Joseph Daniel Votto, JDV, Vottomatic, JoVo, Still Bangs, Tokki 2, Joey Moppo, Employee No. 19. The list goes on and on, but one thing is certain… the name Joey Votto will forever be etched in the history of this franchise.
One of Cincinnati's most beloved stars on the diamond and in the community. Thank you, Joey, for your 21 years with the Reds organization, 17 big league seasons and the everlasting impact you’ve made on Reds Country.

he signed a minor league deal and is a non roster invitee to training camp. he may not even make the team. he wasn’t very good at all in 2022 or 2023 when healthy if he ever was truly healthy at all. no guarantees he will make the team. I wish him all the best though.😊

My father and I always bonded over Reds baseball. I remember watching the Mothers' Day game with him when Joey went yard 3 times, one of which was a walk off grand slam. When he was losing his battle to dementia I would always show him the video of Joey hitting the walk off and he would cry every time. I like to think that deep down he remembered that moment. Thank you for everything you did for the game and the Reds franchise, Joey.. But more importantly thank you for being a genuinely gracious human being. You are a Reds legend. Keep banging in Toronto

This was strictly a baseball-business decision. No way in HELL were the Reds gonna pay 20 mill to a 40-year-old Joseph Daniel Votto. It saved the Reds 13 million(Reds paid a 7 million buyout to JDV, btw!), so that they could get players like Candelario, who's likely the 3rd baseman til Marte's suspension is over. Releasing JDV gave the Reds more flexibility, as his onerous contract essentially hamstrung the team from doing much of anything in free agency the last 4 or 5 years he was in Cincinnati. His contract was the main reason why he wasn't traded, as teams were reticent to give him the money specified in his contract, even though the majority of that money was deferred. His contract was as backloaded as Griffey Junior's was. Griffey Junior's getting about 3.5 million from the Reds per year now that he's retired, and JDV will get about 5 million per year from the Reds after he finally finishes his career. All that deferred money, in both Griffey Junior and JDV's contracts, is the reason why the Reds were able to afford to trade for Griffey Junior and give JDV that now-expired 10-year contract extension in 2012. Joey's presence, while it was great from a clubhouse and leadership perspective, was blocking the promotion of some of our promising youngsters in the minors to the majors with the Reds! Now that JDV's no longer here, more opportunities are available for the youngsters to be promoted to Cincinnati! Yes, it does ABSOLUTELY suck that JDV is no longer here, but it's ultimately gonna be good in the long run/term for the Reds! What I don't understand: why he wasn't formally named captain of the Reds, like Barry Larkin was about 20 years or so ago! There's your history lesson, in a nutshell!
