As a mix of European, Polynesian and Asian descent I have faced racism both in New Zealand and in one of the Polynesian islands too, to the point where some of my relatives don't even associate with me just because I am what some may consider I should not ever been born...like ..I have faced racism from all sides so it kinda of sucks to be a mixed race because seriously sometimes I wish I did not understand what some people are saying behind my back... but then again thats their problem I am gonna just use these experiences and try to help those facing racism from all cultures because I can relate at almost all levels..somebody even came up to me and asked if I am Chinese ...I am part Filipino so I was so shocked someone can label me straight away and ask me to translate Chinese paper for them......

Same applies to me too. I'm a mix of European and Asian descent. I don't belong in NZ and I don't belong to the Asian country where half of my relatives are from. Relatives in both countries have disowned me. People say that they wish they were mixed but they are lying. It's better to be European only or Asian only. But it's better for me to live in that Asian country than in NZ because NZ is so incredibly racist.

A very informative discussion. I am not sure about racism in new Zealand but I am a South African of mixed descent which is classified as coloured in SA.I heard that the new Zealand gov encouraged people to marry across racial lines to get rid of the Maori question and their land claims.I am 72 yres of age and lived thru apartheid and fought against it. Today we are into democracy for 26years and now you still have apartheid. Our so called government still have the race classification act on the statute which was the cornerstone of apartheid. It is fans the flames of racial oppression.

I think, as long as people don't associate a behavior with a group of people, we can avoid the racist issue. Myself, being Samoan, I've heard older generations in my family perpetuating that idea of marrying a non-Samoan in hopes of bring about pretty babies, or eliminating pressures from fa'alavelaves. Sad because I believe we are all beautiful, in our own way. And, as for fa'alavelaves, I think there is a way to control that pressure, as a family. Fa'asamoa is all about looking out for each other, you can't take it away, but you can be reasonable. Manuia le aso.

Rascism is alive and well in NZ ... There are pockets of outright rascist white people (especially in Lower South Island) but its not just a white on non-white thing! I've seen so many different racial groups talking smack about every other race as well as the whole racial supremacy attitude where different groups believe they are better than other ethnicities or talk down on other racial groups! Honest dialogue on this topic is what is needed ...

Australia and Canada I can understand, but NZ has no excuse and the truth is the Labour Party could have produced one several times but perhaps the racism is hiding under their roof the most ... oh well we may never have one at this rate ... NZ is currently a racist country and the world knows and sees it ...

If those declaring New Zealand as a non-racist country would kindly watch "I, Too, Am Auckland", then I think some fresh perspective would challenge those ideas. As described in this video, "covert" racism is a huge factor in New Zealand. Despite 'race' not being scientifically meaningful (there are no biological factors that determine 'race'), it is a social construct designed to benefit the dominant social group, as well as categorise and undermine 'minorities' - and can have very real, harmful effects. Please be aware of your everyday behaviours to make a conscious effort in helping to minimise these impacts on others. Comparing 'levels' of racism to more extreme situations elsewhere does not exclude the fact that racism is still prevalent.
@patientchick898

No one should abandoned their culture or their roots to be accepted by a certain group. We all just need to accept who we are, that migration happened hundred of years ago and be respectful to one another. Diversity need to be celebrated not avoid. We all can live in harmony when we understand and accept that diversity is what makes life more colorful.

Though I agree that bad things have happened; I do not agree however that we should be racist back, 2 wrongs do not make it right. Martin Luther King did not fight racism with racism. He did not fight evil with evil, he fought evil with good. Their are racist people but do I think the system is inherently racist? No. The bill of rights applies to all people brown, white, black whatever you are. The 2IC in government is Maori.

Josiah Being racist back became a thing now. Especially with the whole COVID situation people started being racist to asians. That's why I don't really support BLM since they're being hypocrites saying "stop racism" then ended up saying "fuck Asians." Not just the BLM community but middle eastern's as well. They were treated like "terrorists" and now had the audacity to be racist to asians. At the end of the day if you're racist, I don't fuck with you. There's nothing you can do if their mentality is like that.

Destiny Racism as well will prevail as long as there are certain groups in a privileged social and economic position. I come from an island where there's diversity , but we have been mixing for centuries and while still prejudice prevails, we know how to live in harmony, you can find all shades of color in a family and that's one of the amazing things in my society, the color of the skin has become irrelevant, so that it's possible to accomplish but as long as huge social differences exist racism will stay more alive than ever. After living abroad for many years I thank every single day being born in my island.

The decendants of the european colonys who came to Nz know the answers concerning rascism in this country because they brought it here ..however the shame and absolute arrogants even ignorance of these people has far more consquences if they were to share there secret combinations of hate greed and dominion over the indigenous peoples of this land .. they forced their culture , laws and ways upon maori .. and punished those who resisted .. today our people fill there prisons .. and made sure we never reached our potential in life .. instead they caned us or strapped their ways into us at school ... and introduced their drink and drugs upon us ...all designed to make us look like no hopers and scum not worthy enough to be looked upon let alone respected ... unyet today the young people are well aware and a powerful humble diverse generation in all cultures races and creeds ..they will lead the way to ending rascism on New Zealand and the old ways will fade into history and for the sake of peace and harmony remain there. However heres the irony of all this .. i have more european ancestry in me than maori ..but back then i was caned at school for declaring i was 3/4 cast european which in my eyes made sense and was the truth .🤷‍♀️

So most people here will accept you the spirit of aloha (love) is very visible here.i am cookislands samoan German and I have never experienced racism here perhaps having a good attitude helps and treating people with respect irrespective of race remember this their is good and bad in all races.

I don't think anyone means what they say nowadays. I've never met, nor do I know anyone who's met someone who genuinely thinks that they are better than someone because of their race, or discriminate against people based on race. New Zealand has so many different cultures and embraces all of them. We definitely say some racist shit from time to time, like how bad drivers are usually asian and stuff like that, but no one actually means it.

That debate would have some basis if Pakehas could talk about their being discriminated against by the minorities. Political correctness has a tendency to forget racism is bidirectional.

Dear Fasitua Amosa, 'Aborigines' is a racist statement in itself. The politically correct term is 'Aboriginals'. Then you say 'Half of them are half cast anyways'.....Come over to Australia and see if that offends any of our indigenous population. Get educated then get opinionated. *Face Palm*
