This video came together both quicker and slower than I expected. Originally I was hoping to release it on Betty White's hundredth birthday, but sadly she passed away shortly after I recorded the audio. Although this video is dedicated to her, I also want to acknowledge the work of Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty, whose talents cannot be understated.
For anyone who watches these videos and wonder if they should seek out the series I'm talking about on their own; I strongly recommend checking this one out. Much of the humour holds up surprisingly well, and the more somber moments still hit cleanly. Certain aspects haven't aged well, but compared to some other shows I've covered, this one has more hits than misses.
In honour of Betty White, please consider a donation to American Humane. Betty White was an active member for over sixty years.

I misspoke at 1:00:45. I meant to say Hurricane Saturday, not Sunday. The graphic on screen is accurate! A commenter also confirmed that the Great Herring War story Rose delivers at 26:46 was not ad-libbed. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZiVl9hjnc6onqc.html Also, Empty Nest had seven seasons, not 6.

Hurricane Sunday made me think of when Fox did the same gimmick for all the Seth MacFarlane shows. Since all those shows take place on the east coast, they had a Hurricane effect Family Guy, American Dad, and the Cleveland Show.

This show featured one of the sadest moments in all of TV history. When Phil (Dorothy's brother) dies, Sophia won't grief. She is still angry at him because he liked to dress up as a woman, which supposedly was an embarassement to her and the family. And she is angry at Phil's wife for not having done anything to stop it. But it turns out all that anger is actually directed at herself. Sophia blames herself because she thinks she might have done something to cause this. Phil's wife then tells Sophia, that her son had been a good husband, a good father and a good person. Her cold facade breaks, and she realizes her son, whom she loved dearly, is gone.

There was a Tumblr post that went around occasionally with a Golden Girls quote and a memorial in the order of when the actresses died. I'd always tear up whenever I saw Rose's "What happens if I'm the only one left?", I still cry just thinking about it. On the 31st, I drew a picture of Betty White reuniting with the other actresses and it felt almost cathartic...they're together again.

It's so impressive how absolutely straight-faced Betty White was during the herring circus scene. It makes sense that Rose wouldn't laugh since punchlines often went over her head but the fact that Betty was able to keep it together while the others lost it in front of her is amazing.

Your study of the character of Blanche Devereaux reveals that the characterization was heavily influenced by another character in literature. A famous character who is also a southern bell. Insecure in her appearance. Yet very aware of how men react to her appearance and demeanor. Keeping the facade of a genteel Southern lady but she also has a need for men to validate her as a woman. Blanche Devereaux is modeled after the character Blanche Dubois in Tennessee Williams award winning play A Streetcar Named Desire.

Yeah, the show aged as any fine wine could only hope to. Its honestly a bit baffling how timeless its grandeur truly is. Its bittersweet, I suppose. It kinda hurts knowing our four ladies, people who - to me at least - seem like dear friends, having passed on, hopefully to be reunited in whatever sort of heaven may or may not exist, but at the same time, I am incredibly glad to have been alive - in my case, since I was born in 2002 - after such a wonderful show. Had I been born a century before or after, I may have never gotten to see it. Its a true honor. At least I feel as though it is.

Growing up, Saturday night was "Golden Girls night". Most of the jokes flew over my head (I was about 7 or 8 when it premiered). I appreciate it so much more as an adult; the humor hasn't aged as badly as some sitcoms from that time, and some of the storylines seem more modern than the reboot of Sex and the City. The Golden Girls are what make life after 50 seem like there's still a lot to look forward to.

Of course to try and make light of this; Bill Maher did a segment on his late night talk show on HBO titled "Books That Didn't Age Well." For those who aren't familiar with "Real Time with Bill Maher" the segment "Books That Didn't Age Well" consists of fictitious books that under the circumstances they were "released" did not age well. One of these books is a fictitious book by Queen Elizabeth II titled "Kiss my Ass, Betty White! Living to 100 and Loving it!"

I was the only web producer at my news station working when Betty White passed, so I got the unique honor of writing an article about it. Every outlet was just reporting on her death and her role in the Golden Girls, and that was all fine, but I had the thought to shine a light on my favourite thing about her--her love of animals, something that is wholly relatable. And being a local news station, I also happen to know Betty White was made an honorary alumna of the WSU Veterinary program, presented with a white coat and everything. Apparently, she was choked up for a moment, before joking, "So now that I have this white coat, if any of you would like to be spayed or neutered, I’m available." And that's why I adore Betty White. She was such a genuine lady, and witty and funny to boot. That article was one of the best performing on our site for nearly a month, and I'm not even mad about it. She was a treasure.

