Small Livestock Working Chute~Part 3~A Stop Gate

Here’s a stop gate that I added at the back of the Livestock Working Chute that I made out of Pallets. This will allow me to stop them from backing out of the chute, when I work them. I made it from materials I had around the homestead, and I’ll walk you through the process.
This will work for either sheep or goats, and should reduce their stress… and mine. I won’t have to be wrestling my sheep as often now.
If I had bought it, this gate would have cost me almost $200. But, it cost almost nothing... because of the materials I had on hand.

In preparation for lambs you could bolt or weld a panel of expanded metal grate to the stop side of that gate. There's not enough room for a sheep to turn around but a lamb might and end up getting their head stuck in that gate. I would bolt it so you could take it on and off as needed. Plus this additional panel could extend almost to the ground to prevent nose unders. Weld a little flat steel or angle iron to any sharp edges you are left with on the pannel.

like it! For one who stutters I worked on a lot of rhymes....Peter Piper picked a pepper....etc...Should have had some rhyme with SHEEP CHUTE in school. I can barely say it now. lol. Good job. Like it a lot.

Maybe just put a 2x4 across the ground level and keep in the lambs.

How did your pallet chute work out?

Real well. It made it much easier to worm the sheep in the chute than wrestling them around. Now that I've recently sold my sheep I may take it apart and use the wood for something else. It's not large enough for cows. I'm thinking about reusing the sliding gate for my cow chute, though.
