that last part of an epee match when it just turns into WW3
@IGNEUS1607 Жыл бұрын
A lot of people are talking about how fencing has devolved as a sport into just tag. I think this has more to do with the scoring system than anything else, as the timer and trying to score as much in the allotted time really incentives this tactic. Instead, I think kendo has a better system where a match is best 2 out of 3 points, and so defence and counterattacking is better incentivised as if you lose a point, your opponent will only be one point from winning whether there’s ten seconds or ten minutes left on the clock.
@javietdiazfetnandez8848 Жыл бұрын
I agree with you, as an HEMA fencer, atleast where I practice it (Spain), matches are set up for 3 points, where, for example, a cut or stab in the head or your body are considered a fatal blow, so you wouldn't be able to keep fighting (you'd eventually die) and lose the battle (3 points for the head and body), stabs or cuts at the arms are 1 point and that applies for the legs as well, so I think that differences between sport fencing and historical fencing are those words, sport fencing (epee or sabre, etc) is literally a sport that doesn't really try to recreate what would've been duels years ago, and historical fencing is a sport too, but actually trying to recreate the past, so psychological pressure in a duel of HEMA is pretty interesting since a cut or stab in the head means your end (you lose), so you can imagine how people felt when they were literally fencing for their lives hundreds years ago.
@WaybackFencingClub Жыл бұрын
As a both sport and historical Id say "real" duels are slower and a little slower/chubby for the layman to watch and the sport is a little more high octane but confusing for the layman to watch. All pref.

I think someday when the technology reaches a point, participants will have health bars and the equipment will be able to detect proper edge alignment and the amount of force with each strike. Placement of strikes could also play a roll, awarding damage multipliers for different body parts. You could keep the current point system, but to get a point you must reduce the opponent's HP to zero. Ideally, bullseye thrusts to the heart or forehead would deal enough damage to win a point in a single hit. Similarly, strong cuts with proper edge alignment to vital areas could also deal enough damage to win a point.

i like epee but it always kills me seeing how people don't treat it like a true swordfight, instead it's just trying to get points and using the rules to your advantage, allowing them to sprint full bore into someones sword which is not something any actual (living) swordfighter would do
@Brother_K2 жыл бұрын
It’s a sport, they aren’t trying to simulate an actual sword fight. It’s based on sword fighting but it’s in no way supposed to be one. That’s like saying “It always kills me seeing how track runners don’t act like their being chased by lions.”
@ledrid69562 жыл бұрын
@@Brother_K it very much obviously was originally made to simulate actual sword fighting and this is just what it evolved into over time and even still is meant to somewhat emulate sword fighting you know, considering they are actually using fucking swords? As apposed to your pointless analogy in no point do track runners be chased by anything, where as this entire sport IS sword fighting, like me saying i like water then you saying "then you like oil too" like im sorry but if you think this sport isn't attempting to actually emulate sword fighting, where the entire goal is to touch your opponent without being touched, like actual swordfighters do, then i don't know what to tell you. Maybe just look up the history of basketball and learn how players will adapt to the rules and bend them in their advantage to win and how rules change to accommodate to this changing the sport entirely over decades, it happens in basically every sport, i thought it was common knowledge but i guess not.
@Brother_K2 жыл бұрын
@@ledrid6956 Your first point is like saying “Humans are basically just apes because they evolved from them”. I was not saying that track runners were being chased by anything, rather it’s a sport about running but they weren’t running for the natural reason (Running has been around for far longer than sport). My analogy had nothing to do with your analogy, l I fail to see your reasoning there. I said it was based on sword fighting, like track they are doing the actions but it’s not supposed to be like running from a lion, you can be based on something while still not emulating it. Your last point is unrelated to anything I said, and “I thought it was common knowledge but I guess not” doesn’t really benefit what you’re saying and just makes you seem like a dick.
@ledrid69562 жыл бұрын
@@Brother_K it's kind of funny how the first thing you mention is how things change over time while ending it with saying that things changing over time is completely unrelated, you legit did a 180.
