Flick back to part one if you haven’t seen the original video about how Australians yell “thank you driver!” when getting off the bus! 👀
New to my videos? ⬇️
👋 Hi, I’m Brooke! 👉 American backpacker who’s lived in South Korea, Chile, and Spain and now based in Sydney, Australia.
Sharing things I've learned along the way as a traveling content creator. Anything for the plot. 😉

Australian here. I was in Japan recently and I always said hello to the tram drivers and thank you to the conductor in Japanese when I got off. I got a few pleasantly surprised looks. I hope it takes off in Japan. Also pro tip. Everyone says crime is low in Japan. That means it still exists. So apply your usual level of awareness as you would elsewhere.

Nah i live in Australia, visited Melbourne and i had one positive interaction there with a woman. Whatd she do? She held the door for us to get past. Everyone else was rude, impatient drivers honking at pedestrians using the crossing while the pedestrian light was active, people not moving over and shoving straight past you, just a bad experience in general. Wont be returning there any time soon. Other than that most other places are pretty good.

In Sydney, there used to be a bell noise after you pressed the button to indicate that you wanted to get off at the next stop. On hearing the bell one afternoon, the driver called out, "That must be the front door." Without thinking I replied, "Don't get up. I'll find my way out." It's not hysterical, drop dead laughter, it's just brightening the day a little, you know.

Yes New Zealanders have always done this. I was born and grew up there. My mother always said “thank you driver” as we got off so I learned that from a little girl. I’ve lived in Aust now for about 40 years and to be honest, not all people and especially not some ethnicities say it here. People in Aus never said it when I first got here. My most recent trip home it was very obvious because I heard it from nearly everyone. I’m glad it’s become more the norm here. I remember someone early on saying to me I don’t need to thank the driver. Well no I don’t but it’s friendly and polite. Imagine driving a whole shift and not a thank you for your service. One wouldn’t do that to a waiter.
