MeatEater

4 жыл бұрын

MeatEater's Senior Hunting Editor Brody Henderson heads south to hunt feral pigs with his good friend Alvin Dedeaux. The guys start their trip with a visit to the YETI Flagship Store in downtown Austin, Texas to speak at a Backcountry Hunters and Anglers event. After their short trip to the city, it's time to start looking for hogs on a local ranch. Alvin is a long-time fishing guide who just recently completed his hunter safety course, while Brody has been hunting his whole life. An experienced non-local guiding an inexperienced local is not an optimal situation, but time spent with a good friend exploring a new part of the country sounds like a recipe for a damn good time to us.

As an African American Hunter is great to see others taking to the sport. I meet alot of people in the woods, always nice and respectful but in my 6 years plus of hunting only met 1 other black guy. So hopefully this episode makes more people feel welcomed to be outdoors and enjoying nature and filling their freezers with healthy clean meat.

White hunters want more people in the Conservation efforts . Furthering other people's understanding and realizing it's not something that's supposed to be political or racial . All Humans came from hunting . And populations need to be balanced, the human diet needs more nutrient dense wild game.

@@adriancole8676 I understand where ur coming from with that, but I think the 22 minute episodes are prime. Easy to binge watch and you don't ever have to stop watching half way through an episode to go do stuff. Also easier for non-hunters to enjoy this way, as every episode is packed with amazing content every minute, and I think we can all agree that the more people that learn about hunting, the better. It'd be cool if they had like one 1hour episode per season tho, I'd be on-board with that

The very first Meateater I watched (maybe something in series 3 or 4?) I was immediately connecting because it gave a realistic connection to my own experience. Most of my hunts are not shooting stuff. Most hunts I fire the rifle once, and that is 3/4 of the way through the hunt. The getting ready, long drives bumping up river beds, scoping a place, setting up camp, dehydrated meals, camaraderie, lots of looking, walking and talking quietly, bumping the odd animal, seeing one too far away or finding the animal I want has an animal I don't want between us, the shooting on dark, the long nights, I could go on but that is what I experience. Meateater is the only show giving me what I see as a realistic experience. This episode gave me one as well, I occasionally am involved in this type of hunt, an easy hunting ground with the plan to "blood in" a new comer, with a species/opportunity that isn't a major if you blow it. This did have the complication that there was no experience on the terrain or the species, 2 large complications for taking a novice, but I guarantee Alvin is not disappointed his attitude is all about the experience. Well done and thankyou Meateater, keeping your hunts connected with actual hunting experiences.

Welcome to Texas hog hunting. Some days it’s like you can’t keep them out from in front of you. And sometimes you can’t buy a sight of one. I did notice the heavy breathing after the shot. I sure hope that was from the sheer excitement of getting a shot off and the opportunity, even a rushed shot. It still gets me. I’ve been at it for 35 years. I hope it never gets old. And glad to see y’all getting a little more of an understanding of Texas hunting. You can do it any way you like. Still, blind, stand, or over bait. And still not always get the lady.

So often on these hunter shows, I am humbled by watching the "masters". In this case, its nice to see the pros try something new and go through the learning process themselves. As a CA pig hunter, I can tell you that pig hunting is hard, and I usually get 1 harvest for every 6-7 hunt days. Pig hunting is mostly jump shooting, and rarely a spot and stalk (in CA we cannot use feeders or hunt at night) which makes it difficult to video and thus I rarely see pig hunting episodes. It was nice to see this one and I thank the team for making it. Throwing rocks into bushes is a common practice for pig hunting, but these two guys figured it out on their own. Nicely done.

I really enjoyed this episode. Being a Texas white tail hunter it was good to see someone struggle from the west and see it isn’t always easy down here. There is a huge culture of feeding all year and having your blind 100 yards away and to me that just isn’t fun. Seeing y’all have a hard time reminded me of my first time western hunting. I had no clue what I was doing and it’s totally different. I loved that y’all just tried to spot stalk all day… that’s more fun to me even if you come up with zero! Great video, guys!

This show is awesome because they don’t edit out the reality of hunting...that mistakes are made even amongst seasoned veteran hunters and you don’t always get your target. I think they also learned that Texas hunting isn’t as easy as people believe it to be. The animals are still wild and savvy.

Always been fascinated by the habit of the MeatEater group to hunt without a round in the camber. I get there's the safety aspect, and maybe it's a regional difference. If I hunted without one in the chamber where I'm at, I would have one tremendously difficult time ever shooting anything. Shot opportunities here, especially for whitetail, usually come and go in a few seconds.

Alvin Dedeaux I killed my first 3 hogs by the light of moon. If you’re hunting in thick Texas brush you’re almost never gonna sneak up on a hog in daylight. They bed down in the thick and wait until sundown. Sit in a blind with some corn in a sendero and wait. They’ll find it eventually.
@tudyk21
@tudyk21 3 жыл бұрын
@@spencerfoster9192 , it takes access to a place, but stalking and finding hogs while bedded in brush has got to be one of the most fun hunts I have done. Use your binoculars and find little patches of them in amongst the sticks. Getting with them bow range is another matter, as even though they are sleeping, they will still bust you. Especially the mature animals.

I’ve been waiting for them to post a wolf hunt for a long time. And I’ll still wait. They’re the best hunts to watch by far.

f5tornadeau Yeah can you elaborate on the ethics of hunting wolves? I see no reason to and it sounds morbid to me.

EcoCrat, wolf populations need to be controlled just like every other predator. They are nothing more than a wild dog that doesn’t know when to stop killing. Nothing wrong with taking a few out in order to keep a healthy landscape.

Best technique for hog hunting Texas is to put some sour corn out and wait in blind past dark, they’ll show up.

Can't feel bad about missing a shot like that. I made a big mistake last year and dropped my crossbow and I knew it was probably off zero at that point but I kept hunting anyways and missed a buck at 25 yards

I'm in Texas and have learned the same things about hog behavior. Best thing is to sit at a timed feeder at daybreak or dusk. I have had much success using night vision or thermal optics at night. In some places the hogs are very skittish and other places they're aggressive and come to you

Nice try but in hot/arid climates ya gotta try and stalk places where hog's might be bedded down during the day, the thickest greenest brush next to rivers and creeks is good also in places further away from water look for small depressions in the landscape anything that might offer a few degrees less heat with cover. But in most temperate places round the world with hog problems, the lil buggers are out and about 24/7 reeking havoc.

Oh man, that is hella funny to see. Not having a bullet in the chamber is not a rookie mistake, it seems it only happens to seasoned hunters. I only hunt wild boars in Germany, and in my humble opinion it is almost impossible to stalk up close to them. They are way too smart and are on the alert constantly. Thx for the vid, it was entertaining. Better luck next time!
