Tex Williams was born on August 23, 1917, in Ramsey, Illinois, and he passed away on October 11, 1985. He was an American country and western musician, singer, and songwriter who gained fame in the 1940s and 1950s.
Williams began his music career in the 1930s, playing with various western swing bands, including the Spade Cooley Orchestra. He eventually formed his own band, the Western Caravan, which became popular in the Los Angeles area.
Williams is best known for his hit song "Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette)," which topped the charts for several weeks in 1947. The song, which was written by Merle Travis and Tex Williams, was a humorous take on the dangers of smoking, and it remains one of Williams' signature tunes.
Throughout his career, Williams recorded a number of other popular songs, including "The Deck of Cards," "Suspicion," "Never Trust A Woman," and "That's What I Like About The South." He also made several appearances in films, including "Carson City" and "The Sun Shines Bright."
Williams' distinctive baritone voice and honky-tonk sound were a major influence on other country and western musicians, and his music helped to shape the genre during its early years. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1985, just a few weeks before his death.