I discovered Golden Girls early last year.. My country was going thru a horrible 2nd Covid wave..and my mental health dipped to new lows.. I fell in love with the show - it made me laugh and learn and cry. I will never be able to fully express how much this show means to me - it has become on of my all time favorite's. I introduced this show to my Conservative Indian mother who was curious about what I watched everyday and laughed so much. The show brought us closer when we had drifted apart - it was invaluable seeing my mother share stories abt her college crushes and laughing at the risqué (to my mom) jokes. The show has become something me and my mom exclusively share. I'm not very religious but I sincerely hope Bea, Betty, Estelle and Rue have found happiness and peace wherever they have gone after their deaths.. Especially Betty White - that woman was a treasure and it broke my heart to hear her passing away at 99..Betty - I hope u brighten up the afterlife (if there is such a thing) just like u did on earth.

That is far too common, unfortunately. The thing is, it might be in your head. That doesn't mean it isn't real. Last I checked, the head is part of the body. Mental conditions that cause physical symptoms still need to be treated. I'm not saying your conition is mental, I have no idea. Rather, I'm saying that it should not be dismissed regardless of the cause. The cause would just determine the best course of treatment.

It’s worth documenting every little thing in a small pocket notebook. Do note your starting and ending pain levels during the day and any spikes, things you skipped out on doing or had trouble doing because of pain and so on. The next time they discount you offer them the notebook as evidence. Any doctor that dismisses a record of your pain as exaggerated deserves pointed questions asking them if they’d believe you if you were a man. Of course that’s make them defensive but it will tell you which doctors are letting their personal biases get in the way of their medical practice. (Source: I spent 7 years trying to manage my “laziness” and eventually had to get my father to verify everything and demand a sleep study. Even though I was 23 and not living with him. This isn’t doable during Covid. The note book got me the referral to a neurologist in the first place though.)

Yes! Some of my most fond memories are of going over to my grandparents house every week. I had a standing "date" with them every Saturday for years. We would order pizza, watch The Golden Girls and usually a rented movie after the show. This continued through my pregnancy and the birth of my first born...a daughter. So appropriate. My Nana, myself and my daughter. Of course she was just a baby/toddler during this years. My grandmother looked (and at times acted) just like Rose/Betty White. Sadly, she passed away at age 88. My mom passed away when she was only 46 of cancer, so my Nana and I became even closer. Not only was she my beloved grandmother, she became my surrogate mother after my mom passed. Now my daughter, granddaughter and myself often watch the Golden Girls returns. (I never get tired of them! 😁) Sometimes I'll stop and think of how now I've become the beloved grandmother making memories with my granddaughter. I can only hope to be the grandmother that my Nana was. 🥰

The storyline of Dorothy and her chronic fatigue resonates so much with me. I had a horrible neck problem as a kid caused by a surgery that the surgeon did whatever he could to make it seem like he wasn't the cause (for awhile making us think it was a bacterial infection). And it took months until finally one doctor realized what must have happened and gave me muscle relaxants that fixed it, but to this day I still can't turn my neck all the way. And luckily I had parents who are doctors so my case was fast tracked. And I've seen basically every female partner I've had being dismissed by doctor's bc they couldn't easily figure out what was wrong and me trying my best not to punch the doctor in the face as my partner is in agonizing pain. One had mono and bronchitis simultaneously but the doctor refused to test for anything besides mono, because she knew it was that and nothing else. I argued with he doctor, almost telling her I should take her MD for myself bc I seemed to know more than her but stayed polite for my girlfriend's sake. Eventually we got a doctor who got her anti biotics that worked. I had another partner who got viciously ill on a trip down by the beach and the doc basically telling them they're being hysterical or crazy but using euphemisms for it and I was arguing with the doctor to do more tests since my partner was literally on the bed sweating and moaning in pain. It's sad that the only reason they got any respect was bc I'm a large man and I was there to be a bit more intimidating to the doctors, I can't imagine the shit women have to go through on their own with this shit when their illnesses aren't easily identifiable.

