I interview Aaron Frankel, a guy who has spent his whole life in Thailand. In this interview Aaron talks about his childhood growing up in Bangkok in the 70's and the mischief he got up to with his friends. He talks about the culture shock he experienced when he went to university in America and what he does for a living in Bangkok. #thairishtimes #lifeinthailand #farangspeakthai

Anger is only expressed by children or adults who haven't learned how to behave properly. Love that

Other Asian cultures operate this way, too. It was the first thing I learned as a Mainlander in moving to Hawaii. It makes negotiating through society very pleasant, everyone being civil to each other.

I disagree with this to a point and I think it is why some developing nations remain developing. I have lived abroad off/on mostly in Brazil but in Thailand as well, for decades. Anger when effectively channeled can lead to meaningful change. For a Thai example one can be sentenced to prison for decades for sharing a political cartoon on social media that pokes fun at a Royal Family pet is wrong and deserves anger, but if you do you can go to prison. So let´s not make light of the lack of freedom in Thailand.

Great interview, even better than with his mom. As one who has lived in Thailand (on and off) since the late 1960s I can truly appreciate Aaron. It was very interesting that he understands provincial folks so well (I whole heartedly agree even though my family are Bangkokians.) I can remember how genuinely friendly I was treated in the small villages of the Northeast 50 years ago and now in my village in Bangkok. Pete, your work is really fantastic in finding these interviews.

I'm Thai and travelled to countries as well (America, Aus, Nz, East Asia, Europe). I feel related to what Aaron said about Thai people. They are super kind, playful, polite and friendly. I always tell my kids about this and teach them to respect all Thai rural people who are so honest. I'm glad that Aaron is Thai now cause he is so playful, sanook ka.

Hello Pete, this interview was brilliant. When I hear of westerners that have made Thailand their home makes me very jealous. When I first went on a holiday to Thailand in 2000. I know that Thailand made me mellow. The reason I am saying this, is the Thai people made me what I am today. Their smile and their politeness is something I have not seen in other countries. That is why Thailand is closest to my heart, and makes me venture there practically every year.

Thanks to you both for your interview. The key thing I've taken from his & his mom is that westerners are never really accepted by Thais in an intimate/connected & long lasting way. His mom said that her Thai female friendships were limited & that the Thais were only around in the good times & not the bad. To me, this signals lacks depth & that would be unsatisfactory long term.

Yes that would be intersting, though a interview like that should be done from people who live in tourist areas, rual areas and Thais who have lived abroad in the west. Also the interview should be in Thai. To get a well rounded point of view. Thing is if Pete intrviews them I don't think Thai people will answer really truthfully. Great interview. I really agree with the language barrier which we need to improve. He speaks my mind, I always thought that the government should invest whatever it take to improve our people language ability. It ‘s hurt when I heard our Thais said that we do not need to speak English, we have our own language, if foreigner want to visit our country they should learn our language blah blah blah… I wish they realize what opportunities in life they had to sacrifice with this thought.

As a farang who visits Thailand a few months a year, it was interesting to hear this content. Could it be that the Thai government has a desire to keep it's people non English speaking? I think possibly but won't mention the reasons they might want to do that. I believe that since Thai is used in no other country olther than Thailand, it is a massive disadvantage for young Thai people to not learn English in a serious way. The doors that would open for those well versed in speach, writing and reading are many and varied.

@@ericpowell4350 you right. Let's IImagine if there was a huge change in language usage 50 years ago. You won't find the unique Thai identity of today. There are many hidden reasons. To maintain the so-called "balance." Learning English in Thailand is taught in the basics. From elementary school to university. But the quality of teaching depends on the ability of the teachers and the policies of each school. Because Thailand has their own spoken language and alphabet that have been invented almost 800 years ago. Thai language and Thai alphabet are closely related to the way of life of Thai people. The official language is mainly Thai and Thai numbers. The fact that Thailand was never colonized by the Westerners during the colonial era. But the Thai people used the Westerners to help develop the country in that era. Even if a large number of lands were stolen. P.S. I agree that the education system, especially the English language, needs to be improved to be of greater quality. I myself am shocked that many young people cannot speak English even after graduating from university. This would take time to develop both teachers and students.
