Another great historical moment captured by a Sabaton song, outlining the invasion of Poland by the German military in World War 2, and the heavily outnumbered Polish holding their ground.

Polak here…I’ve studied the ‘39 campaign a bit (great book= The Eagle Unbowed) The plan was for Poland to hold for two weeks, then France attacks Germany’s lightly defended west border, followed by Britain. France and Britain wussed out. Poland held for four weeks even after the Soviets invaded on the 17th. Your analysis was spot on.

There was definitely frustration within official polish leadership about the lip service given to them by western “allies” about the potential help that was coming. The reality was the western allies were in no position to offer really anything substantial, they weren’t ready for war. They were, at least in my opinion, hoping their words of potential involvement in Poland would be received more as a threat to Germany than a promise to Poland.

@@rayceofhistory It's nice to discuss this with someone who has at least looked into the Polish vantage point. I agree France and Britain weren't ready, but I think if France had attacked the Rhineland area, even if a full invasion wasn't possible, it really would have smacked Hitler in the face and given him a great deal to reconsider. Just that little bit may have stopped him in his tracks for a while. Would it have stopped the Soviets on the 17th? I don't know.

@@detroitpolak9904 you may be right in regards to France retaliating. Hitler, by his own admission, was waiting for intervention by the west early on. Every move was like a chess move, intended not necessarily to win, but to gauge the opponent. When no move was made, step by step Hitler came to believe there would be no real consequences. That the allies would do anything to avoid another world war. And he was right to a degree, they were doing anything they could to prevent another conflict. I’m curious how things would have gone had France attacked. Because they were not in a position to fight Germany, not on any large scale. Their leadership had handicapped the soldiers too much, and in my opinion, had rested too much on their laurels from winning WW1. So I wonder what happens if France attacks. Does Hitler believe in his military enough to let them loose, to turn his ire towards the west early, or would he have just maneuvered to block France and then after Poland was taken decide it was time to strike. I’m not sure of the answer, especially with the agreement with the USSR. But no doubt it would have taken pressure off of Polish resistance, there would have had to be at least an initial response to French intervention.

Wow! Thank you for reacting to this great Sabaton song!, which resonated a lot here in Poland. I love the whole concert of Woodstock, 2012! - Sabaton was amazing and energetic and the audience was brilliant! My very first song I watched of Sabaton on the internet a year ago was Uprising (I recommend it live 2012 Woodstock) and official video is very good too. The Battle of Wizna was one of the first defensive battles, which they didn't taught me about. They just say about the beginning of ww2 like September campaigne in general. We've just had 21 years of hard times of our fresh independance and we had a lot of great officers, who, you know, after 17th Sep when Soviet Union entered , were captured and then shot into the back of their heads. There were over 20 thousand Polish officers and intelligentsia. God, Honor, Homeland - these are values that have been in the hearts of Poles for centuries. Today...? I hope too.

After they played this song the audience started singing their national anthem. Though that becomes a bit awkward because one part of it is about how they forced us swedes out of thier country, and Sabaton is swedish. It would be like if the US national anthem sang "We defeated the bloody British and drow them from our land!". Fun fact: It's the only national anthem that recalls Sweden by name, our own anthem only talks about The North/Norden.

Most Brits and Americans probably wouldn’t know this, but the US national anthem actually is in direct reference to the British attempt to destroy fort McHenry right after they had burned the White House and Congressional buildings to the ground in the war of 1812. So the whole thing is actually a reference to the US standing up to Britain, from basically start to finish of the song, although it wouldn’t be awkward if it was sung with a British band playing because nobody would actually understand the reference.

It’s just one of the historical things I collect. I actually have five back there, that one is just the only one visible in that video. But I have that one, the prussian flag, the Serapis flag, the join or die continental flag, and a Roman standard. I particularly like ones that either weren’t a real flag, like Serapis, weren’t around long, something that makes it very specific to a time in history.

It has turned out through research that it wasn’t really 40:1, those figures were propaganda, but it’s still a very fascinating story. It’s sort of forgotten or neglected that the Soviet Union invaded Poland simultaneously from the east as Germany and the Soviet Union had agreed to split Poland in two through the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact.

@@rayceofhistory According to Polish historian Dr. Tomasz Wesołowski from the university of Białystok, what stoped the Germans from advancing was mainly the Narew river and not polish resistance, since they had to build a pontoon bridge. Many of the polish soldiers were already about to flee the battlefield. A cording to Bialyostok, German losses were only 9 soldiers and the myth about the polish defence was created during the 50’s and 60’s by communist propaganda - at first in Sztandar Młodych and later in following publications that had little to do with reality. Wesołowskis research has caused controversy among many history lovers and nationalists but is accepted among most polish history scholars. There were many myths and historically incorrect “facts” that were created through the communist propaganda machine and many of them are hard to change even today, since this is what people were taught in school. Especially today when polish nationalism is growing.