It took me 10 years to get diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. I was made feel like a neurotic idiot just because they didn't believe it existed. I was the one telling them, but I was dismissed. There were times when I thought nobody was ever going to take me seriously. Many are so ignorant that just because they can't physically see something, to them it isn't there at all. 17:00-21:10 This issue Dorthy went through happened to me when I was a young woman, I had just turned eighteen. I was diagnosed relatively quickly with Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome but I was treated awfully by doctors, ‘specialists, and physical therapists who didn’t know how to treat the disease or didn’t know what they were doing. I was told that my pain was all in my head, that I was crazy and that I was faking it by mental health professionals as well. It’s been eight years since the accident that caused my diagnosis and science has come a long way, but Dorothy was right when she said that she would have been treated differently if she was a man.

I am living with a cronic iron deficience, and the only "plan" the doctors had so far is to give me iron tablets, which I can't stomach at all. Well, my first doctor was looking for a cause, but then he retired, and I went through a string of doctors who basically went "well, that's something the lady's doctor should look at". I am not with a female doctor, and while I couldn't really "test her out" in this regard (bad timing with the pandemic and all) at least she didn't go immediatly "not my problem, it's because you are a women". I can relate very well to Dorothy, because I know how it is to go through your days constantly tired.

Why is the sleeping arrangement between Rose and Jean just left as a "well, it was 1986". I think even here in 2022, it was right for Jean to move to the couch. She just confessed something intimate to Rose in hopes to change their relationship. When Rose doesn't reciprocate, Jean did the right thing and gave her space. They discussed it the next day, after Rose had time to consider her feelings. I think it would have been creepy for Jean to have stayed in the bed after Rose did not reciprocate her feelings.

i think whether it comes off as creepy or not would depend on how its played. Like if maybe she got up to leave and Rose said something along the lines of oh the couch is uncomfortable you can stay here, it would show that even though Jean is a lesbian Rose is still comfortable sharing a bed in a platonic way as she would with a straight woman. Relating to a personal example, once at camp the other girls started to suspect I am gay (which is true even though I didn't fully know it yet). Well we all had to share beds because of the set up, and I got sent to sleep on the floor because nobody wanted to share a bed with me. Even if I did have a crush on whatever girl I shared with, does it really matter in that context? It's not like I would have done anything predatory just because of a crush. Similarly, Jean could have shared the bed with Rose and not try anything sexual because Rose doesn't feel the same way (combatting predatory stereotypes) and Rose could be an example for straight audiences by being completely comfortable with the situation. Also, if Rose wanted to share a bed the audience could interpret it as her questioning her sexuality before coming to the conclusion she is straight. Either way, I think it can only really work if Jean offers to leave and Rose asks her stay.
@user-zh4vo1kw1z
@user-zh4vo1kw1z 2 жыл бұрын
I always do a genderswap if I am in doubt about those things. And it would have taken some effort to not make it creepy if Jean had been John, had she stayed in the bed. It could be done, if it is made very clear that there is full acceptance of the lack of recoprocity. But even then, if there is any discomfort from Rose; the very least you can do os hit the couch. And she has every right to be uncomfortable: it would easily come across as a 'friendzoned niceguy' situation.

Sick And Tired has one of my favorite Blanche moments, where she's trying to write a romance novel. At the beginning of part 2, before Dorothy leaves, Blanche comes in looking like a wreck and saying that she had a breakthrough after 72 hours of no sleep, and after Dorothy leaves, Blanche stares at a bag of egg yolks that Rose left on the counter and says "My God, I'm hallucinating. I see little balls of sunshine in a bag. Does this mean something?" to which Rose replies "Those are egg yolks Blanche." A couple minutes later in the same scene, she looks at the bag again and says "Rose, what is this? Yellow eyeballs are staring at me!" Definitely imo, one of Rue McClanahan's funniest moments on the show! I've always referred to the actresses on "The Golden Girls" as my TV grandmas.

The clip of Dorothy telling off that one doctor at restaurant ended up on my tumblr dashboard around time I was also diagnosed with chronic fatigue (and pain) when I was 16. I still haven’t gotten around to watching the series but the clip made me feel so seen. Thankfully it was mostly my mother doubting me rather than doctors. My sed rate was abnormally *super* high during my teen years (with no real explanation) so I already had a rheumatologist that suggested it. I had a case of mono that lasted almost 3 months and basically some symptoms never stopped, even 7 years later. She was paralyzed from the waist down when a psychiatrist came in to talk to her in a very condescending tone and telling her the pain was all in her head. My mother said she was paralyzed from the waist down Not from the waist up if one more Dr told her that she was going to punch the next dr right in the F*&$&*$ mouth. They run more tests and found a tumor on the base of her spine but by then the cancer did it damage. Dorothy was right maybe if she was a man maybe she would’ve been taken more seriously and told the Dr he better start listening to his patients.

