As a talk show host, who is going to speak on a topic with two sides I think you should be able to place yourself on the fence? If you lean towards one side it will instantly place a bias point of view, because the middle man (you) is leaning towards one side But in saying this, this is a good topic to speak about and I loved the different perspectives you guys were able to touch on. Keep it up team! Look forward to the next. Regards

Some of us are still waiting on that someone. It doesn't really matter who. For some Island girls...if a guy can make you laugh, then he's the one. I pretty much have that mentality.

Very interesting and entertainig conversation. Thanks for taking the time to share your views and thoughts. As far as I know, I'm full Samoan and very proud of it. There are feelings that interracial marriages amongst our people is watering down our bloodline. I tend to look at it as spreading our blood throughout, which is a good thing. The more of us around, the better! Be proud, be humble and always compassionate to all you encounter. Soifua.

this is really cool, tbh if any of my brothers came home with any woman the main thing i expect from them is respect, respect to our family, culture and elders. straight up, and i think the reason why its such an issue when brothers bring home white girls is because STEREOTYPICALLY they don't understand our ways and traditions... in saying that they can learn...

Why does it hav to be a race thing. I feel when island girls get angry about island guys dating white chix like does that mean they think they themselves can only date island guys? I am half cast i know pple hav their preferences but it doesn't need to reach a level of jealousy and competition. As long as we continue to see ourselves as colours white brown yellow instead as New Zealanders we continue to segregate society. I think a major influence is who we surround ourselves with. If you don't have a very diverse group of friends, colleagues, family etc its easy to see why pple would think this way

I agree ,it doesn't matter what race ,I'm a full Samoan and married to my kiwi wife for 25 years now. I think whoever you decide to spend the rest of the life with and whatever race, and from your heart, it doesn't really matter what others think.we all human at the end of the day.

The history of the world is based on co-mingling, mixing, combine cultures. No such thing as a "pure race" anywhere. Divide and combine is what created the world. It's just the natural way of things. People overthink interracial dating.

Interesting because my mum is pakeha/palangi/white and my dad is Maori and they both don't see colour they recognise and respect each others up bringing. Also because of the way they brought me up and where i lived (in asia) the boyfriends I had were one Bangladeshi and another Korean... and I had a korean friend say "well I can see your definitely not racist" lol she and many of my other asian friends didn't see anything wrong with it... but i guess it was normal since i went to an international school and a lot of people were dating different races i had an indian friend (a girl) dating (still is dating i believe) a half Finnish and Chilean guy!... i mean how awesome and interracial is that

Gee, this is a really raw conversation. The social construct isn’t as intense as it was when people were frowned upon for hooking up out of their ethnicity. 30 years ago it was still pretty much frowned upon but today people don’t care who is with who. The issues are more related to bigotry within family groups of those associated!

you know I never really thought about my Samoan friends as brown. I know about the Samoan culture. My spiritual parents are from Samoan culture, I agree about the culture difference. But white is not all the same.

many people dont see colour-just thier ethnic and cultural background. Colour is what Americans are obsessed with. I know this is gona make all poly girls upset but the reason why islander guys like other races especially palangi/europeans is 1. they are more physically attractive than poly girls 2. Too many big poly girls around especially in Auckland 2. there is too much baggage, competition getting to know or marrying into a islanders girl and her family. Non islanders-there is no expectation on you especially palangi families. If you come from a poor family, they wont give a shit. All that matters to them is that you treat thier daughter well and make her happy.

Colour is not the context, colonialism is, and everything mentioned is very much a part of the colonial framework of which colorism (the value of a person based on their proximity to whiteness) and cultural imperialism (the value of a person based on how far they have assimilated to the dominant culture) are very much a part of. I know how to read, but more importantly i know how to analyze and think and your comments exhibit much self hate.

EJ Ioane I'm a Polynesian women who would like to say there is a real arrogance in our Polynesians that has become toxic. And that is we've become internally racist. It saddens me that some people have made a conscious decision based on your specific reasons to date outside the culture. Your justification is typically known as constructed institutionalised racism. There's no real meaning besides it was formulated on the basis of fear of a culture which has now become influential and normalised. If I had a family member like this, I would be so ashamed to call them my family. Cause what you're basically saying is your ashamed!

I think its important to consider how in society, the media, the women that are shown and that are popular are majority white women. Remembering how sexualised and contrived these images of women are and how those images effect us all as we grow and come into our sexuality. when you love someone appearance only plays so much. but as for initial attraction, a lot of what we find attractive that CAN be manipulated HAS been by society. At the end of the day I support any relationship that is healthy and loving no matter who they are but I would be lying if my first thought on seeing a white girl and any man of colour is damn, don't white girls have enough privilege and advantage? do they have to take our men too? but I think that is less on mixed couple thing and more of an overall inferiority complex POC have with white people (probably more of a chick thing too)

Culture and race are two separate issues - what's more important? To maintain your culture or your race? You may be with someone of a different racial background but who works hard to retain your culture with you, and chooses to pass it down to your children - and you can be with someone of the same race who loses their culture and chooses to pretend to be American.
