Testing Filter Top Design & Making Modifications - Flow Bench Part 3

The last video touched base on the flow numbers of this open top filter design being lower than a closed top design on the flow bench. The closed top flowed more air on our 1 inch drop base and 14 x 3 RPC cotton filter. We could not let the subject of our last results sit idle. We went all the way down to the details to try to figure out what was causing the restriction. We pulled apart the filter and did some permanent modifications and back to back testing to show you why this doesn't work.
The open top filter is marketed as a Powerlid by Summit.

I was just having a conversation with a buddy who worked at airaid about a cotton vs paper. I have a KN filter and lid on a 408 sprintcar engine. Filters off perfect tune on the carburetor put the Filter on runs like shit. Great video, my buddy was correct after watching your video

Bummer !! I should never have given away my old Chrome top after I got my filter top. I thought the filter top might be better for my 74 Vette's (cowl induction thingy). I'm running a drop base and 3 inch K&N on a Holley 650. Thanks for the great vids.

Great finding. I have not seen anyone testing this stuff, thanks a lot. So basically these things are more for looks than flow. Makes me wonder whether the dense material + tight grid is used on purpose to not introduce turbulences from above 🤔 or to circumvent issues with the sealing 😂

Just found this. Definitely Great information. Got a new project and trying to use a lot of parts we already have.

Great test. I really like how you cut the holes in it and it made no difference. Thanks for sharing. I just subscribed to your channel. Take care, Ed.

Take the chrome lid and flip it upside-down. Since it's domed up. Maybe the dome pointing down will direct flow better.

I heard a flat base flows better than a drop-base. Instead of using used (dirty) elements, you should be using new (or cleaned) elements.

I would be trying out a flat or raised base.

Thanks for your work so far - please continue your investigation - I bought a Summit drop base and 'Open' top filter and felt that it didn't do that much for flow - would love to know how to fix it. Am space limited so looking for a solution.

You need a flat base for an open top air filter. Drop base with open top air filters don’t work.

Hello, in my F - 250 with the 460 c.i. engine I had room to double stack two K & N filters. I was pleased but had no way to verify improvements.

Thank you for commenting. I dont have much data on this right now but it could be something I try in the future.

I would be curious to see the difference in a 3 inch filter versus a 4 inch.

That is quite the flow bench for hobby purposes. I hope you experiment with some cylinder head porting. It is kinda fun. At least, I am assuming it is for hobby purposes. Nice though all the same.

This bench is for my buddies business. He does development on fuel systems for industrial engines. The hobby useage is a bonus. Our automotive minds go in many different directions and its hard to stick with one topic. No gurantees but we might dable in some cylinder head stuff, probably not in the near future.

I wonder the flow rate of the velocity stack with a 4" cloth type filter? But are the cloth filters tested , cleaned and re oiled ? DV tested the K&N while dirty and they out flowed clean paper filters.

DV does a great job. I really enjoy his videos. If i had a filter to put on i would have tested that combo. This is just what we had around. Il have to start gathering some others and k&n. I have a suspicion on a velocity stack a small surface area filter would be restrictive - its just how much.

So the K&N was way better than a paper filter, thanks.

In this one i investigated improvements on the Summit power lid. Its an open top filter that many would buy including myself due to it appearing like an improvement-paired with a paper 14x3 it did ok but with the rpc (red look alike k&n) it didnt do as expected. So far k&n has not been tested. That might be subject to change in future bench test videos

Guys this channel is amazing! 😃 Say would you be interested in doing a collaboration? Ive been doing some old school carburetor mods and have had no real physical way of treating or showing what they are actually doing. I feel like we could really teat some cool and outside the box stuff and have physical data to show for it 😁👌
