In this video I look at the new Commodore Amiga CD32 060 card with 128mb of Ram from Terrible Fire. This video is just for fun and I do some future updates when stuff comes out. I dont know anything about price or release dates.

I remember back in the day - I had the CD32 and an SX-1 expansion. A couple of my friends came over and one of them asked me to play over the prodigy album I had to tape to him. So I setup the recording playing back from Workbench, then we looked at each other and thought - well let's play Warlords while we wait, so he got a tape with the prodigy album that had Warlord sounds over it ;)

(Great upload Ravi thanks for sharing this )! The A1200 and CD32 were prematurely taken out of the market I owned both and when David Pleasance and Colin Proudfoot lost their bid to buy out Commodore it really peed me off. That's why I get very excited as each time another more powerful than the last cartridge comes out for our beloved Amiga's because 27 years later our machines can still KICK SOME AAAASSSS! :)

Such a shame about the sound capture in this one, because other than that, this was fantastic. If you'd told me in 1993 that the CD32 would one day be able to have a 68060 running at such a fast clock speed hiding inside that case, I would have asked you if you were on drugs, hahaha. This has such a lot of potential, and I absolutely love it!

Hey man! Awesome video 👍 I never really liked the CD32 in 1994, I had one, I sold it. However I decided to give one a go again about 18 months ago, and I got a TF330 for it, and WOW... what a machine it is with the expansion. I'd say the best setup if you just want a gaming Amiga. Amazing the difference these cards can make 👍 I absolutely love my CD32 now, and would recommend to anyone.

Being all too familiar with the limited upgrade options on CD32 (Well, SX32 Pro, 64 MB ram, 030 @ 50) this looks absolutely bonkers to see in action. Only thing really missing is dedicated CD32 controls for each of the games shown :) A kit like this would be a fortune in 1995-1996, but since its a real 68K processor, it would not be impossible. If the CD32 was released with this, it would have totally competed in the 3D console generation. Very very impressive. The fact it can be installed inside a CD32 makes it even more so. If i had one nitpick, it would be this - Gameplay footage of the rare Trapped and Trapped 2 games run through this. The latter has the title of being one of the most advanced Amiga-native engines around - unlike Quake which is originally a PC title. Trapped 2 will likely fly on this hardware, though. (And perhaps Quake 2 68k//Malice 68K (Quake TC) ZDoom 68K - Novacoder did ports of these) All in all, can't wait to see more of this in action. :)

I think the main reason why this failed is due to the fact that the US government banned the import of any Amiga CD32 into the country as a result of an alleged patent infringement. Something to do with a blinking cursor that never had the right to be patented in the first place. $10m had to be paid to get around this ban causing Commodore’s part in the console wars to come to an abrupt end.

Nice! I always loved Payback - the soundtrack is actually awesome in its own right. Just to point out, Genetic Species was released in 1998 or 1999, not 2009 ;) I remember it being raved about in Amiga Format at the time and including a demo on their cover CD. Excellent game indeed! This is probably the furthest you can go with the CD32 without going the FPGA route, where largely it stops being an Amiga and starts being something based on the Amiga.
@roygillotti4615
@roygillotti4615 4 жыл бұрын
The 68060 was never in anything Amiga originally, I say an FPGA accelerator is just as valid solution as an 68060, and much more valid of a solution than PPC accelerators. Even the Vampire doesn't stop using the original Chip Ram, Original custom chips and etc, it leaves everything intact, just adds a faster processor, Fast RAM and RTG graphics, Ethernet solution and depending on model an IDE controller. everything outside the 68020 in the case of the CD32/A1200 is still intact and working.

@@roygillotti4615 I thought the latest firmware for the Vampire bypasses the ECS/AGA chipset and does it in FPGA?
@roygillotti4615
@roygillotti4615 4 жыл бұрын
@@uberdude2555 That isn't the case, the latest v2 firmware doesn't do that, The lastest is gold 2.12 and it's still just RTG graphics and relies on the original chipsets. there was a gold 3 alpha that was used only for development test for the making of V4 Stand-alone core before it was released... it's not really even in a usable state.
@roygillotti4615
@roygillotti4615 4 жыл бұрын
@@uberdude2555 Also that said, I also doubt a fully realized AGA core will actually happen for the V2 Vampire, it just involves breaking too much functionality. I believe the current state is what we will have with incremental updates to what we have for the V2.

