One of the odder inventions that eventually reached active service in an issued rifle, the rod bayonet existed in the 1800s and early 1900s. It was an attempt to reduce the load of the soldier by creating an extremely lightweight rod or tri-bladed bayonet that was internal to the rifle. A soldier wouldn't have to worry about losing a long knife and theoretically had an ideally better tool for stabbing. It originally seeing some experimentation on the Hall rifle, then later on the 1873 Trapdoor Springfield. It was evident on early Springfield prototypes as well and finally becoming main issue when the 1903 Springfield was adopted in 1903. However this is what was the final nail in the coffin for the rod bayonet because it started encountering problems when being employed in the field. It was too thin, could easily be bent and then get in the path of the round, and even worse, could not be fitted back into the stock of the rifle if it did get damaged. Things came to a head when President Theodore "Teddy" Rosevelt broke one off in the White House and demanded a better version be produced. Experiments were done with enlarging the rod and strengthening it, but at this point the soldiers might as well have been issued an original bayonet for the same weight and even more utility. It was eventually completely taken off from all the production rifles and thus ended the rod bayonet.
Ironically, the British tried a similar concept with their own versions for the No.4 that could be completely taken off but were shaped like a 6-inch rod. Troops hated it so much that later versions incorporated an actual blade and later was completely switched out to an actual bayonet when the SLR became adopted.

LOL, i was reading the Osprey book on the 1903 Springfield hours ago and saw exactly the same weird bayonet and thought the same about it. Such bayonets are almost useless, but the idea has some merits; no need to something hanging from your belt, nor a new piece of equipment &c. The french used it in the excellent MAS36 rifles and the germans in the great FG42 battle rifle. On the other side, pointy bayonets like this one can't compete with knife-bayonets in its everyday camp and field life.
@deepbludreams
@deepbludreams 6 жыл бұрын
This brings into question the need for bayonets at all, the last time a bayonet charge worked against a well equiped military was WW2, [We are not going to talk about those UK guys who managed to scare off some goat herders with sharp knifes on the end of their rifles, the Taliban tend to run away and not fight anyways.] if you are charging at a well equipped enemy, you are all dead, end of story, no heroism can save you from dying to a GPMG who's job is to prevent such a thing from taking place. Why bother? The South African's for example don't issue bayonets and just give out better field knifes. take the AR15/M4/M16 all three lose their bayonet lugs the moment you want to run a free floated hand guard, i think the much greater accuracy of the freefloat system is worth far far more then the possibility of mounting a knife to your rifle. also try to use an M9 Bayonet as a knife, you will be disspointed quickly, it's basically useless, i'd rather be issued a leatherman multitool then to have to lug around a bad knife that also happens to be a bad bayonet.

Hall rifles and carbines (more so carbines) were still used in the Civil war. Springfield Armory sure did had a major hard on for trying to adopt a rod bayonet

Roosevelt in his own style showed how useless the rod bayonet was by demonstrating it. He was not only in the Rough Riders but also in the New York National Guard and he was also experienced in boxing, wrestling, and later judo (just to give an idea of his fighting background.) He had one rifle with the blade the other had the rod. He showed the rod bent very easily in the demonstration.

I had a neighbor and mentor who was constantly trying to sell me one of his trapdoors with a rod bayonet. He had 2 of those rifles. I told him I would never buy a rifle with a silly rod bayonet. Apparently no one else wanted to buy it either. When he died, I am sure both rifles were still in his collection. I never liked spike bayonets either. I realized the Brits had to make them due to wartime shortages, but they and especially the Bowie blade bayonet with the same spike bayonet attachment for the Mk IV rifle were pretty absurd. They should have made the spike bayonets only and let soldiers buy sheath/belt knives from the civilian market.

The cruciform bayonet is much less likely to stick inside an opponent's body and the deep stab wound is much harder to treat. However the slashing ability and usefulness of a blade bayo gave it the nod, as far as bayonets are actually considered useful.

Civil war reinactor scuttlebut was that ram rods were used as ammo to prevent other infantry charges .Shoot then charge with bayonettes . Counter was shoot , reload quick like then just shoot with rods in ,This skips several steps and could catch the other force by surprise So do or die for both forces . I do know factually two things about this urban legend . Alot of state park will not let you do a reinactment with the rod for fear one will fly. and of coarse that so and so saw it happen .Having heard this rumor several so called soldier /scientist shot a rod It embeded impressively, the whole rod sidewaysi nto a old old oak . This oak stopped what was later refered to as the "propeller of death" .Note we used string to pull trigger as there was and still is a concern that it could/would result in a split of the barrels as a sort of squib . Have said that I have no doubt on rod could kill and go through several people at head neck level
