Here's the start of a series I've been working on for a bit, It looks at the inspirations and real life equivalents for the items used by the classes of Team Fortress 2, Starting off with the Scout and going through each class.
I had the idea to make this back in April but I was preoccupied with real life stuff, sorry for the lack of content. There's not really that much to say about TF2 these days anyway sadly. At least not anything that hasn't been discuss to no end.
This is a part of a series looking at the inspirations and references for Team Fortress 2's weapons and items: • TF2 Item Origins

*Stuff you Missed:* Scattergun: Apparently since TF2 was released, in-game files contained unused sound clips labeled "scatter_gun_double_shoot.wav". Eventually, the Force-a-Nature put these sound files into use. Force-a-Nature: The name, unsurprisingly, is based off of what Scout calls himself in his "Meet the Team" video. Shortstop: The name is based off of a shortstop, which is the fielding position between second and third base in baseball. Soda-Popper: Originally (and by coincidence), concept art originally depicted the gun being equipped with can of Bonk! underneath the barrel. Backscatter: The gun was submitted to the workshop under the name "The 3lb Trigger" _(sic)_ Lugermorph: The description refers to a reoccurring joke in the Sam & Max series: namely, _where does Max keep his gun?_ C.A.P.P.E.R.: The name is an acronym for "Captain's Advanced Pulsetron Particle Electromagnetic Raygun". The term 'C.A.P.P.E.R. also refers to a euphemism for the act of shooting someone. Bonk! Atomic Punch: The cosmetic "Bonk Leadwear" states that: _"In 1792, Italian physicist Alessandro Volta invented the battery by mixing zinc, ammonium chloride and molten salt together. In 1932, American soft drink magnate Theophilus Bonk added sugar to this mixture and invented Bonk Cola."_ (It should be noted that Volta actually invented the what would eventually become the battery in 1800.) Crit-a-Cola: Apparently, the weapon was designed and made literally the day before it was released. Mad Milk: According to an old promotion image, the Mad Milk apparently is made up of cow milk...infused with thermonuclear radiation. Bat: These originally had a logo for the respective teams (RED and BLU). Holy Mackerel: All of these weapons have the item level 42, which is a reference to the answer for everything. Unarmed Combat: The workshop submitted version was named "Unarmed comBat". Boston Basher: Strangely, there is no bloodless version of this bat that can be used for when the censored mode is enabled. The Axtingusher and Ubersaw both have censored versions, however. Wrap Assassin: While the description claims the "balls" fly at 90 miles an hour, the in-game engine actually allows them to reach 127.8 miles an hour. Atomizer: The weapon was originally named "The Atomic Punch". Fan O'War: The item's name is based off the phrase "man o'war", which was slang used by the Royal Navy for powerful warships used between 16th-19th Century. Also, the weapon was originally designed for the Soldier.

Stock Scattergun, the most important and most creative design of a weapon for Scout was completely neglected. It's special because it uses three various mechanisms, and each of them defies the use of the two other's. I'm not an expert on weapons, but from what we can see, it's got a Winchester style lever-action loading mechanism, with a lever which in reality you're supposed to pull only *once* after every shot, a drum magazine, designed to hold multiple shots, popular in self-repeating weapons that don't even require pulling any levers after shot, and finally - two barrels, designed for double-barrelled shotguns that can shoot only twice - once from each barrel. The only logical way to explain how this weapon works is that the drum contains a _smaller,_ internal magazine with either 3x2 or 6x2 size, and the lever is only used to put shells into it, while the shotgun itself utilizes a self-repeating mechanism, which normally wouldn't require any form of reloading between shots. Either way, it's an overcomplicated mechanism that can only be explained by a need to limit the amount of ammo that Scout uses per second, for whatever reasons. The only sensible role for the two barrels would be the need to increase the strength of a single shot, assuming every single shot is actually from both barrels at the same time.
@garchompenthusiast
@garchompenthusiast 3 жыл бұрын
I think what we can assume is that Scout's entire resevoir of ammunition is held in the drum, but only has enough room to store 6 spent shells Because the scout always dies before he runs out of ammo, we never need to see the drum reloaded/refilles ;D

I cannot express how much I hate the sun on a shit I really hate the sun on a shit. It doesn't even deserve to take up 1 whole space in my loadout. I'd rather fight with scout's small baby fists than use this pathetic excuse of a melee weapon. "UsE iT WiTH FrieNDly PyROs To MaKE ThE MoSt ouT of IT" as if the burning enemies didn't already burn to death. The fact that the enemy is burning and pyro is still alive is already a sign that the enemy is gonna die, and a crit would be useless. Its basically a neon anniahlator except you can actually use the neon. Sure, pyro is weaker in water, but with the shotgun, he stands a chance. Now, in what situation is scout stronger by running straight into a firefight? None. And besides, you'd be better off finishing them off with a scattergun. TL; DR sun on a stick is shit, useless, and the worst weapon in tf2.

I have a theory about the dent on the stock bat, and it ties directly into the Meet the Scout SFM released by Valve. You know how in that one scene where Scout and Heavy are fighting and Scout jumps up with his bat over his head to hit the Heavy? The dent is from when Scout smashed Heavy in the head in that one scene. For more SFM weirdness, if a Scout is blown to gibs, there is a small chance a dove will fly out of the gib cloud, a direct reference to Meet the Medic's ending where Med is questioning where Archimedes disappeared to and we hear the bird vocalizing within the Scout's body.

@drivanradosivic1357 4 жыл бұрын
if the Scattergun was to be made with more sense, the drum bit would still be oval, but you could see rear sights and it would have two loading and two ejection ports. Plus the scattergun is basically a double barrel lever action version of the SPAS 12 in how it operates(semi auto and pump/lever action modes) so it just needs some tweaking on the model side and the stock items could use some functions to not be just a "the upside of the stock is that it lacks the negatives of the unlocks" while not having any positives of their own. Hell, the Quake Champions default Super Shotgun is how a Scattergun would act like.

Im guessing the reason why the scout never loads shells into the scattergun is because all the ammo is stored in the drum magazine and during the reload animation he loads in new rounds from the magazine and also ejects the fired shells at once.

I actually noticed this a while back, at the beginning when you mention that scout never actually loads shells, he actually does. See, theres a small opening at the bottom of the scattergun that you dont usually get to see, and scout has basically, a handfull of shotgun shells. While hes working the lever of the scattergun, hes also loading in new shells. Pretty cool.

The Boston Basher looks like a World War One trench club. Soldiers found that, in the cramped conditions of trench fighting, it was better to improvise weapons than to rely on a bayonet on the end of a long rifle. So, they'd gather up whatever sharp things they could scrounge, like nails or coils of barbed wire, and attach them to lengths of scrap wood to make deady close-quarters weapons