So I've watched this show more often than I care to admit, so that means I've also taken a lot of time to explore the characters. The most interesting thing I find about Blanche is that it seems rather clear that she uses promiscuity and shallowness as a defense mechanism. There was an episode where the guy she was seeing had a heart attack and was in the hospital and she couldn't bring herself to see him. She says something to the effect of "Ever since George died, I'm afraid that if I don't leave I'm going to get left." To me that says she so much wants another relationship like she had, but with that means she has to be vulnerable and open to experiencing the pain of losing her husband again. So instead, she sleeps around and the moment a relationship gets too serious, she finds some reason to break it off. On the surface, she can easily be reduced to a rather simple character, but she's incredibly complex and deep. It was a beautifully written and acted character who seems so incredibly real.

I can’t deal with the emotions this is bringing up. How I can be laughing at two second long clips while also in tears is just too much! My first experience with Golden Girls was it being the one show my grandmother would watch like crazy that didn’t make me beat my head against the wall in boredom. Then I slowly just got into the theme song and appreciated the vibes and jokes, and then as I got older the deeper feelings and themes got to me. They don’t make shows like this anymore. Sure, we have infinitely more detailed, expensive, and intense shows, but there aren’t nearly as many that are as simply relatable and impactful on a day-to-day basis. Edit: I thought the bit about Betty’s passing sounded added in after the fact. I love that this was something you were already months into and working on. I think it’s a testament to the show, despite how many problems they bring up that haven’t changed, that Betty starred on a show about how the world writes you off at 50 and then came back around after it in her 80s for some of her equally iconic roles. I still love watching her SNL skits and The Proposal.

@@yoohsuke I’m very familiar with dubbing as someone that watches anime. Lol but I figured it could also be an anime situation where they cut costs by choosing to subtitle it anyway. Edit: ooo I get what you mean now. Do you mean original shows in Germany aren’t as common? Fascinating.

@@TheSlipperyNUwUdle we rarely get anything subbed in German TV, only artsy french productions on special channels sometimes 😂? We do sometimes have anime movies in cinemas with subs (the new case closed/Meitantei Conan movies come to mind) but we get them dubbed after that in most cases, too. Germans are pretty spoiled in that we need to have everything dubbed We do have German productions, but more like detective shows in the evenings, pseudo reality stuff during the day and such. But there was a time where How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men etc heaaaavily dominated everything, especially when I still watched TV

It's telling that just a review of the series like this reduces me to tears. The end describing their post-GG careers and eventual deaths hit like a truck with Betty White's passing hitting the hardest. This show and these women are timeless, patron saints of the gay community and will be forever remembered as brilliant, vibrant, talented actors and friends.

Every night, my partner of 30 years (and now my husband) watch an episode of TGG every night in bed before we retire for the night. Who needs the negativity on the news? We fall asleep each night to these four! I sometimes fall asleep during the first 10 minutes and wake up reciting the line about the come! What a gift to have these 7 seasons on dvd. I hope these ladies will be waiting for me at the heaven! ❤️❤️❤️

I’ve never gotten around to watching The Golden Girls despite being fully aware of how wonderful and influential it was and still is, but this video made me burst into tears. I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Four years ago, right after I moved in with my soon to be spouse and 6 months before I completed my master’s degree, it hit me like a truck. I haven’t been able to work since, and my partner has been my caretaker throughout what has been basically our entire relationship. I had absolutely no idea anyone in the 80s was aware of CFS, so when Dorothy’s doctor gave her her diagnosis, both my fiancé and I gasped, and I had to pause the video for a few minutes to cry. That’s because nothing has changed for people with CFS in almost 40 years. That’s why I didn’t know it was even publicly known about then. The amount of doctors I’ve seen who completely brushed me off, attributed my symptoms solely to my mental illnesses, told me to lose weight, etc. etc. ad infinitum is ridiculous. The worst experience I had was with a rheumatologist to whom I spent at least 20 minutes explaining everything I’ve experienced. She barely looked at me the entire time, took no notes, and when she finally spoke, she nonchalantly told me I just needed to stop taking naps. I have never been a napper, and never said anything to indicate that I was. I started crying and left the appointment early. My mother in law, despite having medical training, has said cruel things in the past. My friends are generally unsupportive with a few of them saying cruel things as well. Having a chronic illness or invisible disability is just as isolating and stigmatized as it was 40 years ago, and realizing that is devastating. But seeing this show that I’ve known has been beloved since before I was born respectfully acknowledge the thing that ruined my life and leaves me feeling immense guilt on a daily basis made me feel more validated than I’ve felt by anyone in my life, thankfully with the exception of my partner. I’m sorry. I just needed to get this out somewhere. If you read this and you know someone who struggles with chronic illness or an invisible disability, or even if you don’t, please just…believe them. Believe people who share their stories. If you have the emotional bandwidth to support someone in the way they need, please do. What might seem small to you could make a huge impact. Thank you for all your work on this retrospective, José. Genuinely. I needed to see it.

