I made my bolas out of 2 @ 1" to 1/2" steel pipe reducers with caps after stringing them with 7 feet of amsteel cord tied through very small nuts to keep them from coming out. They shatter 2x4s when the weights hit at the same time. Only 2 weights on one string and thrown like a lasso with one loop between the weights & only swing once around before letting loose or you will suffer for it.

I cannot provide any sources for any of this other than me being argentinian and a long history of messing with them. With that said this is what I can tell you about bolas: 1) we call them boleadoras here. 2) there are many kinds of boleadoras other than the one shown here some had only one weight (usually stones), some had two. Their construction also varied, some weights were stones with a groove carved around them to better tie the ropes, the ones used by gauchos usually had a hide pouch to hold the weight (the rope was also made out of braided hide). The one i have has 3 weights, 1 of them is smaller than the rest and is kind of tied to the other rope holding the 2 weights, it can slide through it. 3) the kind used for warfare weren't usually the ones shown here but the ones with one weight. They would use them as one would a sling the objective was not to tangle their legs but to rain stones on the enemy. 4) on the use of the boleadoras: if you want them to really tangle someone don't throw them as shown here grab the middle weight (guess you could call it lead weight) and swing only 1 or 2 times while you aim, don't swing for too long as they may tangle and don't try to whirlwind them around for they will tangle and ruin your shot (it is kind of like using a sling). Sorry for the long comment, If there's something you want to add feel free.

@MrPrimitiveman
@MrPrimitiveman 4 жыл бұрын
The key to getting them to separate during flight is to have each line weigh differently at the ends. They will spin at different speeds causing them to separate more consistently and entangle your prey better. Remember traditionally rocks and other weights would be used. The rocks would weigh slightly differently, just enough to cause them to open up while spinning. Great content by the way I really enjoy this channel!!

It simply wont be able to capture that intense feeling of loneliness and sadness the first one did. It just felt so raw and unforgiving. I'm just not ready for someone to give me "There version of the show". Why try to improve something that many people already agree is perfect? There going to try and dumb it down for an American audience., and I desperately don't want that. And you know there going to try and give more detail to Spikes background and why he left the mafia on mars, which I don't want because you don't need it. The show was always about these broken people, individuals who cant escape there past, and the mystery surrounding Spike as a character, simply made him all the more tragic, as you never really felt you truly knew the man, or even saw how violent and sadistic he can truly be, as is hinted throughout the show. The show is really less about there past and more about them trying to forget it, or in Fey's case, remember it.

Or use an Ashley stopper knot, it qualifies as most "bulk" for length of string, Number two in line is "Celtic button knot" Much bulkier but uses about 15-20cm (6-8") of paracord depending on quality. Also MUCH mire difficult to tie, most learn Ashley stopper in few minutes and remember it, seen ppl fail to tie button knot after hours of tutoring when they try next day.

When I use bolas, I find it's more accurate and reliable to hold one of the ends when spinning/throwing; that way when you throw it tends to not be as tangled. For short range holding them by the knot and chucking sidearm works well. One trick is to aim for the feet or even the ground, since the balls will bounce around helping the chances of entangling things.

Resident Argentinian gaucho descendant here and the weights here were usually made of bone stone silver or pouches of rawhide full of lead powder And they were used usually used to hunt ostrich like birds they are also formidable weapons for duels if used as a flail and paired with a facon (long multi purpose knife) Also the middle lenght of rope should be shorter

8:38 Brian ist right, the entangling doesn't really work if you hold the bolas in the middle and have all balls clumped together. Have you tried holding one ball instead of the middle knot when throwing? It acts as a counterweight, spans the full lengths of the rope, and therefore can actually wrap around something.

You sure you're not supposed to hold it near one of the balls? I feel like that would end up giving them more separation in the air. Also, there are a ton of unorthodox weapons used in war out there that seem super effective. One of my favorites has always been the lasso. It was commonly used by nomads like the Scythians, Roxolani and Saka, they'd use them in hit and run attacks to break up tightly packed groups of infantry with their light cavalry (in addition to bows). If you think getting bola'd would suck, imagine getting snagged by one of those then dragged away from your buddies behind a horse so a bad guy could kill you at his leisure.

