In this video I test out some salvaged large rifle primers to see see if they still work. Primers were removed from some .270 ammo that appears to have been wet for quite some time. The test rifle is a Zastava M85 7.62x39mm Mini Mauser.

Great video....thanks! I, too, have salvaged many primers from various ammo. As long as it is performed with care it works fine. I have never had a primer go off yet whilst depriming, either. Thanks for the interesting video.

Great video, here I was thinking I was the only one who’d do this kind of thing 😂 I use a LeeLoader base and a .17 cal decapping pin and I slowly push them out with a mallet. So far I’ve only ever had two detonate, both from the same batch of nickel-plated brass so another good thing to consider when doing this type of thing is to wear eye and ear protection and a glove. I’ve also got some corrosive primers I’ve salvaged from 1940s US and Canadian .30-06/.303 and 1950s Israeli 7.92 ammunition that I have seperate and marked as such. I may even do a video on those whenever I get around to using them.
@314299
@314299 2 жыл бұрын
I take it you push on the decapping pin instead of hitting it?
@JMorris297
@JMorris297 2 жыл бұрын
@@314299 no, I very gently tap them out rather than push them out. The two that detonated were crimped Winchester brass, I think the crimp held them in tight enough that my tapping was enough to push the anvil in the priming compound hard enough to blow it. There were another 15 or so of them that came out fine though. I did untidily start off using the press and FLS die and slowing running the handle and taking note of which primer was the good one, but that got tedious and I didn’t want the case lube to possibly affect the primer so I switched methods.

Why was the brass a write off? Just wondering, I've picked up brass that's been laying in the dirt for years and the rotary wet tumbler has always cleaned them up well. Anyway no criticism just wondering. I dig the video!
@314299
@314299 Жыл бұрын
Some of the brass was usable after cleaning, some was put in the scrap bucket as it was too heavily corroded to be safe for reuse. Wet tumbling with stainless steel pins and LemiShine certainly does a great job, but there were cases that showed pitting after cleaning and so were discarded.
