. I got a few hundred feet done last year. Every year I plan to do a few hundred more until I get all the way to the back. You got this! Love the show Best!!!☀️

Great job Jason - your strength and energy are impressive! I live in Greensboro and did battle with privet, blackberries, and mulberries for a couple years before learning their growth habits. A couple of tips: With the small trees, I cut them close to the ground, then take a large drill bit (as big as will fit the size of the trunk - a 3/4'" bit would be perfect for that 2-3" privet you demonstrated) and drill as deep as your bit will go straight down into the stump. Fill it with a couple spoons of cheap white table salt and it will likely die by next spring. If the trunks are very large and old you might have to repeat a couple times - even look for the beginning of big roots and drill into that. Now that you've got everything cropped close to the ground you can watch for new sprouts around the tree roots and repeat the salt. The berries have extensive root systems and will only die if you use a chemical on the leaves (I'm anti-chemical but sometimes will do a careful spraying just on the leaves, or you can distribute salt around all those as well, but just be careful not to use too much and have it leach into the grassy area you want to save. Then you'll be able to just mow that area a couple times early spring and summer - easy peasy :)

That one brushcutter you had at first you had borrowed, the Shindaiwa, was the best. I've had one over 20 years and love it. Shindaiwa used to have a low-kick chainsaw blade called the Tornado, but now all they have is the chisel type as well. Shindaiwa and Echo are the same company now and if you buy any Echo I believe the CS-4910 or higher, are really all Shindaiwas. That one in particular is the best saw for the money you can buy. All the Echo line, the engines are made in Japan, and final assembly is in Lake Zurich, Illinois, 30 minutes from where I live!! I also use my Shindaiwa trimmer as a pole saw, not the long extension but just the normal length of the shaft! That is also excellent for clearing land and trails which I have done a lot over the years! But that Tornado blade is great for small trees and brush. Just like that one you have, but only 6 chainsaw teeth! More teeth isn't necessarily better, just kicks more. With fewer teeth, you rev it up more and it will chop through something like an inch in diameter without even slowing down!! I'll have to try one like the viewer sent you sometime too, to see how it compares!

Jason I tell you as Americans think about egg prices it would have been nice if Sow the Land Farm had been set up with Hundreds of egg 🥚 layers the farm would definitely be in the money now especially knowing how people love home grown pasture raised eggs. Now that you have such a beautiful large property try not letting yourself get overwhelmed because I'm sure that it's all a lot to contend with but I believe from watching you and your family over the years you are going to figure it all out. Just like you said to little brother beef cow you will figure things out. Everyone in the comments might have a lot of suggestions some good and others maybe not so good. But just remember that these are only suggestions and none of us are in you or your family shoes. May God continue to bless you all with good health 🙏 growth 🙏 success 🙏 and prosperity 🙏... Jason would a tree saw, the type you would use to cut branches up higher work better for clearing tree tops, and the chain saw work for the bottom, and main trunk. Then the weed whacker tool with the saw blade or chain blade work on all the under brush? Just a thought. Ideally, I wish we had a root, and tree grubber, or a hydraulic piece of equipment to do this time consuming work. Were clearing our fence line as well, and our septic lagoon. Ideally we would like to burn but everything is too dry, plus we have a burn ban. Will you be treating your fence line with something after you clear it? Were going to use vinegar under, and around fence. We don't want to use poision because of the wildlife, and our garrdens.

Hey, I really love your channel I have a question. Are you clear cutting, as in getting rid of everything? or are you doing something like leaving the old trees behind and cutting the lower growth for grass so the animals can eat? Normally fire takes care of this, but I would not do fire as it would spread to other areas lol When its not winter, do the trees grow back or are they dead?

You're gonna be 120 lbs when you finish clearing that fence line, LoL😄, just kidding. are you gonna electrify that fence? Looks like it's about 4 feet tall. Do you think sheep will not be able to jump over that to get to all the lush foliage that will be there in the spring and summer? I know goats could leap that easily but, not sure about sheep

Hi! First of all I would like to say thanks for making such great video's, I really enjoy watching you build your own farm. I had a question about raising animals for food, do you build personal connections with these animals? (Like, are they your family?) And if so, do you feel a litle bad when slaughter day comes? I was wondering since I'd like to raise meat chickens myself one day and it kinda scares me.

Russ look up hügelkultur beds. Fill in raised beds that auto feed both plants and provide a wonderful layered organic natural compost / fungal network. We used Old logs, new logs, dead grass, hay, leaves, egg shells everything we could get our hands on. Then top dressed it with cheap top soil + a big bag of peat moss and compost. Swiss chard and bush beans grew insane in production. Had to avoid root veggies that year even though we still planted them with low hopes. Had a mix of results as the bed was new and not settled in. Year after everything took better and I assume that would continue with little effort on our part besides occasional watering on consecutive long hot dry days.
