The Crazy Story Behind the First Springfield Rifle ever Produced

What usually happens to numerically significant firearms is that they get put in a museum and carefully guarded. Not the first Springfield M1903, Serial Number One though! Crazy enough, this particular rifle actually rolled right off the production line and into Army service when it was produced before the war. Originally a rod bayonet version and in .30-03, it was later reconfigured into a non-rod bayonet variant and barrel changed to .30-06, having been made in 1909. But this is actually completely typical of many low serial number M1903 rifles during that era when these changes occurred. In fact what makes Serial Number One so much more significant is that for its service life, it wasn't at all and was treated like any other Springfield out there in the Army's service.
We also know a little bit about the story of how it came to the Armory. Issued to a soldier deploying to the Western Front during the First World War, it was taken away from him before he got to the front lines as some higher echelon leadership realized the importance of the serial number that the rifle had. The soldier was given an M1917 Enfield in exchange, of which apparently he didn't like too much!

Honestly, I'm glad it was issued and saw service. That gives it a far richer history than being some pristine little Shelf Queen that barely sees the light of day each decade, since it was originally put together.

This may be about the first Model 1903 Springfield rifle, NOT the first Springfield rifle. General George Washington, before he was President, approved the site of the Springfield Armory in 1777. It served as an arsenal only until 1795. It's first firearm was the Model 1795, though technically not a "rifle", it was a smoothbore musket patterned after the French Charleville. The first RIFLE produced at Springfield was the Model 1803. Also produced at Harper's Ferry. After the destruction of the Harper's Ferry factory, Springfield was the only manufacturer of rifles for the military until the Rock Island Arsenal was opened in 1862. Springfield made dozens of rifle and carbine models prior to the Model 1903. Most well known Models 1855, 1861, 1862, 1863, 1866, 1873, 1878, 1884, 1892, 1894, 1896, 1898, 1899 and THEN...the 1903. Springfield continued to produce rifles until 1968, it's last production military rifle being the US M-14. Since then the military has contracted production to firearms manufacturers and got out of the business of making firearms.

I am not going to lie. I think it is generally expected for the early numbered guns to be issued regardless the #. You have to understand. We benefit from modern hindsight. People back then do not always know or recognize what they have will become significant or historically important later. They just treated it like a regular old item manufactured for service. This is why I think they issued the gun. Honestly, it might have been too premature in some way to send it to a museum for that number yet back then at that moment it was made. It was produced to be given for soldiers. That's what they chose to do with it.

I'm guessing that the other number one was a Krag-Jorgensen. Awesome video, made even better with the back story by the soldier it was issued to. I would have been disappointed like he was to lose the number one Springfield to be issued a 1917 Enfield. I just never warmed up to the Enfield. Nice gun, but kinda clunky to my tastes.

TFB TV my parents split up, my mom doesn't have much money right now (she has a decent amount, but she just paid all the bills) luckily I live in a conservative area of the county but I do hate this place, I'd rather live in Nevada with my uncle (I don't know why I call him my uncle, he's in his 70's) the first time I went shooting wasn't too bad, I went with my dad and a guy who helped pay for range time, I shot an AR-15 and a .22 pump action rifle, my aim is pretty good considering I'm blind out of my left eye and have 20/40 vision in my right (don't feel bad for me) but I got a round stuck in the chamber of the AR 15 and we couldn't get it out, it was still fun though

well, it depends on how you look at it. from a tactical stand point, it is another thing that has to be taped down in the field to keep it from making noise or getting snagged on stuff. the modern military rarely stacks rifles, everyone is to keep their weapons within arms reach at all times, we don't leave them "over there". modern slings use one sling point at the rear, if they use one at all, so why put stacking or sling swivel on if it doesn't need to be there.
@tropicalfruit4571
@tropicalfruit4571 6 жыл бұрын
I'd argue about how many times a stacking swivel was taped down to make no noise(although that's a valid point) but it is such a minor thing to put on one's gun that it really shouldn't be a problem to make them for modern rifles. On the other hand as you say, modern military doesn't really stack weapons anymore so why bother? But if you are worried about swivel making noise then just copy Germans' idea of stacking rods :P

My company in the US Army Reserves had a 4.2 mortar with the serial number 0007 back in 1980s. We had problems shooting it because at some point in time the ammo specs were tightened and the rifling was too tight for the newer rounds. Apparently the tube had gotten slightly out of round over the years, and we were now (then) getting hang fires (not fun). They were able to fix it.
