Weird Leo Sayer story. Back in 1983 I was making my first trip to the US with a mate, driving from Denver to San Diego. We landed in Reno one night and the Casino we stayed at had Leo as the Star Act in their dinner theater (I miss those). Because he was not a big hit in the US we somehow got seated in a booth right under the stage, about 6 feet from Leo’s piano. We got a personal performance of all of his hits and a lot more, amazing bit of serendipity ✌️

This song was written by Ray Parker Jr. He's mainly known today for the "Ghostbusters" theme song, but he was a much used session musician in the 1970s. Then he started his own band Raydio. Y'all should check out Leo's twin brother Richard Simmons, lol. (Just kidding, they're not related 🤣)

I was working at the Manor Hotel in Yeovil, Somerset in 1974 when Leo Sayer and his band played at the new concert hall in the town. After the soundcheck he and some of the crew came into the hotel bar for refreshment. In the main our customers were local businessmen and retired workers from the tannery in the town. He sat and talked to the old guys about their lives and then bought them all a drink. Lovely man.

Glad you enjoyed Leo Sayer....I hope you give "When I Need You" a try....a falsetto ballad. If you were to ask Leo or Barry who their rock & roll falsetto champion is, they likely would say Frankie Valli, lead singer of the Four Seasons. You have not visited them awhile and should give "Sherry" a try. It was their first #1 in the very early 60s and features Frankie hitting some impressive high notes!

YAY! Someone finally reacting to Leo Sayer. THANK YOU! Hopefully you guys have started a trend because I don't see many KZfaqrs checking out his music, which is a damn shame. When I was a kid, I would see Leo on different TV variety shows of the 70's & early 80's. My first reaction when I saw him perform was 'Ok, who is this little guy?" He is a tiny fellow, about 5 foot 4 inches but OMG, he can SING! My favorites - When I need you & More than I can say. Please check those out soon - live performances are better, as he is very animated. I think Amber will really like "When I need you" - it is a beautiful love song, which is sung in his lower vocal range.

I am old enough to remember Leo's first appearance on Top of the Pops (the UK BBC's weekly hit parade TV show). He started out dressed as a clown with his face covered in clown mske-up. This was because he thought he was ugly. He had a square jaw, big mouth and naturally curly hair which gave him a white man affro, for want of a better description. But everyone loved him, and after a few hits, he finally revealed his true self, and we all loved him for it. He was wonderful.

Saw him live in 1975 at The Troubadour in Hollywood. Standing Room Only that night. Standing about 3 feet to my right was George Harrison. After the show when we went out to the parking lot to fetch our car, the attendant had left for the night and we found the key on his pegboard, but no sign of the car. A very drunk Joe Cocker stumbled out of the club and helped us locate our car. Meanwhile, Leo Sayer put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen (and I've seen tons of 'em). Jay and Amber, you should listen to his first hit, "Long Tall Glasses (I Can't Dance)" and his phenomenal ballad called "When I Need You." I never quite figured out why he had the one big debut album and then pretty much just fell off the radar. Very talented guy. I know he's still around, living in New South Wales, but I never heard another peep out of him after this one album.

“More Than I Can Say” has to be the next Leo Sayer! Also “When I Need You” is on the soft side but another very popular if not his most popular Leo Sayer song.

I've seen Leo Sayer in concert three times. The first was when I was seventeen. I remember him going off stage at one point and he must have done a run up, as next thing he literally flew, sideways, quite high, right across to the far side of the stage, landed on his feet and carried on singing. Blew my mind! He was just as good, although no flying, at the other two performances, but he, and I, were a few decades older by then.

Small town Arkansas the year this was released. We (the band) had to play this at Pep Rally. The cheerleaders had a routine they performed seated while wearing hats and white gloves. Oh. The memories 😂

Leo was my first live concert.....Sheffield City Hall in 1974! I started a lifelong love affair with live gigs. All of the tracks mentioned by my fellow Robsquaders show Leo's versatility and talent. My personal favourite is a more mellow album track called 'I Will Not Stop Fighting For You'

Another classic falsetto is Frankie Valli. With the Four Seasons his falsetto is prominent in “Sherry”, “Rag Doll”, “Big Girls Don’t Cry”.

I was smiling and dancing listening to this stellar tune. Brings back memories but I was too young to go out dancing at the time it was released….what a great era that would have been. Someone develop a Time Machine pleeeaaassse. I also love some slower songs by this English born, now Australian citizen and they include When I need love and More than I can say.

My favorite Leo Sayer album is his 1973 debut album "Silverbird". Early in his career, Sayer performed in a pierrot costume. You should check out his early performances in full makeup such as "The Show Must Go On" or "Innocent Bystander".

Yay, it's great to see Leo come up! May I suggest 'Orchard Road' as another great song sung by Leo. Great story telling lyrics. The words and melody are lovely - really paints a picture.

Killer hit song which truly represents the sounds of the 70's. Sayer was a fun cat with tons of energy and an impressive voice and stage presence. He sang several of his hits with the Muppets! My favorite of his, though, is his live version of The Show Must Go On in which he dressed up as the sad clown from the song; a song which was also huge hit for Three Dog Night. The sadness of the lyrics permeates his voice. A fantastic must see, IMO...

I never heard this extended version before, I love it! Jay & Amber, I need to repeat what surlechapeau said, "When I need you" and "Long Tall Glasses". When I need you, is a slow ballet, I think that is the best way to describe it, and Long Tall Glasses is a quick fun song.

In an interview with PopMatters, Leo Sayer said, “I remember being in clubs and seeing so many people dancing together. For me, as an entertainer, my whole focus is about making people feel good. When you see people smiling and dancing, there’s no greater reward.”

Welcome to the 1970's!!! This song takes me back to my first duty station in the NAVY. We had a young guy who worked on the base (we had students that would get summer jobs there). He did this song in his high school senior talent show. He would walk around the base singing it and my roommate and I both got a big kick out of it. I am always happy when I am watching you two!! I love when young people discover our music!! It lives on through you !!

Leo Sayer is one of the most underrated singers. Many of his songs got famous due to other artists. His "I can't stop loving you" was covered by Phil Collins and Taylor Swift. His "When I need You" was sung by Celine Dion.

My favourite song by Leo, and i think because of the falsetto ... I thought there were two singers apart from the back up singers... I had to see a video live to realise it was all him. He has other great songs but you won't hear the falsetto there : More than i can say and when i need, you are great.

Bob Fish, one of FOUR lead singers in the 70's Doo-Wop revival band, 'Darts', (or The Darts) had one of the best falsettos in music, & blended with the other three vocalists in the band, they made the sweetest sounds I ever heard! My favourite among their many great songs is, 'This is the night for love', & it shows off Bob's beautiful voice brilliantly! I swear, Darts is one of the reasons we have ears!! 🤣
