In this video, I experiment with several different stains on Poplar wood. I wanted to see the effects of different stains, some are good and others not, hope this helps somebody.

Contrary to the label directions, you should allow the wood conditioner to dry overnight. Otherwise, it will re-liquefy and mix with the stain allowing blotching to occur.

That gunstock looks great! Sort-of gives poplar that acacia/hickory 2-tone look without being too extreme. I know a lot of folks don't like those purple & green streaks in poplar, but I like 'em.

Let me echo others. This is exactly what I needed. Thanks for being clear and direct. I bought poplar for a laser project because it was inexpensive and recommended for laser work. Until I saw your video I almost bought mahogany which would have been expensive and tough to work with. Dark walnut stain on poplar is perfect for my project.

Driftwood is going to be my choice. I don’t know but I love that hidden green that comes out in pop. Then it just looks better and better as you put a sealer or poly on it. What I’ve found is the more coats of conditioner, oil, and poly the better. Only two coats max on any stain I try

Thanks, Dave! I like poplar. It's inexpensive and easy to work with. The only problem with it is hiding the green streaks. Your video gives me a few options to consider. 👍😀

Yeah poplar is bad for that, we used it a lot in a factory that I worked at. They usually stained it Dark

Great video and test! For me, I like the Mahogany and Red Oak stains the most. But, natural/naked Poplar looks excellent too when it's clear and not green.

I liked that Gunstock and Dark Walnut. Some of the lighter stains just look too poplar-esque in my view. Why stain it lightly when you could just apply a clear finish to the poplar anyway?

Poplaresque or poplarish? I agree with you, the gunstock looks best. Poor poplar, the ugly duckling of the wood world.

Thanks for the great demo! I know it certainly depends on your particular piece of poplar, but I couldn't get mine to come anywhere near that in test runs (tried a few different stains on the same conditioner and wax free shellac) Did you do anything particular to these ones (sanding, thinning the stain, stain soak time, multiple coaks)? Thanks!

Sand with 220 grit sandpaper, apply Minwax Prestain wood conditioner for 15 to 20 minutes, then apply stain for about 15 minutes, then wiped off excess. No thinning

I like tht gunstock finish great info,i was wondering about popular wood,whats it mostly used for anything ? my daughter has a backyard full of fallen popular trees I been thinking of milling.there anywhere from 10 to 20 inch diameter.

The best for Poplar is '' Klean Strip'' @ H.D. and Minwax Sedona red 222 if you put 2 coats of Sedona red 222 it will look very freaken nice and finish with Polyurethane, 2 coats . I'd tried water pre-stain, pre-stain for oil and Klean strip as a pre-stain and that was the best,I waited 24hrs before applying the stain on all test pieces. I also put instant dark coffee(boiled) and it gave it a little darkness in which it got rid of some of the whiteness and then I also did a piece with coffee and then the Sedona red and it came out very niceeeeeeeee.

if you wait 24 hrs after the prestain then the prestain is gone and wouldn't do anything. that's why you gotta apply the stain 15-30 min after while the prestain is still there 😂

the gunstock red looks fantastic.. Im thinking about attempting a waterfall edge using some master craft poplar (I have very limited tools so I cant actually face my boards myself.) and that would look really good I think.. that or maybe the gray.. Super torn. I think with something that looks very poppy to start with, it will really bring out the darker or lighter colors.

I light the Gunstock myself on several woods, the only thing about poplar, is the green streaks, stay away from the dark green streaks. And always test using a scrap piece first

Trying to gather info so I can refinish a vintage wash stand that I have stripped. The wood is a mess! In some places, it stripped quite cleanly and in other places, not so much. I was hoping to stain the cabinet dark (to hide some of my problems) and the drawer fronts more natural. This video gives me some hope that I might be able to accomplish a good contrast. If anyone reads this comment and has any advice/experience with refinishing poplar, I would welcome the help. Thanks.

Not sure if I missed it but a lot of the pieces look like they have a perfect straight line through them, did you use the conditioner on half of each piece for comparison? If so which side has the conditioner. Great video none the less. I think a lot of people are looking for poplar finish videos, other than painting. Thank you, Joe

I applied PreStain wood conditioner to all pieces. What you see is a piece of painters tape, to separate the boards.

No I noticed the tape between each color, but a lot of the colors especially the gray look to have a clean vertical line half way through, no tape, must just be the grain of the wood. Thanks for reply

I'm getting the impression that most people don't like the green color that may emerge in poplar wood. I'm actually thinking about staining the poplar shiplap board wall in our rec room. Now I'm reluctant to do it if most people won't like it.

Love your video!!! I have a little question....I make little wood signs and when I don’t sand them I just apply the wood stain and it takes it amazing in just one coat, but one day for some season I sanded one board (poplar) with a p80 and, I did it really heavy cuz my son covered all with finger paint (sigh) so “I tried not to waste a whole board), thing is...when I applied the stain it seemed soooo pale, I probably spent 7 coats and still looked so pale. What’s going on? What number of sanding should I have used??

I sand all my boards, with 220 sandpaper. But sometimes with poplar, I have seen some boards not take the stain good.

Victor Vek Yes alot of people do, but I like the Gunstock finish. Just need to apply several coats. I used to work in a factory, we made bedroom furniture, some poplar and stained it to look like Cherry.

Natural poplar looks best. If you want walnut, go and buy walnut. If you want oak, go and buy oak. If you want cherry, go and buy cherry. Why would you ruin poplar to make it look like something it isn't?

I see your point, but everyone can't afford the prices of hardwood. Plus poplar is at most home centers. Cherry and Walnut are hard to come by in most parts of the country.
