Texas Mom With British Accent After Surgery Isn't First To Have Rare Syndrome

A woman from Texas sounds like she's from England, despite never having traveled there. Lisa Alamia, a mom of three underwent jaw surgery to fix an overbite, and when she woke up, she sounded as if she was from across the pond. Karen Butler also has the syndrome. She is from Oregon but she sounds Irish following dental surgery. In another case, CindyLou Romberg of Washington, speaks with a Russian accent following a car collision. #InsideEdition

Foreign accent syndrome is usually related to some form of brain damage. Most commonly after a stroke, but also from head trauma, brain lesions, or even migraines. Facial surgery can be a potential cause. It's also more common in women for some reason. One of the earliest reported examples of this syndrome was a Norwegian woman who was hit by shrapnel during WWII and came out of it speaking with a German accent (which, considering the time, left her ostracized). And it's so rare (as few as 80 people worldwide have it), we don't really have a proper treatment for it yet, with speech therapy really being the only option. At the very least, it's usually temporary. When questioning people who had this condition about how long it lasted, they reported a range of 2 months to 18 years, with a mean length of about 3 years.

There’s nothing wrong having a British accent , or an Irish accent, or whatever. The issue is you suddenly aren’t yourself anymore. It’s like having your hair dyed without asking, or waking up left handed instead of right handed. A piece of you is disjointed from your perception of yourself. It’s not a “bad” thing, but it wouldn’t feel good.

There's another similar syndrome, if a person has studied even a little bit of a foreign language sometimes they wake up and and they can only speak that one instead of their first language and it takes them a while to regain their ability to talk their first language but it does come back. So I hope this lady has gotten her accent back by now if that's what she wants!

Wow, that is interesting! I had a somewhat similar thing happening to me. I'm from Romania but I moved to England almost 8 years ago and my English didn't sound British at all. Anyway after a few months of living here I gave birth to my first child (vaginally),but I had a retained placenta and had to be given anaesthesia to have it surgically removed and I noticed that during the procedure I was speaking English with a very British accent. It's like I couldn't help it, it just came out so naturally even though I was unable to do that before. It only lasted for a few hours after the surgery though. It seemed weird but I didn't think much of it back then. I assumed that it was the drugs that somehow enhanced some part of my brain or something like that. Anyway, it's interesting to see that others got that as well, and even 'worse'.

That could be really useful info for anyone researching this topic - have you contacted any neurologists about it? Ideally, look up a "neurolinguist" at some university somewhere and share the details… maybe it's to do with the anesthetics… you might contribute to groundbreaking research on how the brain processes speech production!
@ihdiinnotime

This is fascinating to me, essentially we all could have "accents" stored in our brains that can be triggered via different scenarios, this woman never learned to speak in a english accent, it was already imprinted in her brain somewhere, do we all have ALL accents imprinted that unlock depending on genes & birth location? I start going down a rabbit hole regarding simulations. Crazy stuff.

She sounds like a dozen very different British accents - this is probably something about how her mouth and jaw movements have been affected - Americans have the accents they do, in part because of the way they over annunciation and have very open and emotive mouths and faces - all of this is just learned through mimicry when they grow. Same with any regional accent. I’d say she also has hints of South African and New Zealand in there too!

@@omccc The problem for Brits with the phrase 'British accent' [which is only really used in the US] is that it tends to mean what the Brits would call either a North or East London accent or an RP accent. RP is the way Hugh Grant would speak and is a result of elocution lessons to train out his natural accent. In truth, the UK has fifty and more distinct accents. The Beatles had a Liverpool {scouse} accent, Sean Connery Edinburgh Scots, which differs from Glasgow Scots. Tom Jones Welsh, which varies as you travel around the principality, and The Derry girls have Derry accents, which differs from Liam Neeson's [kind of RP] Belfast Northern Irish [Liam is actually from Ballymena but if he spoke with that accent, even the English wouldn't understand him. A Brit can pinpoint another Brit down to within near enough 50 miles of where they come from by their accent. As many have said here, this ladies' accent has hints of what Brits would call a Black Country accent. The Black Country is an area in the West Midlands of England outside Birmingham.

I don't have the syndrome but people always ask me within the first 1-3 questions where I'm from or what's that accent. English is my third language but nobody guesses where I'm from not even people in my native Denmark. But, it's close most of the time with people guessing German or Dutch. One time somebody did guess Denmark because she had just had Danish house guests.

Balaj Amjad it's probably quite traumatic to have a different accent than you've ever heard yourself have in your entire life. Can you imagine waking up and not recognizing your voice because it has such an distinct accent from an entirely different country than the one you've spent your entire life in? Not being able to talk would be horrible and obviously worse, but it doesn't minimize this at all.

@mush2938

Dena Barton Nah, not being able to talk would be far more devastating. You can recognize your voice, because it's coming out of your mouth. It wouldn't be hard to adjust to it. Not being able to talk is far worse, and very related. If you can't talk, you would need a board or something to communicate with. You can't get someone's attention by talking to them anymore. You can't cry for help if you need it. Talking would take more time and energy. Laughing would be hard. If you just can't speak because your mouth wont be able to create the right gestures to talk, then it's pretty much the same.

Foreign accent syndrome most likely comes from a damage of nerves in or near the brain and from whatever caused the damage sometimes can cause speech processes to change. A person with FAS isn’t actually doing the accent as an impression or anything, they’re trying to speak regularly but it just comes out sounding like they have that accent that they sound like they’re speaking with.

From a neurological standpoint, this syndrome isn't actually that rare. It's just a result of a bunch of linguistic wires getting crossed in the brain, and it happens all the time with head trauma but we don't notice it because the resulting speech impediment doesn't sound like anything in particular. What happens in a few rare causes, though, is that the random mix of impeded sounds coincidentally overlaps close enough with an accent that we recognise it as sounding like one.

When I was 16, I had Jaw Surgery to correct an underbite. Thank God I didn’t know about this potential risk when getting surgery. Though I didn’t lose my accent, some of letters improved in my speech like the letter “s”. I also had to relearn how to swallow. That was the toughest part of relearning. My face was the shape of a football for months and my younger brother couldn’t stop laughing at me. Lol