I used to make bolas when I was a kid (i.e., before you were born). We used lead sinkers, and after experimenting we made the three cords slightly different lengths. Alternatively - and if you're twirling them horizontally overhead, hold it by one of the weights and swing the other two; that gives maximum spread. And yes, those sinkers HURT! Aim low!

Made wrong and used wrong. Argentinian here, I've been to "jineteadas" (rodeos) where boleadoras (as bolas were known here) were used, often on cattle and horses, but also on Ñandús (South American ostriches). Besides them being, of course, heavier, the rope is supposed to be far longer than that, and you grab it by ONE of the balls, so you swing TWICE the rope length, with the other two balls on the outside of the rope being thrown. Gauchos can often throw them effectively at a 10 to 15 m range.

01:30, nope, most of the pre-colombian civilizations weaponry in the Americas was "less-than-lethal" or was made to incapacitate in order that they could take slaves without damaging them to much. They did the same in Africa, use weaponry that was meant to immobilize the potential victim in order to capture them. A dead or maimed slave is of not of much use.

10:06 Jason is laughing at being hit in the ear with the bolas... kind of strange, since just a few minutes before they referenced Fight Club... It was jujitsu, but the college didn't have any kind of insurance for it and had specifically prohibited that kind of thing... it was the best shape I've ever been in. A correctly made set is just 1 string with 1 ball affixed to each end.When preparing to throw you should never grasp the center of the string in a fist( which is why they all clustered together rather than expanding and tangling the target), grasp 1 ball in the palm and only swing the ball that isn't in your hand to build it's initial centripetal force before you throw.

The weight were/are made of stone covered in leather and the birds that were hunted with this are called Ñandu a flyless, tall, very fast runner. Also if i'm not mistaken you should grab it from one end to spin it, that way the balls would spred more.

Use an ice pick to make the hole, braided nylon rope and two tennis balls. One swing and release. For a better but more dangerous fill each ball with silicone sealant. Combat ones used wooden, metal, or stone. The damage comes from the increase velocities as the rope length decreases. Small leather bags filled with sand is an option also. The rope lengths is from hand to just above the ground. Good luck!

Nice Bolas, and managed to get them to work, very impressive. As for raycons, The sound is great, but if you want to use them for games or voice chat, don't get high hopes, the quality drops fast if you get on a VOIP call, and the latency for games is very noticeable. As for sleeping with them, your mileage will vary, I sleep on my side, and they press pretty hard into my ear when I lay down, so it probably depends on ear shape.

It’s in the swing, just half a loop over your head is all you need. The flick of the wrist at release sets it in motion.

Fun fact, most flamingos thrive in boiling or nearly boiling water all the time. Trying to bola and bite ones neck would probably get you cooked alive as the flamingos stand there all on their one leg looking at you flailing and splashing around. Lol. Also great video as always 😂😂

For the record, if you want your bola to fan out in flight, try making one length of cord slightly shorter than the rest. (Making one length longer has the same effect.) This results in the shorter cord rotating around the same pivot at a more rapid rate. That should cause additional resistant, "outward" forces to the rotation encouraging the 2 longer cords to separate. (I don't really know how to articulate what this actually does. I imagine it functions similarly to a tail rotor on a helicopter.) ALSO, you really want to grip one of weights along with the central knot. Search for "bolas throwing revisited" for a practical demonstration.

In the Rated Red video you guys referenced, it looks like the guy was holding on to the bola by one ball and swung with other two to make it spin and entangle, instead of holding it in the centre like you guys did.

I'm not going to pretend to be anything close to an expert on the subject, but I have played around with bolas similar to the ones they're using. The best way I found/stole from somewhere online is to hold one ball in each hand with one dangling. Start by swinging the dangling one behind/above your head away from your dominant hand. When it's just about straight back from you, let go of the one in your non-dominant hand. If done correctly, they should be spread out roughly evenly. Then, simply let go when you feel like it'll hit what you're aiming at. Ideally, you'll release before it's fully rotated once, as they bunch up pretty quickly. The easiest thing I can relate it to is swinging a sling overhead, but releasing on the first swing. Admittedly, this technique doesn't lend itself well to a text-only description, but you should be able to find a guide with visuals pretty easily online. Huge fan of the channel, keep up the good content!

Brian actually comes pretty close to this method at 9:02 to help you get a good idea of the motion. The difference is in holding the balls rather than the cord, and releasing at the right times.
