My name is Oliver, 86 years old. I have an interesting story about the Texas Chocolate Sheet cake.Years ago, I believe it was in the 60's, My Mother and Father-in law lived in the Dominican Republic. A Dominican lady made them a chocolate cake. It was delicious. My mother-in-law asked for the recipe. The lady refused, said it was a secret family recipe handed down. She finally relented and gave it to my mother-in-law. My mother-in-law gave it to my wife. My wife gave it to whomever wanted it. No longer a secret. In the 1980 I was working in Texas. My wife gave the "Secret Recipe to a very nice German lady there. Figured that's how it got introduced to Texas. To make a long story short. The Secret recipe is the same as the one you posted. It is by far my favorite chocolate cake. Love your show. I watch every episode.

Thank you for always sharing the most wonderful recipes. I’m the matriarch of our family now and I cook for my son and his family every Wednesday. (My daughter and identical granddaughters are amazing cooks) I love the two of you, you are so beautiful inside and out. I am going to make this also for bible study too! Thank you for giving credit where credit is due to Ladybird. Being a Texas gal myself, this is one of the first cakes my mother taught me to make, I was 8, I am 65 now. The only difference is that we always add a teaspoon of cinnamon to the cake mix. It makes a big difference. Everyone always asks, "What's the difference in your chocolate cake?" It is such a subtle taste that they can not distinguish what it is. Hope you try it.

I can not tell you, how much I enjoy each and everyone of your videos. You have a way about you that makes you feel like your viewers are in your kitchen while you are baking or cooking. I also love how your wife is forever reminding you of stuff. I am the same with my husband. FYI, I freeze my buttermilk in 1/2 cups and put that into a sandwich zip bag, making sure it is really zipped and than lay the bags flat and stack them. I then put them into the freezer until I need them. Depending on how much buttermilk is called for in the recipe I am making I will take one or two bags out of the freezer and put those into the refrigerator overnight to thaw and then in the morning I take the bags out and let the buttermilk come to room temp along with all of the other ingredients. I have been doing this for years. The buttermilk might separate some, but you can shake it, I usually leave it alone and add it to the recipe as is. Just so you know, I am not a new cook or baker, I started doing those things when I was 10, I am now 73. Again, thank you both for this channel. suzie

In 1999, my next-door neighbor passed away. Having recently had vocal cord surgery, I couldn't talk, but I sent this cake with my husband for the family. They raved about it and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I can understand how it could be called a funeral cake. It is comfort food and there are times when we really need some!

My sister gave me this recipe back in the 80s, when she moved to Texas. It is called Chocolate Flat Cake. The icing does not use, buttermilk, but evaporated milk instead. And, after putting the frosting on the cake, you put it back in the oven for five minutes to glaze. It makes it wonderful!

1964. The cake was originally called Gertrude Armstrong’s Chocolate Cake. Ms. Armstrong was a Texas native I believe. I’ve had the recipe since 1964, yes, that long ago. I cut it out of a newspaper, and Lady Bird was not part of the nomenclature at the time, LBJ had just been made President and she was not that well known at the time let alone have any influence. Her influence for the cake came along later after it had been published and already was a favorite. I made it immediately and to this day it is everybody’s favorite, I make it often. When I get the chocolate crazies this is my go-to for my chocolate fix. I couldn’t do without it. I was 23 years old when I first got it and now I’m 83. Wow, a lifetime of the best chocolate cake ever. I’ve talked myself into it…..this chocolate cake is on my horizon for today, can’t wait any longer. I love your all’s show, I watch every one of them and have made MANY of your recipes, both sweet and savory. Keep them coming!

I grew up in Ft. Worth, Texas. Mama made this cake which we called a "sheath" cake. She used an 11"x14" Pyrex cake pan. Not a sheet pan. We all loved this very chocolatey cake. She could throw it together in a flash and it was ready for us/and/or company. We always had Buttermilk on hand since she made Buttermilk pancakes about evert morning. We had pecans from the tree in our yard! I had such a deprived life. Veggies from our gardens. Fruit from our trees. Meat from our farm. Oh, those were the days!❤❤❤

I grew up in the midwest having this cake. I was taught to spread the frosting with the nuts in it......took forever. Now I sprinkle nuts over top of hot baked cake the frost it by drizzling the warm frosting over the nuts. Easy Peasy. Just make sure you don't cut a lot of the tip of the baggy off......you need a small opening to drizzle evenly over cake The heat from frosting and cake will help spread the frosting on its own.

I think this must be the frosting my husband has always talked about his mother making. He & his brother said you could peel the icing off the cake in a layer. I would think that's because it's kinda like fudge. I'm really excited to try this. The sheet cake looks very simple to make too. Btw, I have this same kind of shield for my KitchenAid & I love it. Love that cake. As a Texas boy, it's a favorite. I also love it warm. It's never bad, but warm is best.

I agree with you that it's great warm! I enjoy it with a big glass of cold milk. Of course, you're right that it's good at room temperature too. LOL! We appreciate you watching our videos and supporting our channel.

I enjoy your channel. My mother made this cake for many years. I buy a half gallon of buttermilk and freeze what is left in plastic cups that hold one half cup and use them as needed.

It can be hard to use up all the buttermilk if you aren't a fan of drinking it (which we are not). Freezing it like that is a really smart idea. We appreciate that you shared our ideas with us.

Dead giveaway. You, for the most part, are never short on words. But you paused for a good while after that bite. I can’t wait to try it. Thank you

I remember well! My Precious mother's dear friend always made this for church functions. I love it. Delicious 🤤

Speak for yourself Tom saying you only want a thin layer of frosting. When I make it I make one and a half times the frosting because I always want more of that delicious frosting. 😂. This cake reminds me of two ladies I worked with in the “90’s. They each had their own recipe and story to this cake. Thank you for the throwback. I love this cake.

I favor this recipe because the Cocoa powder is cooked, allowing it to 'bloom'. The ladies who spoiled me in the '60s cooked frosting, too. Good show and thank you...🇺🇸 👍☕

My mom was making this cake back in the 70s. Occasionally she would add 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon to the batter. So good. Now I need to go make one.

Yum! Haven't had this cake in years. My mom made it in 9 x 12 pan & did icing without nuts so if wanted nuts she put some on top for part of cake. I liked with nuts! Used to make for my daughter but haven't made since she moved out many years ago. Time to dust off that recipe along with some other great ones! Thanks for sharing Becky's recipe!

Every video I've noticed Tom never takes a piece of cake that's a corner. I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates the corners of a cake, lol 😅. If I could I'd only eat the center pieces 🙂🦋

He tries to cut out a piece that will photograph well for the thumbnail so people can see what the cake looks like. When it comes to something like brownies, I tend to prefer an edge or corner because I like the texture of the edges! Thanks so much for watching our channel.
