As a machinist/mechanic I know the threads do not go all the way to the head of the bolt. It looks like you were bottoming out the threads on the nut. If you were to put a washer on before the nut it would insure the nut wouldn't bottom out. I've seen thin sheet metal do this. Nut is tight but sheet metal isn't.

You have to clean any oil or grease off the threads for the very best bond. Loctite 680 retaing adesive is on another level, if done right it's insanely strong almost like a weld.

What do you use to clean this stuff up if you are reinstalling the bolts, cause the bolt hole is going to be gunked up with dried up loctite? if you don't clean the threads properly wouldn't it affect your torque specs during reinstallation?

I thought the point of these was not to add a ton more torque but to stop the parts loosening under vibration.

The Green Loctite is some crazy stuff, last time I used it a bearing race had been damaged by a bearing not being replaced when should have so the new bearing wouldn't stay in the race. Added some Green Loctite and waited an hour and that bearing will now need to be heated out of the part but it prevented the replacement of a $2800 roller. lol

Yeah I thought the green stuff was pretty wicked, until I worked din an engine shop and they had a magic bottle of clear loctite sauce. Not even a label on it ,that's how I knew it worked great 😂 It musta came from a distributor or something,no markings on the (similar bottle) as loctite.

Loctite thread locker needs to be applied correctly for it to achieve it best performance. Put it on clean oil free nuts and bolts will give you a fair outcome but it takes a long time to cure correctly. If you are serious about it you prime both components of the fastener , flood and assemble as quickly as possible. Loctite 7471 works very well to ensure a full cure regardless of temps. It also makes a nice quick set gasket if using 5188 or 515. Unless you have primed the surfaces with the proper primer the set strength and vibration resistance is going to be a lot less than 100% of capability. All of the compounds appeared to have not fully cured when tested.

its application error, he used a bolt without continuous thread to the head. When he torqued it, it was just torquing the nut to the head, not all the threads were meshing tight. Loctite is anaerobic, so it only sets when theres no air. Even then, 15lb is on the very low end to get good thread engagement.

@@Pepe-dq2ib In my experience the use of primer makes a significant difference and will often make up for application specific shortcomings. it will cure every time and for the full application area. Once you have tried it you will understand.

We were told by loctite representative to use primer, it sets up quicker and more solid. Also Loctite seals the threads from rust and outside contaminants. We used 270 to keep bearing shell from turning on casing and always had to heat them out. My experience with this product.

Gotta say I'd probably use bargain basement naptha instead of proprietary naptha. Makes me wonder if it'd set up faster with a CA accelerator or something.

These bolts had a shoulder down at the head, so you weren't torquing against the threads, but rather just the very bottom of the nut against that shoulder.

Nice research, I'm certainly no expert in this field but I'd assume that by not following the manufacturer's instructions and applying more that the recommended amount could cause some lower grade bolts to break upon disassembly if torque requirements are close to the breaking strength of the bolt. I'm careful to apply the instructed amount for that reason.

I use RED 271 on BIG mixers that have crazy high torque to retain big bearings in aluminum housings and various large bolts 3/4 +++ it always needs heat to come me apart The press-fit repair silver paste is also a pretty impressive Hail Mary

Is is possible to remove LOCTITE 243 residue from painted surface? I used Loctite 243 for the screws to attach black painted bar ends weights to the handlebars of my motorcycle. Unfortunately, I had some Loctite residue on my hands during assembly, which left some ugly fingerprints on the shiny black paint of the new bar end weights. Is it possible to remove the loctite residue from the bar end weights somehow without damaging the paint? Maybe with chemicals, heat or buffing?

I've never tried. A green scrub pad is my best friend for cleaning stubborn material, but it might scrape up the paint. If it was me, I'd try that with WD-40 as a lube and cross my fingers. If the bar ends have knurling or texture, it will likely rough up the edges.

Well first there is at least four types of red LocTite brand and each is for very specific uses same for Green which has 290, 294 & 638 all with different uses. As far as how & how much look at a Holly Davidson manual which will state which red LocTite & how many drops to use for each Specific fastener. So it may request two of more red LocTite types for several bolts in the same area. I was shocked just how vast their types & usage and different brands are all over the place too. Permatex, J-B Weld Perma-lock, LocTite but to mention a few.
