I have two dvd recorders which I use for pass through , Panasonic DMR-ES10 and ES15. Both work great and are acknowledged by a lot of video groups as the best thing other than dedicated TBC equipment which are now selling for ridiculous amounts.

I picked up a used ES15 for cheap and find that its output is dark, even after applying the recommended input and output level settings. Even when set to LIGHTER and LIGHTER, the image is a little darker than captures made without it.

My go to decks are the JVC DigiPure units. The line TBC corrects about 90% of issues I have with tapes and it does an excellent job of cleaning up chroma noise inherit to the format. If its a tracking basket case, out comes the Panasonic AG-1980 or the JVC SR-VD400 DVHS. Both have their pros and cons with regards to tracking and line TBC function. For full frame TBC use, all decks are passed thru an AVToolbox AVT-8710, mostly to prevent frame drops and keep the capture cards happy. The JVC DVHS deck has a built-in full frame TBC in combination with the line TBC.

@@RLFLOWS Yes, they do, but if they are replaced, they are pretty reliable. I wouldn't recommend buying one where all of the TBC board, front board, and head amp caps at a minimum have been replaced unless you can replace them yourself. The TBC board in particular is annoying due to something like 25 SMT caps.

There are two kinds of TBC's. The kind used in DVD recorders is a frame-based TBC. It will fix skewing and jumping. But the real deal is a line-based TBC, which makes all the lines in each individual field start at the right time, which does what the frame-based units do, and also makes the picture considerably sharper by eliminating line jitter.

@@EmeraldCoastDigitizing Probably! I just bought a Panasonic AG-DS840 playback deck, with built-in TBC. I'm waiting on the capacitors for the video board to come in so I can recap it, and then I hope it's going to be a serious transfer deck. Its internal TBC can even be adjusted from the front panel to correct timing errors between the chroma and luma signals, eliminating the color shadows seen in a lot of VHS transfers.

I think you got them mixed up. DVD recorders (and some S-VHS units from prosumer lines and above) uses line TBC, which is okay for some minor stuff. Frame TBC is the one that costs an arm and a leg (and super rare) and is usually used to address some of the heavier issues. This device falls on the former, and makes sense since Shawn was able to find it rather easily. Personally haven't tested a frame TBC and I'm wondering if it can fix severe tape damage. Already gone through several line TBC/TBC-ish units and while they do the job admirably, some tapes are so bad it makes you wonder if those $2500 devices can pull some magic.

Not gonna lie, the the SKNET did way better than I thought it would based on the reviews out there. It appears to be basically an external line TBC which aren't too common outside of the line TBC-like effects you can get with DVD recorder passthrough or camcorder passthrough. It's likely that most of your camcorders have pass through line TBCs that will probably result in a sharper result than the DVD recorders. In these tests, the SKNET has way less flickering in the hat color compared to sample 3. Since you used different VCRs for each test, there's some extra variables there (and the original tracking is probably one variable). To me, the SKNET image is definitely sharper than all of the rest - looking at the restaurant sign above the boys' hat. SKNET did have some slight residual vertical flicker issues that a frame TBC would usually remove. Better test would probably be a JVC/Panasonic with a built in TBC that is enabled versus disabled and with and without the SKNET in the chain to show which line TBC works better or to show if they are roughly equivalent. That way your only variable is which TBC is in use. I agree that it is tricky to finding tapes that display different problems to the greatest degree to emphasize which TBCs handle which issue best. With most external (frame only) TBCs, the goal is to avoid dropped frames and/or vertical jitter rather than to improve the image quality. Problem is you can't really measure for dropped frames with the Elgato to show how well they are working at preventing dropped frames. The elgato is pretty tolerant to time base errors to begin with I believe, so it's probably not the best capture device to emphasize TBC differences.

2 and 4 looks good maybe do a pass through on all, also (tip) when working on vcrs and dealing with capacitors a good ESR meter is a good tool to have and/or a component tester. along with a multimeter, just looking at a capacitor or component is not going to always help diagnose electronics. you dont want to waste time and money on guesswork.

I agree. 3 would probably be my deliverable one. The flicker on the hat on #3 actually went away on another player that I tried when I did the final capture. It’s kinda crazy. Some tapes will play great on any machine you put them in. But there are ALOT of tapes with shitty recordings to begin with that will just never look amazing.

@holgergundlach4797
@holgergundlach4797 Ай бұрын
@@coondogtheman No they wont, those professional players are usual not good for tapes recorded on consumer gear. They are good for professional recorded tapes on professional decks. Also often the professional decks have a lot wear on them as those was used by professionals with often thousands hours of runtime. For problematic tapes I've best experience with JVC prosumer decks with line TBC + full frame TBC. In general use decks with line TBC or 2nd best S-VHS decks without TBC + DVD recorder in the chain like the Panasonic DMR ES-10/15 and then a full frame TBC. But even if you can't afford/find a full frame TBC you would do better than all those companies already with a S-VHS deck + DVD recorder + proper capture device. And never use Elgato.. They are bad in deinterlacing, they are bad at details and they compress video and audio with low bitrate. Also always use svideo.