@@roygillotti4615 Well that peaks my interest. I remember Majsta saying a few years ago during a computer show, that his vampire cards could already technically stand alone if a simple clock signal was generated, and he saw the original graphics chipset eventually becoming redundant. I hope they don't bypass the AGA chipset otherwise the Amiga becomes a glorified I/O device. My primary concern with the Vampire team is in my opinion they have become very greedy, making people wait many months for hardware. I remember when they tripled the price of the Vampire 600 and cited it was because they wanted them professionally manufactured. All these years later and these cards are still in high demand but still being slowly trickled out, seemingly to keep prices high so the secondhand marketplace isn't saturated. I understand Stephen Leary is considering making his own FPGA 060 drop-in replacement, I hope him every success, this will enable him and the Warp1200 team to be able to better compete with Vampire on different pricing points and less waiting around. The Warp1200 if it had an FPGA would be a better card than the Vampire in my opinion the use of an ARM co processor if further developed can easily outperform a responsible price FPGA doing 68k, it offers potential for graphics card acceleration, and the automatic switching between RTG and AGA is a very nice feature as already done on other high end boards like ZZ9000 graphics card.

I remember I had an A500 with a Blizzard turbocard. I actually had to deactivate the turbo to play Street Fighter 2. When I later on sold my setup to buy an A1200, it was actually slower than my A500, I was so dissapointed.
@ferran.garcia
@ferran.garcia 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm… AFAIK, neither Phase5 nor DCE made turbocards for the A500 (I mean, cards with CPU different from the 68000, like 020, 030 and so on), but for A1200 and A4000 (maybe usable in A3000). Maybe you talknig about GVP turbocards, those attached to the side of the A500. The only thing I remember they made similar to a turbocard was a fastmem card with a faster 68000@14MHz, to be attached to the original 7Mhz CPU socket, but I don't think it can compete with a A1200. Well, maybe the RAM made the difference…

060's are great, I consider them to be the end of the original Amiga line, the PPC and Vampire just aren't the same as they don't have that wow factor to me. When you see the latest TBL demo or Quake run on an 060 you are impressed, but who cares when you see such things on a PPC? it's nothing for those processors you might as well be using a modern PC.
@roygillotti4615

I see it as essentially the same, 68060 wasn't in anything originally sold by Commodore. The Vampire is a bit better as it's using an motorolla 68k based architecture, just modernized. However the PPC based accelerators are completely different animal... Well that is how I rate the purity of it all...

@@roygillotti4615 Yea Commodore are said to to have made approximately 200 A4000T's before going bankrupt in April 94, these featured the 68040 presumably because that was still the best available processor at the time, the 68060 was only released sometime in 94 and would have required some time for Amiga libraries to be developed. I think it's fair to conclude Commodore would have adopted the 68060 for their A4000 range, and in practice it was still officially the A4000 flagship processor as the story of that machine continued until Escom also went under.

Same for me, i also loved the Amiga CD32, my father bought a Amiga CD32 + SX32 Pro with 64MB RAM and a 512MB Hard Drive for me back in 1996, 2 years after commodore went bankrupt, i wish I'd never gotten rid of it. In the beginning my father had a Commodore 128D, then later he bought a Amiga 2000 with 5MB RAM, and i was crazy about that computer, it had a lot of games that came with it, and i and my father played a LOT of games on it, like Switchblade II and Turrican 2 en 3 and Z-Out and Agony and Silkworm, and MANY more of does great games games, i really miss does times playing video games with my father. I have been a Amiga fan from +/-1988/89 to 2002, when i bought a Windows XP Game PC, but still have a Amiga 500 and 500+ and Amiga CD32 + TF330, can't wait to have my TF360. And always loved to play this video on my Amiga CD32 back on my Amiga Club. Yeah they should have released this game Console back in 1992 in December, but with a 68030 50MHz CPU and a minimum of 8MB fats RAM, and with much more great looking games special made for the Amiga CD32 with 68030 and 8MB RAM, then i would have saved Commodore, even with the bad CEO Commodore had. Thanks for this great video.
