The reason that the flatiron is popular is because it is a cool shape for sure. AND at the end of the day most people are just carrying a knife to open boxes or cut random little stuff anyway, so why not carry one that looks fun. and for me personally i have never had any reasonably sized pocket knife bother me with weight, perhaps if i was completely loaded with gear it would be an issue but for regular EDc it is a complete non issue unless you are literally the weakest person ever and that extra ounce is really weighing you down haha
@erieschl
@erieschl 5 жыл бұрын
Pretty much man, the blade profile on the flat iron is like a chef knife or razor. I usually keep a knife in my lunch box, I'd take that flat iron over the Pilar any day. My coworker has a Pilar and I'd argue it's one of the most useless blade shapes I've played with, basically a glorified box opener.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. With that being said. I originally bought the flat iron on discount and when it first arrived I found myself enjoying it. The lockup is by far the most solid lockup out of all the knives I have owned to date. Ergonomics are very good, not the best but they hold their own. And my little knit pick about the video is simply why would you choose a cleaver style blade if you plan on piercing random things? The blade is easy to open in my opinion but yet again I grew up with traditional pocket knives and learned very quickly on how to open a knife one handed in a pinch. The flaws in my opinion mainly consist of the texture on the handle is too smooth on my model they do make one with a lot more texture on the handle with a diamond pattern. As well as the liner lock is very low profile and hard to push out of the way. When you first get the knife it takes time to learn how to close it safely. I carry this knife in my back pocket with my wallet and I hardly notice it is there.

I've got a CRKT with a Klecker lock. It's very odd using a flipper that takes 2 hands to close. Because the pivot is tuned for smooth action due to the flipper deployment, if you press the lock open there's a real risk of the blade swinging shut on your fingers, which I don't find happens with traditional lockbacks like a Buck 110 or even a Spyderco Delica or Endura, because the lock maintains some pressure on the blade rather than letting it swing free.

Enjoyed your video, but stop it about the Crossbones. A trailing point blade is awesome if you know how to use it. The longer, thinner blade on the Crossbones is very conducive to slicing, which is a trailing points design. Very handy in the kitchen and will even fillet small fish. You also get a light weight carry in ratio to blade length. Your clunker blade looked like a tire weight next to the Crossbones design. I do appreciate your opinion and directness we’re just at a disagreement here.
@BudgetBugout
@BudgetBugout 5 жыл бұрын
I like the design, just don't like it for the EDC tasks that I put it up against. It's totally fine to disagree, don't feel like you hafta stop the video because of it though. I'm not trying to convert you to a different religion. :)

@Kevan Elliott The blade shape of the Crossbones is excellent for cutting and slicing. I've found it to be an excellent EDC which looks great. The Clunker or Clicker or Clackety-Clack recommended is as ugly as being forced to watch Hillary Clinton debate videos. Okay, maybe not quite that bad, but it certainly isn't aesthetically pleasing by any means.

I agree with you on the Crossbones, great knife for eating with, and easy to sharpen. Knives with curvy blades are difficult to put an edge back on and unless you intend to toss them when dull are not very piratical. The Brad Zinker Urban Trapper is a favorite EDC blade for me, keeps me from having to use a Spork to cut food with. (Budget Bugout, THANKS FOR THE VIDEO : )
@random_eskimo_in_the_rockies
@random_eskimo_in_the_rockies 5 жыл бұрын
@barkingspider2007 I use a lot of different sharpening tools, so curved blades aren't a problem. My favorite is still tried and true Arkansas stones or Japanese Water Stones, but for recurves I use ceramic rods, Spyderco's Tri-Angle Sharpmaker, and the regular model Worksharp (I am thinking about getting the Ken Onion model, but haven't yet.) By the way, I agree Budget Bugout made a great video, even the parts with which I disagreed.

The Gerber Paraframe was the first knife that I caried on a regular basis, and I LOVED it for the 5 years that I carried it. The blade is a little exposed, but it never gave me any problems. I wouldn't say it's overrated, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a budget all metal knive. However, I would still recommend a CRKT Driftor or even better, a Rat 1 instead.

