Schrade is quickly becoming one of my favorite blade companies. They are generally extremely affordable for what you're getting but the performance is comparable to much more expensive products. Also, great video Skall, objective review, only facts, while still being entertaining.

Good to see Skall getting his daily arm exercise plundering the forest of all it's dead bits. I can't imagine how much harder life would be for all those tree serial killers if you weren't around to dispose of the corpses! Skall is a true Woodland Hero! Huzzah!

I think the quicker finish wear might be correlated with the fact that you struck a charred piece of wood :) that kind of stuff you could use for polishing (and do a terrible job), but properties of charcoal are different from wood. I've had one of these for a few years and it's surprisingly good. If you were trying to assign it double duty to cut down on gear it is a good machete, great chopper, decent knife, and a decent hatchet. Not an axe substitute, but honestly I haven't met a good axe substitute. However this blade with a good silky saw could probably handle just about anything you'd need for a camping /hiking trip. I usually go silky saw, Morakniv, and favorite hatchet. But if I really need to cut weights and space this and a mora or a silky would be just fine.

For the price, Schrade makes a good product. I've got a Schrade pocket knife and kukri and I am satisfied with both. The blades are lower grade steel, but heat treated with a good balance of toughness and sharpenability. The handles are comfortable and the kukri sheath is very nice. The recurve blade can be a bit much to sharpen in the concave area, but there are tools available for that.

I'm in the market for a good machete for carving my way through underbrush. This one looks like the best I have seen and still have a good defensive feel. I am looking to have a reasonable tip for thrusting, just in case I am surprised by an aggressive animal of sorts an wielding wildly may not be the best option.

I have this blade and love it but also found it likes to stick in the wood , I sanded off the coating just on the belly and tip of the blade it cuts better and doesn't get stuck as much also if you melt the top of the sheath where the blade goes in you can improve the retention of the sheath .

That's why well made axes for things like felling and competition have convex geometry, not flat. You really ought not be using it as an axe at all. Anything it can't cut through with one stroke is where an axe should be used if at all possible. That's why the expensive custom version has convex grind instead of a flat one. Same weight, same balance, stronger edge, doesn't stick, high end super steel, neoprene rubber handle like competition choppers have. They're built to do heavy chopping. These aren't. The version in this video is a pre production sample with a different heat treatment on a different steel(3Cr13MoV- the Mo and V make a big difference in performance, especially with the right heat treatment). Whereas the production model has a very sub optimal heat treatment and a lesser basic 3Cr13 steel. IE you shouldn't expect nor will you get the performance from a production model you see in the original few test reviews that feature preproduction samples. So the they shouldn't be expected to do what you see these pre production samples do in these videos. They just aren't the same thing.

I have a S.O.G kukri machete from their SOGfari series its pretty nice honestly, though I dont enjoy the serrated back, I plan on getting a new one but the one I have now is pretty good for small trees and brush. Looks impressive even if it can't cut mature trees better than an axe. The spine looks bit more substantial than the standard machete, so it has some extra heft for thickets of saplings. Hopefully it's priced as reasonably as the parang they sell.

That looks like it would be a fun knife to have with one when champing. Maybe not so much for a survivalist outing but for the sheer entertainment value of chopping ( well I enjoy chopping anyway). I will be getting this knife when I get the finances to do so. Unless you want to mail it to Alberta for another Canadian to do a review video with it? (Canadian shipping costs make it not the best suggestion, I know).

this is very much like my work knife. only the one I use is a little shorter and is a bit wider at the belly of the curve as having a thicker spine (which is probably why mine seams to chop better) I think the problem you're having with carving is due to the way the blade is sharpened. what i've done with mine is sharpen the part closest to the grip to a finer edge for carving and such, while having a thicker profile on the mid part to provide a stronger edge for chopping, and a fine edge near the point for tasks like cutting fabric among other uses.

+skallagrim I think it would be cool to see you undergo a video series based on the following premise: Set a specific dollar amount for 2-3 blades that you would use. These blades (for different videos on each subject) would be based on the subject of an adventure. These adventures could be like this video involving the outdoors, HEMA practice, HEMA competition, HEMA home training, or cutting. Let me know if you think this is a worthwhile idea, I think you would do a great job of it.