26:46 I can actually confirm that Betty White did NOT ad-lib that scene. And in fact NO scene in the show was apparently ad-libbed. And even Bea Arthur & Rue McClanahan's laughter was entirely scripted - though that doesn't mean it wasn't also genuine. But it WAS scripted. I literally can't ever post this Twitter link no matter how hard I try, so eventually I just said "fuck it" and screen recorded while looking at the tweets and their pictures and uploaded it as a video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZiVl9hjnc6onqc.html

Whenever you feel down or bored with what’s currently on TV, all you need to do is type in The Golden Girls in the search feature and somewhere, on some channel you will find episodes of this remarkable show. My wife and I have seen all the episodes multiple times, but regardless every show elicits gales of laughter or often the shedding of tears, the performers and stories were that good. Every generation always like to believe that they had the best TV shows and indeed there were a lot of very good ones in the 70’s and 80’s. That said, when I watch re-runs of All In the Family or The Cosby Show, while I still enjoy them immensely, there is just something about the Golden Girls that make them special. With Betty White’s passing on December 31st of last year, the world has lost the final (and in my mind most special) of these remarkable four women. May they all Rest In Peace and a special thank you to Susan Harris for her remarkable writing that gave not only humor to the show, but also a platform to any number of important and heart wrenching topics.

It blows my mind that Blanche, in the show, is only six years older than I am right now. When I watched this show as a kid, I remember thinking that a woman her age shouldn't be acting like that, and here I am, practically right where she was, and I think I understand a little better now. I might be on the verge of old, at least in society's eyes, but I don't feel old and I don't think I act like it. How wonderful that we had these ladies and this show back then to change people's minds about older women, or at least to make them think; how wonderful that those of us who loved them when we were young had them to show us that there's so much more life to live once the first part of our lives is over. Thank you for this, Jose, your work is always superb but this might be my favorite video yet

Golden Girls have a never ending fanbase. I was 3 years old in 1985 when the Golden Girls debuted. By the time the last two seasons were airing I was watching it with my Mom. I also watched the reruns at the time. I loved it even then! I still watch it regularly even now, all these years later. I've always loved the friends as family dynamic and the chemistry of the characters. The show made everyone want something like that. Even now, I feel that I don't want to get older unless it can be like Golden Girls! At 40 years old, I'm only about 15-20 years away from being the age of the characters. It gives me a template for what I want my older years to look like. It's amazing that a show from the 80's and early 90's can still be so relevant 30 something years later. But Golden Girls, like any timeless show deals with the human condition and grappling with a reality we all face; that's why people from different generations love it and why it never gets old. The human condition itself never changes much. The set dressings, costumes, and pop culture references are out of date, but the reality of growing older and having meaningful relationships will be part of life forever. This is what makes the show a favorite and a must watch for so many. Golden Girls is one of my favorite TV shows and one of the two shows I couldn't go without (the other being Star Trek the Next Generation). It brings comfort, laughter, hope, fun, and joy. I wish more tv shows were like it. But I suppose that's too much to ask for since Golden Girls is one of those once in a lifetime things. So it'll just be one of those timeless shows that we're still watching 50 or 60 years later. Maybe way off in the future people will come home in their flying cars to a house high in the sky and watch Golden Girls on their holographic tv. And it will be just as relevant even then. And just like we do now, they'll watch, enjoy and introduce it to their children, creating a never ending fan base.

People are people are people, honey…the world over and that will never truly change. If you read women’s magazines from the 1930’s, 1940’s, 1950’s and so on, you will find that although the wording changes, the problems and concerns are always there…try it. I have women’s magazines that date from October of 1897, the month and year that my paternal grandparents married, all of the way to magazines from the 1990’s…events change, problems change but somehow it all stays the same.