*Thanks for the video. I appreciate your honesty regarding the Para3. I personally love the Para3, but I do understand your point, which it sounds like you're saying that it's not a necessity. Especially since you can now get the compression lock in a few different models. The way I understand it's reason for existence is to comply with certain state laws, but also to address the blade to handle ratio issue with the PM2. I might be way off on that, but it's just my take. Thanks again.*

I don't understand why people think framelocks are any more strong than liner locks : the cut out for tension relief is the weak spot and it's generally thinner than many liners . 9:17 never recommend a knife with a recurve blade. They simply can NOT be sharpened if you don't own sharpening devices using rods or corners (liek the spyderco sharpmaker). Terrible choice for an average person who only own some sort of cheap flat stone or a non average person who owns multi hundred premium flat stones :) . Recurves are cool looking but...they are just bad, not worth the constraint. 11:15 oh sooo... let me get this straight my dude... you criticize the Crossbone because of the shape of its blade (honestly, it doesn't really feel like you yourself know why you don't like this knife actually but whatever) and then jump on the occasion to recommend yet another recurve blade? lol Recurves being terrible blade patterns sacrificing WAAAY much to looks over functions (again: can't be sharpened with normal sharpening tools and offer no provable advantages in terms of cutting stuff) It seems, to me, that your opinions are not based on very objective criteria but rather on... a vague something.

@@caydvermaat6439 that's the most stupid rhetoric that people like to throw around. Some opinions are based on facts, some are based on... weird nonsensical personal bullshit. Not all opinions are worth the same: that's bs we tell to dummies so they don't feel bad about themselves. The fact that recurves are a least practical type of blade shape is NOT an opinion, it's a provable/obvious fact.

TheOneAndOnlySame it’s all up to personal opinion, someone may find it the most useful blade shape, just depends on what you like and or have a need for. Just my $0.02. It’s not necessarily fact that it’s the least practical. Just depends on how and what you use it for.

1.) The strength of the lock is not if it breaks but how easy it moves or unlocks under force to the blade, hence the spine whack test. Frame locks are better locks. 2.) You absolutely can sharpen a recurve on a traditional stone. You just sharpen on the corner of the stone, it takes some practice but it works.

I love my Gerber paraframe. I love how the blade rolls, how the inner lining of pockets get stuck in the frame. How I've nearly cut myself when I shove it into my pocket when I open it. But overall it's been a decent knife. It's just I'd never waste the money on it again. I've had the pleasure of abusing the heck out of it to see if I can break it. So far I haven't.

I actually loved my flat iron because I’d use it for a lot of things that need more chopping and the weight helped with that a lot and I could still choke up on it surprisingly well and still be able to do finer work or any other things I needed. That being said I recently lost it on a backpacking trip and next go around instead of that one I’m thinking of buying the spyderco roc which is their cleaver style blade.

Isaac Ammerman It is always on everyone’s “Top 10” list... a designer from Kershaw once asked me at SHOT Show why that knife is as popular as it is. I was surprised by the question but I answered it because of how much Blade it fits into such a small design. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Love the concept of this video! Seen many videos of people talking about overrated knives, but I like the direct comparisons to the "better buys" that you did, which is unique. I agree with most of this list. I do very much like the Crossbones as a gentleman's knife and am willing to sacrifice a little bit on the steel due to the scope of use and excellent looks (main purpose of a gentleman's knife, lol). I definitely love the looks of the Home front, but if I slightly hesitate on the AUS 8 for the Crossbones, I can't bring myself to spring for the AUS 8 on a blade $20+ more expensive no matter how good it looks. If they came out with a 154CM or D2 version for the same $70 price, I would get it no questions. I want the Flat Iron simply to have a budget-friendly folding cleaver in the collection, not because I think it is practical. It looks cool and I don't mind the weight if I decide to carry it at times. I am definitely looking forward to the XL version of the Pilar though! Cool video as always!!
