Today I am testing out the viral home wall art hack with spackling a canvas for home renovation and art. There are a lot of artists who use this newer medium to make some great textures!
This canvas or wood panel artwork is a cheap and affordable way to make home decor for your house. Try this viral idea and hack to make textured neutral wall products.

We're not at all surprised that such a skilled artist would achieve great looking results with this technique! In terms of durability, we think the wooden panel has a better chance of resisting cracking and detachment over time compared to canvas, but we get that this was really more of a decorative craft than "for the ages". Isolated chunks of rigid impasto generally attach better than a continuous, thick film, so we think small applications like those petal shapes have a good chance at long-term retention. Roughing up the panel with sandpaper could possibly help, too We can't help thinking, though, that the same technique would look spectacular in Acrylic Modeling Paste!

If you try this again, I'd recommend trying a wet sponge (not a scrubby sided sponge, but just a solid sponge-sponge) after the joint compound has dried to smooth out the textures you don't like. It helps to keep the dust down and results in a smoother surface! I love your green rainbow piece!

It does look like a lot of fun! One thing I have done that is also fun is buy a big thrift store frame, paint it white and get one of those disposable cake decorating kits with the tips and bag and load it up with this stuff and decorate it like an old fashioned elaborate frame.

This is ALMOST a fresco piece. Fresco is when you apply paint to “fresh” aka still wet plaster as you are making the painting or by mixing in powdered pigments into plaster and painting with those. It creates a matte finish and lasts a long time because the paint is basically sealed within the plaster. I highly recommend checking fresco painting out if you enjoyed this!

I make the petal texture art kind and have an Etsy shop, and joint compound isn't the right stuff for it. Needs to be texture paste or modelling paste as it holds the shape better plus is compatible with acrylic paint. Mix the acrylic paint with the modelling paste before using the palette knife to apply it to the canvas.

I’ve done this with a few pieces and found that with the background, I like it best to go lots of different directions when spreading. This way it feels natural. When you have uniformity, such as stripes, it really draws your eye. So a more chaotic approach actually doesn’t distract as much. Then once your happy with the background, just make your design right over it. I also completely cover the edges in plaster if it’s not going to be framed. Then I paint the whole thing so you don’t notice any areas I might have missed with the plaster. Just some tips I found work for me!

I'm glad this 'trend' is popular! I met an artist 6 years ago on the west coast of England who had been using this sort of technique for about 30 years to create some fantastic artwork. I wish I could remember his name but it really created such an amazing effect to his work. I think a lot of artists might find a new fondness for painting with these techniques! I loved seeing what you did with it

I think you can color the spackling either with acrylic paint or powder pigments before you "paint" with it (especially for something like the hydrangea petals). Or try a base coat of the plain white, then put blobs of the colored mix as a gradient on the edge and smear it across to do the rainbow style. It looks like a lot of fun to experiment with.
@carveylover

So beautiful, I love all of these! The canvas might bend and cause the dried compound to crack, hence the wood panel. I've tried this back in the early 2000s with some leftover spackle, and I absolutely loved how acrylics turned all pastelly, muted shades on the porous surface. Now, imagine a dash of gold leaf on these for contrast...

Cake decorating supplies have scrapers with textures you could try. A long metal ruler might be enough to make a more even single top so the areas you don't use texture on are flatter.. Also, You might like making "paste paper" which is kinda similar and used often for end papers in book ends. To me, it is really cool seeing this video, because as Birthday and Christmas gifts my brother's family got me acrylic painting supplies to try, since I have mostly done, graphite, charcoal, and colored pencil art. I have been thinking of trying paper machete, or paper clay, or joint compound to make the art textured/3D. Thanks for the video!

Love it. Just a couple of thoughts (I’ve not tried it), but the large trowel with the castling/squares on, why not use the straight edge for smoothing the plaster. Also, so long as you go wider than the area you want flat and smooth, you only need to get this area perfect before making your lined areas. To clean your tools, wipe of as much as possible onto news paper or kitchen towel, the you can then wash your tools in a bucket and tip it on the garden. Tiny amounts may be okay down your pipes, but it would be a pain if the get blocked so it’s best not to.

1) Sanding with a random orbital sander, works like wonder if you try and get the top surface absolutely smooth and flat BUT do it outside and wear a mask. 2) Experiment with tainting it with paint and pigments. 3) You can actually sculpt it once it dries.

Another possible path I think for the "petals" one are floating petals in a body of water. You know how in SEA/South Asian films there's usually a scene of a river surrounded by vividly colored flowering trees and their petals flow and float on the water surface. Then the surface of the water is painted different shades of blues to emphasize depth with maybe even a fish or two and some rocks showing from the depths.

For cleaning: most joint compounds break down easily into water (its called 'mud' by a lot of builders for this reason and a couple others,) but I wouldn't clean anything down an internal sink. I'd recommend doing the washing outside, it's where I wash mine out. Your tools will survive the cleaning process regardless, but most buckets get tossed once done.

Best to clean the tools outside with a hose. Or at the very least clean in a bucket of soapy water and let everything dry out. For the bucket either let the water evaporate over time, or if you are impatient, screen through a cheese cloth as you pour the excess water outside in the yard then with the remnants let dry and throw out. You want to throw out the dried compound. It can block up your drains.
